What coat to wear with maxi dresses?

I have a few maxi dresses (similar shown in pics) that almost reach the floor on me. My problem is I don't know what coats I should wear with these. Despite me having a lot of coats (nothing really neutral though) they're all winter coats. Going into spring / summer I don't have much other than casual coats at the moment. Things like shackets etc. Everything I have is shorter as well. Hip length or above. Can anyone recommend a style of coat that I could wear with these? I'm 5'4, so also don't want to look swamped

I think you need something short. Denim jacket (a bit ubiquitous now, I know) or leather jacket?

Cropped denim jacket or leather jacket.
A coat with a maxi dress wouldnt look right

I wear this navy jacket with mine, especially good over denim maxi dresses and with jeans, if you don't want to do double denim! It's got ponte sides for a really good fit

I usually wear either a denim jacket/leather biker or a chunky cropped cardi over my maxi dresses.

Thanks everyone. A cropped jacked was initially what I had in mind, but most of mine are too casual. The fabric on my favourite dress is a thicker jersey fabric so won't be very comfy under a demon jacket as all of mine are tighter fitting and I wear them with the sleeves folded up. I think I have something suitable however. Just need to find it!

Instead of a jacket you could try a cropped boxy jumper over the dress.

Leather jackets give an edgy modern look. If a little chilly, you can always wear a scarf.

Denim jackets look a little casual.

I would not wear a cardigan.

I am unsure about a blazer. It would need to be cropped otherwise it would drown the dress.

Thanks everyone. Yes I agree about a cardigan. I don't own a leather jacket - just not been a huge fan of them on me. I will try some with my boyfriend blazers. I think I've got one that would work

I like a cardi with a dress but not in a dull, drab sense. It has to be a nice one, that really works with the dress.
I don't like 'edgy' though, and prefer a sort of relaxed, rural, slightly indie look with boots (mad combination but i am a mad ferret!).

For summer I have a few dresses with or without sleeves then i can choose via the weather which to opt for and wont need a cardi or jacket at all.

In winter i wear shorter dresses with tights and a long wool coat. I probably look like a depressed poet but im happy enough Grin

I love the blue dress above, but for me it needs to exhibit itself and any type of jacket or coat would ruin it i think. Some dresses need to be alone....like greta garbo!

the first dress I would wear also wear with a duster.

The third one a short quilted boho folk jacket would work or a shorter blazer style jacket which would also work with the first.

2nd denim jacket.

I have more than 10 black blazers/jackets but you need different lengths, fits, materials to work with the rest of your wardrobe.

2 & 3 might work with a chunky cardi

Rightly or wrongly, I'd wear an oversized camel coat with all of them.
