I've bought a dress - how do i style it?

I've bought a dress to wear to a wedding, see pic. How do I style it? It's very much navy, although looks a bit more like black in the pic. The metal accents on the belt are gold.

I have the pink lipstick already (maybelline firey fuschia) and although I really like it, I'm always scared to wear it as I don't often wear lipstick at all and it's a bit 0-100 from no lipstick to bright pink! But I think maybe this is the occasion to wear it and just power through the anxiety... I'm very pale, so it's quite alarming striking.

So. If I go with the pink. Do I wholeheartedly embrace it and match my shoes (and bag and nails? Too much?). I think this might make me feel the lipstick looks more like a choice and less like a bit out of left field, so I may feel more confident and less self conscious.

I'm a size 16 and 5'6. Although in my head I'm a 12 Hmm. The mirror is always a shock. Honestly this dress is the first time in years I've looked in the mirror and not thought 'who's that fat woman? God I look a mess'

Shoes must be flat, cannot do heels anymore.

I also need something to wear if I'm a bit cold. Likely to be a bit of standing around outside for photos. Upper arms are chunky. Elbows doing that dimple thing when arms are straight, would like them covered. Lace/sheer would be ok.

Bag can't be tiny but doesn't need to be big, big. I need to carry some medical stuff the size of a puese. Plus phone, actual purse, scary lipstick etc.

Quite liked the idea of a beaded flowery purse, something fun. But maybe plain would be better?

Wedding isn't at a posh venue, so not super glam, but want to look nice.

Please help.

I really like the print kimono - how about flats like the pale pink but in that green? Keep the navy self belt with a big bust. Your plum hair and pink lip is lovely and you have very stylish eyewear! Burnished gold jewelry takes up the vintage vibe of the kimono.

Quitelikeacatslife · 21/02/2022 17:46

I totally love that kimono jacket , and with gold sandals would look amazing (and a great outfit with jeans and white vest afterwards ) I think you'll feel floaty and lovely in that

Debroglie · 21/02/2022 18:02

I love the last combination. And definitely go for the pink lipstick.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2022 18:21

I like the kimono.

Cstring · 21/02/2022 18:27

Yes to all of the last picture ! I think it will look great with your hair and lipstick.

doodlejump1980 · 21/02/2022 18:44

I love the pink shoes in the first photo. Where are they from please?

euniceanddudley · 21/02/2022 18:44

I'm not a kimono fan for a wedding. More a wafting around the house job to me.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 21/02/2022 18:59

The last photo you’ve posted is a strong look OP.

OhFuckBloodyHell · 21/02/2022 19:16

@doodlejump1980 they're from simply be, they're joe browns ones.

Thanks everyone, that's fab, I'm really happy with that look. A bit different to where I started out!

You have amazing lips OP. Really wonderful. But I hate that lipstick on you. I'd try to go for a more sophisticated colour if I were you.
Also nude or camel shoes and similar clutch bag with that dress

doodlejump1980 · 21/02/2022 19:56

@OhFuckBloodyHell thanks!

SymbollocksInteractionism · 21/02/2022 20:00

Your last combo is lovely OP, go for that

eunace · 21/02/2022 21:00

I love the pink lipstick, but I'd add a third colour - how about a Silky bolero type cardi in a silver/blue/ grey? www.phase-eight.com/product/salma-lightweight-knitted-jacket-403702479.html#cgid=jackets&is=false&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&pid=403702479&pos=12

pickingdaisies · 21/02/2022 21:16

Love the lipstick, the kimono, the dress. In fact, everything in the last photo. But you can also wear navy flats with that combination if the pink shoes turn out not to match.
(Maybe get your photo removed now that you know the lipstick is a winner)

glasshalfsomething · 21/02/2022 21:23

The last combination is great

CardiganAddict · 21/02/2022 21:44

All black - except for pink lipstick!
Black belt, shoes will be easier to find. Have a contrast of textures -shiny belt and a fake fur stole?
And maybe... Only maybe a bag in the same pink

Graphista · 21/02/2022 22:48

I like the gold sandals

Boleros may seem dated - I say classic for a wedding, a gold toned one would be perfect and the thing with a bolero at a wedding is you're not constantly fussing with it as you would with a wrap or similar

If you went the blazer route avoid the "work wear" vibe by getting one in a bright colour in a soft loose fabric

If going gold accessories you could go kinda bronze make up wise

Smokey bronze eyes. And a paler bronze Lippy

I am currently loving this nail varnish if you want an idea the kinda colours I mean -

With that dress I would go with a long length but not too chunky gold necklace and gold stranded style earrings or even pearls are meant to be making a comeback so long multiple strands of pearl like beads?

Where you can add a splash of colour is with the bag - you could go multicoloured or bright yellow or royal blue and:or with rings with cocktail/costume rings making a big comeback

Waferbiscuit · 22/02/2022 18:52

Bright colour and black is really tricky.

Go for neutral shoes or black shoes and maybe a neutral coloured shawl or kimono over it. But not bright crayon colour and black as it can end up looking quite cheap - not me who said that, tis Trinny!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/02/2022 19:06

It's not black.

2010rachel29 · 22/02/2022 19:41

Really like the last combination think the kimono really has a good colour combination to bring the rest of the outfit together. Also the pattern and hand bag to bring more interest and lift the dress.

Ddot · 22/02/2022 20:29

Black shoes pink bag and pink lippy. Nice wrap if cold. Plus a tiny brooch high on the left side.
You will look super

teawamutu · 22/02/2022 21:08

Kimono is gorgeous - you're going to look amazing.

Hamjamthankyoumam · 22/02/2022 21:20

Lipstick is great - I don’t know why someone’s said it doesn’t sound right for your colouring when you haven’t mentioned that at all in your op Hmm

With your hair as well if it were me, I’d go for an amazing pair of gold ankle boots with a small block type heel and a bag like this
