Talk to me about hair extensions

I've never had them before, but considering it for volume / little bit of length. Maybe 3in longer than my current hair.

Do most hair extension artists also then cut / style after putting them in? And then at maintenance stages?

What about colouring? Right now I have an all over box dye to get my hair back to it's natural colour after growing out bleach. I'd definitely need to keep colouring somehow - at least to cover greys. But also I'd really like to add some highlights/baylage to give it some dimension.

Do I need to get that done first on my shorter hair so then they'd colour match to it?

Good stylists do a consultation with you where they discuss what you're trying to achieve, examine your hair for its suitability for extentions, and select the best type for you. They discuss colour and show you samples to match to your hair. They can colour it, but if you want to do it yourself, do it first and get them to match to it. Sometimes the hair needs ordering to get the right match, weight and texture. You usually have to go for maintenance every 5 to 8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. You may have a little cut to blend, but it should always be cut so it will look OK without the extensions too, so check this.

My new hairdresser warned me off them. She said even the newer types which are really expensive it still takes lots of care of them etc. She prefers a good cut and colour.

We're abouts are you based ?
I go to a salon who are absolutely brilliant for hair extensions, people travel from other country's to see them and their reasonably priced, lovely girls and tell you what theu can and can't do, I always do a colour that's easy to maintain, I have baleage an my natural colour is my root colour so it's very little maintenance and I have my hair re fitted every 10 weeks.
I wash the top half of my hair that's natural every day as my hair is awful, but the whole of my hair I wash every 2 weeks. Give it a blow dry an it's great ! I love having them in for thickness as my hair is so so thin an the hair They provide is the same thickness root to end - not a lot of extentions are like this now
Also silky soft all the time!!! X

@whoatethecake Does the same person do your extensions & colour?

My hair grows sooo slowly, so I imagine I could do the longer stretch between maintenance

I had hair extensions put in recently for the first time and they're great. I have chronic telogen effluvium hair loss and shedding. My roots are strong but my hair breaks off when it reaches a certain length.

I had a full consultation with a hairdresser who was recommended to me for hair loss. She matched the extensions with my hair colour - no colouring involved. Cut and styled it after. I haven't found it very difficult to maintain and wash it less than I did before. I do find I have to go over it with the straighteners every day but this barely takes 5 minutes. They've added length and volume to my hair which is great because I was very self conscious about how it looked before.

whoatethecake · 11/03/2022 21:20

It's a lady who does the colour and matches it to the extentions I want then another lady who fits them, just their process as it works quicker that way for clients.
The one I go to is in Merseyside, it's definitely worth the travel if you can do it as they've got awards an things to for their hair and service. Their fantastic and their hair is also I'd definitely get them! Xx

I used to have hair extensions (Great Expectations) and colour, done by two different stylists. It looked wonderful but was high maintenance and very expensive. I had to stop with Covid and then didn't bother, mostly because of the expense.

When people say it's very expensive, how much are we talking as no one has put down how much the cost is? I'm curious as I would like to get them, but unsure of the costs.

whoatethecake · 12/03/2022 14:40

I paid 450 for mine but that was because of the length and I had a full head highlights to. So the hair itself cost £340
Can get them a lot cheaper though just the quality

MissCarolina · 12/03/2022 15:17

Mine was £500 for the hair and the cut and style appointment. As you say @whoatethecake it was that price because of the length.

isonedaytoday · 19/03/2022 23:04

Are these tape in extensions or micro rings, I have very thin, fine hair and would love to try extensions but so unsure which to try?

@whoatethecake Would you mind me asking who you go to in Merseyside please?

I am close by and would love to go to somebody that has such great reviews.

takemeawayyy · 20/03/2022 05:48

@Shuttheblinds I go to lush locks in Ashton near Wigan, I do travel but I honestly have never had hair like it and Iv been getting extentions for over 10 years.
People travel country just to see them so I really recommend you try ! Xx
