What is your basic item of clothing that is almost impossible to buy?

For me it has to be a flattering t-shirt. The absolute unicorn of clothing items, in my book. Caught so many glimpses of one over the years, only to find the neckline was wrong, or it was too boxy, or the sleeves cut too high, or the fabric too thin etc.

But today, I not only glimpsed a unicorn t-shirt, but I actually managed to trap it, try it on and it is actually really flattering. Honestly. So, I bought it in every colour they had, and bought 2 in black.

I feel totally elated and strangely drained. I never thought I would live to see this day.

Any top that is long enough.
Actually, shirts/blouses, I can usually find T shirts long enough if I hunt hard.
Size 9 womens shoes, that are not massively expensive or rubbish quality

3leafclover · 18/02/2022 18:34

We're going to need to see a pic, obviously Grin

Suasthuasanuas · 18/02/2022 18:35

Well now @peaceanddove it's just not fair to say that and not give the details Wink.

itwasntaparty · 18/02/2022 18:37

Decent knickers. M and s were the holy grail with their Brazilians until they skimped on material. Next equivalent has an elastic leg like a nappy.

@Suasthuasanuas

Well now *@peaceanddove* it's just not fair to say that and not give the details Wink.
Exactly!
Avarua · 18/02/2022 18:37

I want a plain singlet or cami with a built in shelf for my boobs that I can sleep in or wear under a shirt that is soft and made from natural fabrics.

Avarua · 18/02/2022 18:38

I also want swimwear that LASTS that doesn't go all the way up my arse!

LookdeepintotheParka · 18/02/2022 18:39

Black work trousers! Why is there so little choice? It doesn't help that I'm 5',3 and they're always too long (even the short length. Grin)

peaceanddove · 18/02/2022 18:43

No photos just incase I am actually totally deluding myself and you burst my happy bubble. But it is from Oliver Bonas, slightly scooped crew neck and sleeves that cut off just above the elbow. It was much too boxy in a size 12 so I went down to a size 8 and it skims but doesn't cling.

A smart jacket or coat. I have no neck and look like Uncle Fester in everything.

Inclinedtochatter · 18/02/2022 18:48

Yes to black work trousers! I don't suit wide leg or skinny or cigarette or tapered. I just want a reasonably priced straight leg pair with a 32 inch leg!

ThreeKneeRepeater · 18/02/2022 18:51

Plain black v necked jumper that doesn’t cost the earth.
M and S don’t seem to do basics any more.

actiongirl1978 · 18/02/2022 19:05

I get loads of my basics from M&S, I don't get the frustration with them.
I love their two packs of Vests, sleep bras, giant knickers that DH hates, and I buy their jeans, little flippy shorts and tank Vests in the summer.

My holy grail is shoes for work. I found the perfect pair of work shoes from landsend a few years ago. Suede navy wedges which had a little tag on the ankle which my my calves and ankles look amazing. I work in a school and I could run and walk miles in these.

They wore thin I wore them so much and then were discontinued. So I continue the search.

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2022 19:09

T-shirts are horrible for me now. It’s the fucking sleeves! If I wanted a non existent sleeve I’d buy a vest 🤬
Happy you’ve found something that sounds right up my street, I’m off to trawl the OB website. I’ve bought a couple of dresses from there previously and been happy with them.

isthismylifenow · 18/02/2022 19:09

I have been searching for a replacement thin navy blue belt.

Not a one to be found. 🙄

Moonflower12 · 18/02/2022 19:14

I've just bought some reasonably priced nice thick flattering work trousers from Nutmeg at Morrison's of all places. They are called pointe tapered leg at £16. So comfy and I'm 5'2" with legs to match and they are perfect.

RandomDent · 18/02/2022 19:17

Ribbed plain black vests with thick straps.

marriednotdead · 18/02/2022 19:31

A T-shirt bra in my size that is comfortable and fits me as well as my non T-shirt bras. I've been looking for years without success.

IcyWinterWonderland · 18/02/2022 19:38

A good quality pair of black leggings. All of the ones I buy always get holes in after a few washes or they are just really see through.

A good sized handbag with a zip which is reasonably priced. I can't stand those handbags with no zip as I am paranoid about getting pickpocketed.

Size 9 wide fit women's shoes which are good quality. I found some in primark and new look but the quality was just dire.

Scarby9 · 18/02/2022 19:45

I own the perfect T shirt.

I bought it over 20 years ago in M&S in Chester while on holiday there.

I still have it in my gardening drawer. The bottom hem has unravelled, it has worn very thin and has a hole on one shoulder.

But it still is the most perfect shape, fabric and colour. I have never found one as good since.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/02/2022 19:48

My dream buy is the pair of jeans that fit properly. Nothing else comes close.

Sexnotgender · 18/02/2022 19:48

I’m a massive fan of rapanui long sleeve T-Shirts.

lugeforlife · 18/02/2022 19:53

T shirt for me. I am short, short waisted and a bit chubby with not huge boobs but a big size of average. I am warm toned so black/white wash me out.

I want a scope it v neck off white/cream which isn't see through, washes well, not too thick as I like it to skim, fitted not boxy. Never gonna happen

mrsoverall2 · 18/02/2022 20:09

I had one in. Stitch fix box but it's was so £££ I didn't get it. I still rue that day

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 18/02/2022 20:12

Flat pumps. My feet are too wide and instep too high for them ever to work it seems.

Annoyingly it took decades and several disappointing pairs of them for me to realise this.
