The hair that grows at the top, back, right of my skull (the right parietal), is ALWAYS knotty/tatty!

Is there some kind of scientific reason for this?

The rest of my hair isn't like this!

Probably where you rest your head when your sleeping

If you’re like my dd who has the same it’ll probably be how you sleep

Mine's like that. I've started wearing a silky turban thing at suggestion of hairdresser. I think it helps.

How you rest your head when sleeping?
Do you have a double crown, low lying or off centre crown?
Do you have a different hair type there, i.e. more curly or coarse?

I have curly hair only at the nape of my neck, the rest is straight, always have. DD's is much curlier at her forehead. Probably a type 3b or c, the rest is about a type 2c. It's definitely possible to have multiple hair types on the same head.

I'm not sure - how can I find out my crown type?

I do sleep on my side, so that explanation does make sense.
