Help me find a wedding guest dress please

Please help me find a wedding guest dress. I have had a baby in the last 18 months and it’s been covid so I haven’t been to many events, and I have really bad sense of style. I’ve put on weight and want to look good and have no idea what to wear so I don’t look like an overweight run down mum.

Im currently a size 16, weight mostly on my stomach, hips and boobs, 5 foot 5 and am pretty self conscious so don’t want anything too out there. Budget anything up to £150. Thank you Grin

Have you shopped at Ganni before? Their dresses are just a little over your budget but they should have a sale quite soon. Quite a few very pretty, wedding worthy dresses in all sizes.

I find spending more doesn't always mean better. I love New look dresses or River island, they have some lovely midi dresses. They have some gorgeous prints out at the mo aswell

Something like this? Wrap style should flatter and avoid moniboob, long and floaty so won't cling to the wrong bits

Asos is worth looking at too

StScholastica · 13/03/2022 18:41

I was in exactly your position (same budget) until yesterday. I went into River Island and found my perfect dress for £18 in the sale. I would have paid 10× that amount for it. Go and have a look, mine wasn't in the online sale.

I love this dress ❤️
SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2022 19:43

@MavisMonkey I'm just gutted it's not in my size!

floofycroissant · 13/03/2022 19:49

It'd be helpful to know what you like or hate. Colours, print, sleeves, mini/maxi length. Are there any definite no-nos?

I think this would be very flattering and no out ther. Model is 5'6" so similar-ish

I know, and there’s nothing I’ve seen on there that’s wedding suitable.

What time of year is the wedding? M&S have a really good selection of dresses online, not just their own brand but others such as Hobbs, Seasalt, Jaeger and Nobody’s Child, and with various sleeve lengths depending on when you’ll be wearing it.

RewildingAmbridge · 13/03/2022 19:57

I've bought this for a wedding , it's comfortable, flattering and the material has a bit of give

Oh it was £60 from pretty kitty

TottersBlankly · 13/03/2022 20:02

Anyone turning up at my wedding in Hobbs, Seasalt, Jaeger would find their names had mysteriously fallen off the guest list. (The other brand I’ve never heard of.)

The OP didn’t mention it’s an early 90s themed event …

Soulstirring · 13/03/2022 20:02

Hope and ivy have some lovely dresses. I just bought a red embroidered one and o love it. I’m a 12-14 with large bust and the 14 was perfect

Anonymous42178 · 13/03/2022 20:09

@TottersBlankly

Actually 90's is really in at the moment!

TottersBlankly · 13/03/2022 20:15

Not for me. Was there the first time, buying neat little suits and Ferragamo shoes. I couldn’t bear to step into any of the High St stores from back then, now. They all lost their souls long ago.

You seem to have missed the comment where the OP said that she’s self conscious and doesn’t want anything too out there.

I've recently got this one. You may need to turn it up...you can tuck the floppy bits of the sleeves up inside the sleeves do it looks more like puff sleeves.

I've put quite a lot of weight on around my stomach and I feel really comfy in it as it skims well.

Pinkcadillac · 13/03/2022 20:34

This more traditional floral looks flattering and comes in petite sizes www.chichiclothing.com/collections/petite-midi-dresses/products/petite-floral-printed-pleated-skirt-midi-dress-in-navy

I've come across Ganni before and it's been much nicer than what's on their site now. There are some absolute horrors and most of them are so drab you could wear them to take the bins out.

This one is spectacularly awful !

Given what we know about the OP Hobbs or Jaeger seem a safe choice.
