I’m a 40 ye old slightly overweight woman. No, my name isn’t Karen.
I work in retail, so don’t have to think about a professional style.
I’ve always wanted to get my hair cut short, and really like this. What do you think?

@Fairislefandango

I love it, OP. I think some of the naysayers are missing the point tbh. No, the OP's hair will not look just like the model's. But those of us cursed with fine hair can still vaguely aim at a style we like. Fine hair is what it is. None of the models in photos of so-called 'haircuts for fine hair' ever look like they actually have fine hair! I could pick a million different hairstyle photos and my hair could never look properly like any of them!
This really pisses me off! I’d love just one website / magazine to do a ‘hairstyles for fine hair’ to actually use models with fine hair. Fine and thin and wispy hair.
dworky · 02/03/2022 21:23

@ThankYouVeryMuchGerry

I'd love to have my hair like that - my DH on the other hand likes my hair long!
Beware of men who think they have a say about women's appearance.

I had a short graduated Bob in the mid 90's similar to this cut but a bit shorter on the fringe. I went to my hairdresser with below shoulder hair and said I was sick and to do whatever she wanted to it. It was the best haircut I ever had. I loved it.

My hair is fine, with a natural curl and it worked fine, I just dried upside down for height and diffused the back. It's long now but I keep toying with doing it again.

Yo @Foxglovesandlilacs86 - you might want to read @EstherMumsnet’s comment upthread….

LightsoftheNorth · 02/03/2022 22:00

@Foxglovesandlilacs86

It looks nice on the model but it is a bit dated and is definitely a "Karen" haircut Blush
I despair, I really do... Why do some women join in with misogyny?
100problems · 02/03/2022 22:06

I've had that cut. Looked great. In reality both sides were pretty much the same length so if I wasn't in the mood for styling I dried if straight and tucked both sides behind my ears.

The key is a stylist who can really cut short hair and a colourist that can achieve the look because there's three colours in there.

Rough dry it and then use a big brush. Bit of Tony and Guy moulding wax to create texture and hold it.

I'm 50, but I don't lunch at David Lloyd. I don't have elfin features or a sharp jawline.

Rivering · 02/03/2022 22:36

My advice is make sure you have the exact same hair texture as any photo you take in, and be prepared to use daily products and blow drying to achieve the look.

You also need a nice shaped jawline, good cheekbones and thick hair to replicate this photo.

I also wanted a short cut when I was about 13. I blame the image on the 1980s Freestyle Mousse canister. Grin It looked terrible and took 7 long years to grow back long.

I have fine hair and have had variationa od tjis cut (which is a gorgeous cut, not dated, and to be honest why the fuck does anyonw care whether your haircut is 'on trend' or in fashion ir wharever? People making those soet of comnents all orobably wore the ubiquitous mumsnet skinny scarf years ago just to be in) anyeay...

It will be a pain in tje arse to get thw cut styled anythi lng like that pic, it's unlikely your hair will hold the volune.

Instead of aiming for volume iused to use V05 hair gloss to make hair look thicker, shinier and swishier so the cut had more movement

mdinbc · 02/03/2022 23:26

I say go for it. I think it's cute, and everyone in the world seems to have long hair in a messy bun, so you can stand out from the crowd a bit!

Here's a similar pic on a non-model with a rounder face. (taken from the internet)

SquirrelG · 03/03/2022 02:43

I love it also OP, and if you really want to try the style then go ahead. It's only hair, it will grow back if you don't like it. A lot of people can't see past long hair, but a good short cut looks great in my opinion.

StrictlySinging · 03/03/2022 07:43

I love it and have tried it but my hair won’t do
It :(

Go for it and enjoy

Bookaholic73 · 03/03/2022 07:58

Thanks for the feedback re the hair cut everyone.

I’m not not sure. I don’t have the time to style it regularly, although I was thinking about curling it sometimes.

If this wouldn’t suit me with a round face and fine hair, could people please show me similar length styles that would?
I’m 100% going short, as my hair is so damaged, but can’t find another cut that I like.

@Campervangirl

I've got something similar, it's easy to maintain, buy some root lift powder, vo5 do a good one, put it on your roots for extra lift
That's a good tip. Thank you.
GeneLovesJezebel · 03/03/2022 08:02

Misogyny is let go on MN, but discussing certain public figures isn’t 🤔

thesunwillout · 03/03/2022 08:08

@NeverDropYourMooncup

I have fine hair, too.

With hair as fine as mine, I'd look like a string mop that had done several rounds in a cement mixer - and the stuff at the crown would part forwards so that it would look as though I'd been partially scalped.

What did really, really work for me, though, was a just above collar length cut with a long side fringe - that gave enough lightness for my hair to actually go wavy naturally, whilst I was able to tuck my hair behind my ear if I wanted to - without it hanging down like a skullet round the sides from being too short/fine or having to use copious product, clips, grips or as though it was already growing out on the day it was done.

I didn't even know that I had wavy hair until then.

Since that point, I've always had it cut to a similar length and it dries looking styled from just a patdown with a towel. If it gets longer than collarbone, it goes flat and lank, if it's shorter, it goes flat and lank. But in that zone between collar and chin, all is perfect.

Your first paragraph has made me laugh.
We must be hair sisters!!!

cushioncovers · 03/03/2022 08:12

I love it

DrDetriment · 03/03/2022 08:13

I think it looks very dated and aging I'm afraid. I'd go for a sharper bob that's easier to style.

Livebythecoast · 03/03/2022 09:08

Are you going to acknowledge and apologise for your 'Karen' comment OP?

Btw, my name is Karen and no, it's a horrible haircut Grin

Agree with those who say you need to go with whatever style will suit your actual hair type, OP. I once had my hair cut short to look like Posh Spice, so I can't criticise anyone for trying, though.

I don't like the look on this model - she is clearly very attractive, but the haircut and (fake?) tattoo she's modelling make her look rough.

YisforWanky · 03/03/2022 20:02

@dworky I would not be happy if my OH grew long hair or a beard. Is this also something of which he should 'beware'?

If he had had either of these things when I met him, I would not have been attracted to him. Likewise, he wouldn't have been attracted to me if I'd had short hair.

Not everything is a red flag.

CambsAlways · 03/03/2022 20:13

This is the style I asked to have for my new hairstyle, but my hairdresser explained to me it’s not an easy haircut to style! As I have fine hair, she explained to get this look it’s high maintenance, sadly I declined and had a messy chin length Bob

SquirrelG · 03/03/2022 22:41

Rough? Really? Where on earth do you live - she looks perfectly normal to me.

Well, I guess if you want a relationship based solely on looks Hmm

It's not solely on looks, though. It's on your general approach to life. Tattoos, for me, are part of a general outlook which isn't my cup of tea (and a tattooed person would probably think the same about my rather middle-aged, middle-class modus vivendi and manner).
