Men's watches - help!

DoubleCheeseForNeville · 24/02/2022 17:37

Ok so I know men's fashion isn't a hot topic in Style and Beauty, but I really need some help and I wondered if any of you (or the men folk in your lives) can help me pick a watch for my seriously picky DH who's 40 next week....
He's never owned anything other than a real cheapy watch and he's always wanted a Tag Heuer (way way out of my budget.)

I want to get him something classic and Swiss made, that he can wear every day and I came across the brand Tissot who look like they fit the bill - does anyone know anything about them? Any opinions on this one in particular?

Anyone? Please help, I'm running out of time (my own fault I know!)

They've been going for years, their advert years ago (80's) had a lady being stood up, checking her watch, with the strap line 'Tissot watches, more reliable than any man!'

I think what you've chosen is very classic, love the blue face. I got my DH a watch years ago and had the back engraved, that was the bit he loved most.

Defiantly41 · 25/02/2022 13:54

Which particular TAG does he want? Maybe aim to get something with similar looks.

Tissot is a good brand

The other strategy is to look at TAG pre-owned, maybe even one from his birth year or another significant year www.watchfinder.co.uk/Tag%20Heuer/watches

Tissot are a well respected brand at that price point. Take a look at the various watches they sell under the name “Visodate” as well, they are well regarded and have a rather nice retro appeal to them.

CrappyXmasMarket · 25/02/2022 14:15

What's your budget? I like Hamilton watches, I bought one for DH for his birthday.

Tissot is a good reliable brand. For mid range watches 'Swiss-made' is often marketing speak for some parts being assembled in Switzerland rather than a sign of quality so don't get too hung up on that.

Have a look at Christoper Ward too:

Thank you all! Really appreciate the replies. Budget is probably max £350. Hamilton looks a bit out of that range but they look lovely. As you can tell I'm clueless on all this 🤪
I really like the blue face on the Tissot one too, as PP said. It looks quite a subtle blue as well, so not too overpowering. Glad to hear it's a decent brand. I might go for it as DH had an Adidas watch years ago that looked similar which is what drew me to that in the first place.

I'll tell my gf about this thread, she's pretty much the only woman working at her level in the international luxury watch market and there's nothing she doesn't know about from Swatch to Patek! I'm sure she can help Smile

DuaLeaper · 25/02/2022 14:47

I bought DH a very expensive Christopher Ward watch for his 50th. It looks great but it's never, ever kept accurate time and has been back to them so often I've more or less given up, since they don't seem to think it's their problem to make it do the single job it's designed to do. Hmm Some of the most lacklustre and infuriating customer service I've ever experienced. And we're still getting the hugely expensive catalogues and thick-papered mail outs, despite me unsubscribing in a fury at least once.

This quartz variant is within budget - www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1374101104100.html
This is the auto variant - www.tissotwatches.com/en-en/t1374071104100.html

This Tissot line is VERY popular with watch nerds at the moment as it looks very similar to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak which is an iconic watch.

Verv · 25/02/2022 15:04

Im afraid I cannot recommend Christopher Ward.

Hyperion100 · 25/02/2022 15:04

Yep...Christopher Ward.

They are british designed and swiss made.

Depending on the model, they have the same automatic mechanisms as many premium watch brands.

Thank you - funnily enough I've been looking at this one loads too! I thought the blue face looked a bit brighter than the one I posted in my OP, but this is definitely a contender - would you say this is better than the other one or is it just personal preference?
OP posts:
Verv · 25/02/2022 15:30

Its definitely down to personal preference. The classic is more reserved, and the PRX is more vintage/seventies sports inspired which is quite "on point" style-wise with watches at the moment.
I dont think you could go wrong with either.
Both the watch in your OP and the in budget PRX are quartz movements so excellent timekeeping and unlikely to stop unless the battery wears out which they do every 2-3 years.
Automatics are my main choice for watches, but not for everyone as they do need to be worn or put on a winder to stay powered so it very much depends on your DH's lifestyle and wear habits.
