Are Ray Bans worth the money?

I wear sunglasses throughout the year as my eyes are quite sensitive to light. I have several pairs of cheap sunglasses (next, boots, new look etc etc) that are dotted in handbags and the car.
I am coveting some Ray Bans (Jackie Ohh style). It would
Be quite a big purchase for me but I think i need/deserve a treat- so do you think they are worth the money or should
I stick with my cheapies?

I think so. Ive got some Jackie O style ones and some aviators so two totally different looks and they are lovely quality.

sm40 · 17/03/2022 23:31

Oh yes! If you can afford polarised ones go for them.

N0tfinished · 18/03/2022 00:18

I think so. I've bought about 3 pairs over the years. They're generally classic so don't date and I like the quality.

goodjoujou · 18/03/2022 07:08

In a word yes! The quality is amazing and they are classics

LifeIsBusy · 18/03/2022 07:09

Definitely if you want to be able to see when the sun is out 😎😎

PartyPlan · 18/03/2022 07:10

Yes, I had mine about 8 years before they finally gave up the ghost and a leg fell off. They were only about £100 but given how much I wore them they were well worth it.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 18/03/2022 07:11

I wear Ray Ban frames on prescription glasses and they are the most comfortable glasses I have ever owned.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 18/03/2022 08:00

There are LOADS on Vinted for £40ish...

Notarealmum · 18/03/2022 08:38

It’s definitely worth buying better quality, if only to protect your eyes. And Ray bans are perennially stylish, I think, whatever design you go for. (Having said that, I often wear really cheap ones because I’m always losing mine 🙄)

AuntieMarys · 18/03/2022 08:43

Yes! I have 3 pairs of prescription ones.

Alocasia · 18/03/2022 08:49

All sunglasses legally sold in the UK will have UV protection so in that respect your cheap ones will be fine. RayBan are decent quality for a fashion brand but not amazing. The styles don’t tend to date though as many of them are very classic.

AdriannaP · 18/03/2022 08:53

Yes! Had mine for 11 years and getting a new pair this year. I get headaches from cheap sunglasses and definitely worth it for me.

AdriannaP · 18/03/2022 08:55

I bought mine on TK Maxx for £75 but not Jackie Oh sadly. I had those and loved them.

DillDanding · 18/03/2022 08:56

Definitely. I wouldn’t buy ‘fashion’ sunglasses as I’d worry they weren’t giving me enough protection.

I lost my beloved ray-bans not long ago. I waited a few (tortuous) weeks so I could replace them at the airport duty free.

MaizeAmaze · 18/03/2022 09:05

Yes. I used to buy sunglasses from Boots etc. Then I broke a pair, and switched DH's raybans that he rarely wore since stopping wearing contact lenses. Oh my. The difference. I would definitely replace them with a premium brand if something happened to them. They became mine about 5 years ago. No sunglasses have lasted more than about 18 months before, and these must be about 10 years old now.

EmmaStone · 18/03/2022 09:13

Yes! They're so much more comfortable to wear for long periods than fashion sunglasses. And I take mine to my opticians if they need any repairs doing, they're quite happy to get an arm back on or refit for me, even though purchased elsewhere (although I spend quite a bit there on my normal glasses...).

I've got 3 pairs of Raybans - Wayfarers with a red frame, Aviators in silver, and some black hunky ones, can't remember the style name, not quite as big as Jackie Ohhhs.

nearlyspringyay · 18/03/2022 09:26

Absolutely. I've tried a few styles but always end up back with the Wayfarers

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 18/03/2022 09:39

I always wanted some and never got then as I am so careless with sunnies. And I was in the trade too....Dispensing Optician!

I would always recommend polarising lenses over any other option. I have a pair of prescription, plain tinted sunspecs and it's just no contest compared to my super cheap Aldi polarising lenses that are so much better.

I am off to look at raybans again though, I have not lost a pair of sunspecs for years now!

HiGunny · 18/03/2022 09:45

Definitely. I have a pair of black Wayfarers that I bought 8 years ago and are still going strong. Very comfortable to wear and still look like new. I only bought cheaper brands prior to them and they never lasted more than a year or two.

I also find I'm much more careful with my Ray-Bans as they cost so much, so don't leave them lying around etc.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/03/2022 10:05

I find them quite boring in style (have had designer and cheap sunglasses) but if you like them go for it.

thisplaceisweird · 18/03/2022 10:10

Yes but only if you spend a little extra and go for polarised

OldTinHat · 18/03/2022 10:12

I've had aviators since I was 17 and still wear the very same pair now and I'm 50! That's how good they are and I have bought many other brands over the years but you can't beat Ray Bans imo.

Summersdreaming · 18/03/2022 10:15

I love my prescription Ray Bans for driving in, and I've got 2 non prescription pairs too. I'm not a big spender on brands so that says a lot for me.

ChickenStripper · 18/03/2022 10:19

I find that if you have an expensive pair or two or three 😂 then you really look after them - you don't just chuck them in your handbag eg. It also stops you doing all this "oh they are only 29 pounds" crap in places like TK Maxx and buying a pair you wear once.

Lovewineandchocolate · 18/03/2022 10:21

I love mine. I have a few pairs kept in different cars. Would also advise polarised. Also be careful about buying second hand (ebay etc) there are so many fakes about.
