Have H&M recently changed their sizes?

Suddenly everything that fits me is S, when I have been a solid M for years. (This is taking into account the oversized trend!) I am the same size I've always been.

Why?!

Hmmm I think H&M sizing has always been a bit hit and miss. The past few years, I've had to size down in the odd thing though, when previously I would have sized up in everything!

That said, I sized up in some denim shorts last year and they were still tiny!

I don't trust their sizing at all, but they have a good number of reviews on their site, which helps. I used reviews to buy a few bits their recently and they're all perfect.

But vanity sizing is a mumsnet pet topic, so you may get a lot of people frothing about that Wink. "WHEN I WERE A LASS YOU SIZE 8S WOULD HAVE ALL BEEN 24S, YOU BIG FATTIES", or words to that effect

Interesting as H&M have always done the polar opposite of vanity sizing. I'm a 10 in Next, a 16 in M&S and need a crane to get me out of the house and should really only wear a tarpaulin in Zara and H&M.

Blossomtoes · 17/03/2022 14:23

H&M sizes have always been tiny. It’s a good thing if they’ve become more realistic.

Snozwanger · 17/03/2022 14:37

H&M changed their sizing in 2018 to bring it in line with European sizing, so where you used to have to size up one size you no longer have to. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/fashion/2018/jun/05/h-and-m-change-uk-womenswear-sizes-customer-frustration

BeaLola · 17/03/2022 15:54

I find them a bit hit and miss but overall recently I have had to size down - I have been buying the odd shirt & dress and on a couple of the shirts I went down 2 sizes but a cashmere blend wrap cardigan I bought in my usual size and it was perfect

I tend to do a quick squiz of reviews before I choose what size to buy

H&M have terrible sizing.

I still have a air of dark sand chinos in my wardrobe in a size 20 that went now where near me when I was a 20 and still won't go over my arse now I am a 12.

I am totally confused by sizes these days. I am a size 12 and an S in some Uniqlo shirts. I used to be M. Everything is oversized.

NurseSeacole · 17/03/2022 16:15

So it's not just me then!
Im size 18 in M&S but couldn't get a pair of H&M size 18 jeans over my hips yesterday and I tried several different styles. Yet a H&M jacket in a size large swamped me.

The kids' sizing seems to be OK though.

TheLadyGrayson · 17/03/2022 16:24

I also find H&M jackets, jumpers, dresses and tops can be massive, but trousers or skirts can still be on the smaller side. It’s just impossible to know, item to item.. but I guess you could say that for any shop! I dread clothes shopping for that reason.

ferretface · 17/03/2022 16:36

Because of the total inconsistency in clothing sizes I gave up referring to size labels on clothing and just buy whatever seems to fit right now ignoring what the label says. As a consequence I have sizes 8 through 14 and S through L in my wardrobe...it is annoying when you're buying online though, you don't always want to buy 3 different sizes and return the non fitting ones in order to find the one that fits.

Picklerickflag · 17/03/2022 16:40

H&M has hardly ever being the barometer of accurate sizing though, has it? It's just a bit more upmarket primark isn't it?

DuckyNoMates · 17/03/2022 17:09

Its so tricky to tell when everything is oversized or cropped!

Am I reading this right that a size 20 from a few years ago is smaller than a current size 12? If so that size 20 was definitely mislabelled. Vanity sizing is a thing but a current size 12 was never a 20! Certainly not in H&Ms lifetime.
BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 17/03/2022 19:56

The size 20 being too small for a size 12 isn't a vanity sizing thing, it's a product of H&M's notoriously inconsistent approach to sizes.

I fell in love with a pair of linen trousers from H&M a while ago and just took every single pair from two different sizes off the rack and tried them all on until I found the one which happened to fit me.

Oh, and this is an M coat from Mango...

Clearly I bought it for the oversized look, but you could fit two of me in here!

I was going to buy some jeans from there last weekend , I am normally 16/18 , size 20 wouldn't even get half way up my legs !

Yet a medium hood fits fine .Confused

VerityPJohnson · 17/03/2022 23:20

Everything seems massive to me. I had to buy a 6 in a jacket recently. I am NOT a size 6. It was the only one left on the sale rack as obviously it was labelled a 6.

I’d rather they spent less on the fabric and more on the cut/finish.

I generally find H&M quite true to size but the shops are all over the place at the moment. Assume everything is just massive so it fits largest number of people, doesn’t have any shape that would suit some and not others.

I bought a top on eBay which has had all the labels cut out and it’s quite refreshing to think ‘does this fit?’ rather than ‘what size is this?’.

LunaTheCat · 18/03/2022 06:18

I went into H and M today -tried on jeans ( high waisted skinnies) You lot are making me feel better! Are H and M jeans comfortable ? How much do they stretch?

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 18/03/2022 06:39

@BewareTheBeardedDragon honestly I will go dig them out and measure them up after work! They are minuscule.

YellowRosesWhiteRoses · 18/03/2022 10:54

Agree re oversized stuff. I bought a Cos coat last year which was an oversized trench. I had to buy it three sizes down from my usual size! But equally, I've had to buy things in a few sizes up before now. There seems to be little rhyme or reason

Ozanj · 18/03/2022 11:00

I spoke to H&M about it and they said certain clothing like knitwear / dresses that are made from natural materials is oversized to account for shrinkage in the wash. It’s why you should always buy your size from H&M. I have some gorgeous linen tops that are now unuseable because of their cheap materials.
