Retinol is good for acne scarring as it stimulates collagen production. Go low and go slow, using it a couple of times a week at a low dosage, building up to using four nights by sixth week. When you finish that product, go up a strength, but introduce gradually as before. I like Medik8 Crystal Retinal. Suggest starting at strength 3. I also like Geek and Gorgeous A Game - start with 5. Apply after cleansing in the evening and apply a moisturiser on top. Steer clear of eyes. Wash off in the morning and always use an SPF in the morning, minimum 30 as the retinol makes skin more photo sensitive. Plus it's a great habit to get into as sunscreen is the best anti ageing cream you çan buy. I'd also look at a course of micro needling, which will improve the appearance of acne scarring and work beautifully in conjunction with retinol use.
Be patient though, it can take weeks, months and even a year for collagen to remodel.

I agree that if you have deep scarring and pitting retinol is probably the best thing, but to be used with appropriate medical advice.

For an off the shelf treatment to fade the red marks left by cystic acne, the nip+fab glycolic pads work well, but use them with an appropriate sunscreen treatment otherwise you will end up with sun damage.
