Needle and Thread sizing?

Can anyone tell me if their dresses run small? I'm a size 8 in most brands, but a 10 in others including Self Portrait as I find they run small.

Just wondering if I were to buy used / rent what size would be best? An 8 or 10.

There was someone on another thread (mother of a groom) bought a needle and thread dress and it was too small - other posters said they have also found they run small.
