Boss Draggin Me Into Oldies Club

I’m in my early 40s - about 5 years younger than my boss. On a recent night out, he made comments about me & him being the ‘old timers’, ‘’golden oldies’ and how we are ‘the ones getting older.’ He then said to me ‘I was going to say just me but you’re an oldie too.’ Another colleague, who is only one year younger than me & working for him just as long, was to the other side of him & he didn’t include her in it.

It really knocked me for six to be honest. I’ve lost some weight lately and I’ve been taking better care of myself than before and people had been telling me how well I was looking. His comment has me looking in the mirror at my wrinkles & feeling like crap! Is early 40s actually old now?

I think the age that colleagues see you as often has more to do with life stage (if you have kids, settled down etc), how long you've been around for and how good you are at your job, rather than your actual age or how you look.

I always used to view my fantastic, married, parent colleagues as a different generation to me. Now that I'm settled with children (and better at my job) I'm having to reassess. They're actually only a few years older than me...

Yeah maybe … I don’t have kids & I'm separated. I am good at my job though

Yeah pretty rude. I think it knocked me out because I’m not all that settled & the last thing I need to be told is that I’m old!
