Amazing dry hand discovery

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 22/03/2022 22:50

I have horribly dry skin on my hands - particularly finger tips which crack and bleed, and have tried so many products over the years with little real success.

Was watching The Witchfinder on IPlayer (unlikely source of beauty tips) and a character said her soft hands were because she rubs a knob of butter into them twice a day. I think it was meant as a joke - the internet yielded little/no results.

Decided heck, I'll try anything at this point and 3 days in it is honestly the best results I have ever had. And it doesn't even make my hands greasy. Rub it in and then rinse hands if I need to do something, or not if I don't. They are fine to use after 5 mins or so with no rinsing.

My skin is so much smoother, even the worst bits on my finger tips. Wanted to share in case it helps anyone else.

Is it April 1st already?

Infinitemoon · 22/03/2022 22:53

I am going to try now as mine are really sore - I hope this isn't a hoax! Grin

Lambanddog · 22/03/2022 22:54

Eww. Wouldn't that be unhygienic and honk in hot weather?

I just use baby oil in the shower Grin reckon my dog would love it if I started coating my hands in butter!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 22/03/2022 22:55

I use coconut oil all over and I love it. I'll keep my butter for cooking lol

Qwill · 22/03/2022 22:57

Kiehl’s intensive. Not found anything better. Buy it when it’s 20% off and stock up.

Infinitemoon · 22/03/2022 23:01

My skin hurts and it now stinks!Confused

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 22/03/2022 23:15

Well I am serious and it appears to be working for me but fine if others don't get in with it Grin

I'm so sorry but that made me laugh. I had a wacky Dermatologist once that told me to try butter on my dry lips.

RoyKentsChestHair · 22/03/2022 23:53

I so sometimes use butter as lip balm if my lips are extra dry! Coconut oil is also great, and I have been known to rub a bit of sunflower oil into my hands while cooking too, so don’t see why butter wouldn’t work. But yeah, that smell - I always said little kids smell like butter to me, probably because they eat with their hands Grin

Chishnfips · 23/03/2022 04:49

Did you misheard them say cocoa butter or shea butter?

countrygirl99 · 23/03/2022 05:14

Udder cream - tip from a dairy farmer. I use equimins as it has tea tree and smells nice. About £15 for a huge pot that lasts over a year.

No - it's set in 17th century rural England. Anyhow - obviously it's not for everyone. My hands don't smell but then I am washing them 70 million times a day since covid (they were dry before - that's not the reason), so they mainly smell of soap.

I use Cetreben which works for me but is quite expensive. I will give butter a try and udder cream

PAFMO · 23/03/2022 06:41

Obviously. Butter is fat. Like olive oil is fat.
It will work.
Neutrogena 24 hour intense hand cream costs £3.99 and contains 300 applications in a small tube. It's cheaper than either butter or oil.

Theblacksheepandme · 23/03/2022 07:00

It might be good on my dry, peri menopausal vagina. I'm just picturing my husbands face when he would walk into the bedroom and see me slathering a 1lb of butter on my vag Grin

Sure - but it doesn't work for me. Honestly - I've tried pretty much everything. I only use a very small amount of butter each time. Olive oil doesn't work for me. It's not just the fat - I assume it must be the proteins or something in the butter that work for me personally.

I've learnt from this thread that I will not share this tip irl since everyone here clearly things I'm a nutter. Ah well GrinBlushGrin

Could I try that attached to some toast ?
Innocenta · 23/03/2022 18:01

@BewareTheBeardedDragon Personally I think it was nice of you to share it, even though I'm vegan so won't be trying it myself. Everyone's skin, body, etc, has its own quirks and issues. I bet you're right that the particular makeup of chemicals that = butter just works really well for you in a way that other fats don't.

Always good to share tips because it can take a lot of experimenting to find what works for you individually. I "ought" to love coconut oil, but my skin hates it. Grin

Pythonesque · 23/03/2022 18:06

I remember, years ago and I forget the context, someone pointing out that there is a certain sense in moisturising animal skin with animal grease. Hence lanolin etc.

But of course, not everyone tolerates the same things so it needs to be trial and error. Glad you have found something that works for you!

Pugsbladder · 23/03/2022 18:06

Mix parts sugar & oil (olive or vegetable)until you have a scrub mixture & rub over hands. Relax fifteen minutes or more (towel on lap) then rinse off. Hands will be baby soft. We used to do this for hairdressers exma (so) when washing clients hair made your hands sore.

meloncolic · 23/03/2022 18:07

I hear you OP. Lanolin - another animal fat - is the only thing that works for me.

Pugsbladder · 23/03/2022 18:07

That should be "sp" as forgot how to spell it.
