To think this was an insult ?

I was talking to an aquitance not a friend someone I know through a friend we’ve talked a few times we get on ok, someone said we look alike to which I said that was a compliment for me as she was pretty to which she replied oh I didn’t think the same you are alright looking.
Immediately regretted saying she was pretty and took it as quite an insult and it’s made me think she’s a bitch. Even if I thought that I wouldn’t say it to another woman.

Yes of course its an insult

RedCandyApple · 17/02/2022 21:41

Well I think saying the pretty thing was a bit odd as well, I wouldn’t have said that

Lilolily · 17/02/2022 21:41

What a cow!

True
Milomonster · 17/02/2022 22:42

Horrid.

Emanchego · 17/02/2022 22:46

What's odd about complimenting another woman?

Spooked102 · 17/02/2022 22:52

@Emanchego right? I compliment women all the time if I think they look nice I see nothing odd about that, found it odd she felt the need to put me down.

Wow, you were very gracious and she met that with churlishness. She could have just said oh thank you!

I've been told I look like x or y and thought omg, really, I don't see that but I just say ''oh funny how we all see different likenesses!''.

CountessOfSponheim · 17/02/2022 22:54

It doesn't strike me as an insult. You explicitly said that you thought that she was prettier than you so comparing the two of you was a compliment to you; she said she didn't agree. She's disagreeing that she's better-looking than you.

Lifeslooser · 17/02/2022 22:55

That’s something I would say, that’s me saying your pretty, so repaying the compliment.

I am socially awkward though and not good at actually saying what I mean

Lifeslooser · 17/02/2022 22:57

She’s saying she doesn’t think the same as you that she is pretty and your the one who’s alright looking, not her.

That’s what I took from it anyway. Did she say it in a nasty tone?

MissMaple82 · 17/02/2022 22:58

Could of been humour, it is something I would say in a light hearted way.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 17/02/2022 22:59

It's the sort of thing I'd say if somebody said ''you and x look alike''. I'd say oh how lovely to know I look a little like X''. Why not be pleasant, ykwim? Most people return it, but if X said ''no way that's depressing'' or similar, I'd be brought up short by the unpleasantness.

Thenose · 17/02/2022 23:03

Is she northern? In the north-west, at least, 'alright-looking' = good-looking. Perhaps she was saying, 'I don't think we're comparable because you're alright-looking (good-looking) and I'm not'.

Chestofdraws · 17/02/2022 23:04

This isn’t well written, did you say she was pretty and she said she didn’t think she was but you were alright looking. So a compliment.?

Spooked102 · 24/02/2022 21:18

No I said she was pretty then she said she didn’t think anything of the comment, so I laughed and said oh she then said “I mean your ok looking I don’t think we look alike”

OP posts:
BusterGonad · 25/02/2022 10:43

Still not clear. She's either saying your just alright looking, or you're alright looking, implying she doesn't think she's good looking.

CharacterForming · 25/02/2022 10:45

You're overthinking a throwaway comment in a slightly awkward situation. Move on.

CharacterForming · 25/02/2022 10:46

Also I assume you were telling the truth and she is indeed prettier than you. So you're now pissed off that she was flustered and didn't tell you the lie your thought she owed you?

Definitely move on.
