Black tie dress - I need help

Looked in all the usual places. Can not see anything at all. Starting to panic as event is in 5 weeks time.

I think I'd like knee length - am 5f4 size 14, planning to low carb so might manage a 12. Prefer darker colours, was wondering about maybe navy rather than black. Need sleeves or something to cover tops of arms.

Budget up to £400 for dress.

If it's military then double check length standards.
I made a gaff at my first military "do" and wore a mid length dress. The person who invited me was reminded of "standards" but I was blithely unaware! Next invite he told me what I should be wearing! It's so easy for men; my husband just wore black tie and an evening suit!

PomRuns · 18/03/2022 12:37

Good advice - not military but DH is being annoyingly vague. I do know someone else is going knee length.

Black tie doesn't have to be black - can be bright red if you so fancy, so don't restrict yourself to black/navy. But I would interpret black tie to be floor length.

What's your favourite part of your body - what would you like to emphasise, and what would you like to hide? What's your style? Glam, classic, understated?

PomRuns · 18/03/2022 12:58

Black/Navy as I suit dark colours.

Classic, bit glam ! Need to hide tops of arms.

I would interpret "Black tie" as floor length dresses for women. Chi Chi London have some lovely dresses at reasonable prices. Sizing is on the small side though.

Black tie can be a cocktail style dress

notawittyname1954 · 18/03/2022 13:45

Yes I agree with others if military probably different dress code applies

I keep seeing Bombshell HQ reccommended on here, and i would LOVE one of these - definitely in the 'glam' category!

I'm going to a black tie do too so following with interest. Am also a size 14. I'll be going floor length rather than mid length, there are so few occasions to dress up properly

gogohm · 18/03/2022 19:02

I've just ordered from ever-pretty they have various lengths, I have ordered a size up

gogohm · 18/03/2022 19:07

It's long but I liked the fact that they have plus sized models!

I get mine on ebay. Generally.people buy one for a special occasion then sell it. Had some cracking bargains

GettingStuffed · 18/03/2022 20:56

I was supposed to delete that one this one ( although the previous one really only needs a little work )

PomRuns · 21/03/2022 12:12

Thank you so much for all the suggestions.

I think I need short sleeves - I’m quite small and look swamped in full sleeves - like a child dressing up despite being late 40s!
