Brown hair with some greys and find most box dyes I’ve tried only cover the greys for a couple of weeks, then seem to wear off.

What do you use?

Or is it worth paying for a salon job?

I usually go to the salon but watching with interest as it might have to go after the price increase!
I usually have a balayage.

Jeeze a salon job is ludicrous isn't it?!

littlesnowdropfairy · 02/03/2022 21:20

@JammyCandy I'm a hairdresser. You'd be better off to go online and buy professional colour, better coverage and better for your hair.
(Obviously if you make a balls of it you don't have any comeback as they clearly state for professional use only)

Feel free to pm me with a pic of your hair and I can tell you what to buy if you like!

I use Garnier Nutrisse, have done for years. It doesn't show greys after a couple of weeks although obviously you do get root regrowth. I use 4 (dark brown)

Neither! I have found after 25 years of hair dyeing that the best overall is neither hairdresser (too pricey and never exactly what I want) nor box dye (nearly always brassy on me) but buying professional dye and developer and mixing and applying it myself. It’s pretty cheap (one tube will last 3 root touch ups). Then I’ll sometimes also throw in some bleach highlights on the top, again not box job but powder and developer. I usually buy in Sally’s or on line. Either way, I like the freedom to do it myself when I have the time and also the cost. But I sort of also like the challenge of how it will turn out. (Disclaimer: it doesn’t always look perfect BUT I have never burnt all my hair off or whatever people worry about).

@schooloutsforever
What professional dye do you buy? I've been blobbing blonde on my grey locks for about 10 yrs and flip between brands. I like L'Oréal Excellence Age Perfect and Josh Wood but would like to try a professional brand for a change. TIA

I buy professional dye as well now after seeing tips on here.

Works brilliantly, my hairdresser complimented me when getting it cut at the weekend.

Do my roots about every 5-6 weeks, doesn't fade.

Billandben444 · 04/03/2022 11:36

Which brand do you buy? Is it on amazon please?

BobblyBlueJumper · 04/03/2022 16:14

Wella Koleston Perfect. You can find colour charts via google to pick the right shade. To cover grey you also want a proportion of the equivalent Pure Natural shade and you also need to buy developer. I get mine from Amazon.

It's worth looking at xmondo on YouTube, he reviews people's attempts at hair colouring and tells you what they're doing wrong, or right

Thanks BBJ

I have mousey brown hair with some greys coming through i use L'Oreal casting creme gloss. It lasts longer than 28 washes I find but no roots showing as it fades gradually. I can get about 3 months between colours.
