After work drinks with city types

It's a retirement do for a boss I worked for years ago. There'll be loads of people I haven't seen for years, but people I liked back then and am looking forward to seeing.

It's in the City. Some will be coming from work, some won't. Some are still in that industry, some aren't. When I worked with them I was always very sharply dressed in expensive suits and heels. I don't live that life anymore, but I don't think many people do?

So what on earth am I going to wear?

I'm 51, will have aged significantly since I last saw them, but in pretty good shape, tall and slim. Blonde with summer colouring.

These days I like clothes that are fun and comfortable. Definitely no uncomfortable shoes.

I'd spend up to £200 for something I can get plenty of wear from. My usual social life is pub lunches and dancing to local bands.

I'm thinking ahead. It's in May so could be warm but might not be.

The City has gone more casual in recent years so you don’t want to look overdressed. How would the attached suit you given you say you’re tall and slim?

Yes thats the sort of thing I like.

I have an aqua coloured leather biker jacket that can lift a dress whilst simulateously dressing it down, but I'm struggling to find straight dresses currently. Everything seems flouncy. There's definitely a place for flouncy Grin but I'm not sure this is it.

Also trainers? I still live in a world where they can occasionally restrict venues you get access too - otherwise I'd never wear anything else..

I was out in the City on Friday night. T-shirts/shirts/jeans and trainers everywhere.

I wore coated jeans, biker boots, t-shirt and a leather jacket. Comfy and got lots of people asking where I got bits from.

I work in the City (and have done for many years). You're overthinking it. No-one cares what you're wearing. Seriously. Wear whatever you want.

(Although I must admit I hate the outfit from doesmybumlookbig - it looks like she's trying too hard and getting it wrong).

Yes is why I struggle. I liked it when there were rules Grin "Anything" is far too hard. I'm struggling with clothes around atm tbh.

Seriously @DetailMouse just wear what makes you happy. I've been out in full overdressed client-facing outfit glory and out in sweaty gym kit still red in the face and sweating from the gym . No-one cares anymore unless you're going for a job interview.

Have a look at Trinny Woodall on Instagram for inspiration - similar age/height/figure and colouring.

I love the sound of your jacket. I would look at Ganni, Rixo etc for a dress to go with it.

An outfit like this but using your leather jacket - which sounds great - rather than the jacket here? A lot of people I know who work in the CIty buy their work clothes from Me & Em

Do you need or want to spend loads on a dress to go with your jacket?

Gonnagetgoing · 23/03/2022 19:09

OP I’m now looking at aqua leather jackets - whack it into google!

So my questions are is a more expensive ins better?

I’ve got an old Nicole Farhi end old Dolce and Gabbana leather jacket but the quality of newer ones is so good too now. Can’t decide.
