Slips

I am sick to death of my dresses sticking to my tights. I read that slips can prevent static cling. Does anyone else wear slips and where do you get them? Are they uncomfortable or bulky?

I do for exactly this reason. Just have a couple of really cheap ones, think they were from Matalan a few years ago, they are shorter than the marks and Spencer ones so not seen so easily when I sit on the floor (teacher!)

ChubbyBroccoli · 16/02/2022 23:02

M&S does slips in different lengths.

Also you can make anti-static spray by mixing 1 part fabric softener with 8 parts water in a spray bottle. Surcare is good for this as it's unscented. Spray it on the inside of dresses, skirts, coats etc

Purplewithred · 16/02/2022 23:12

M&S have a fine selection of styles and lengths and I wouldn’t wear a dress without one.

Teaseall · 16/02/2022 23:13

As a quick fix, you can spray hairspray under your skirt to stop the static.
I have a couple of half slips & short length full slips from M&S & next, you can also get some fancy chemise's which work well too. Have a look at Pour Moi.

Another vote for M and S. Dresses hang much better with a slip underneath.

Thanks so much! I have looked at the slips on Matalan and M&S. The Matalan slips look like good value! I like the idea of shorter slips although I guess to prevent static cling, the slip should be close enough in length to my dress. The static seems to catch me mostly near the hem!!

Thanks for the recommendations for M&S. They were always my 'go to' for underwear, but I have found their sizing really inconsistent in recent years. Hopefully that won't apply to their slips!!

Looks like you're sorted but I was coming on to say M&S.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 17/02/2022 00:07

Slips and petticoats are essential for ensuring many dresses and skirts look right. Unless they are lined you need an extra layer.

BHS used to do great ones with adjustable straps so you could vary the length. M&S is probably the best place to get them from now though.

They are more comfortable not less, add warmth in winter and in summer help you feel cooler because your clothing isn't clinging.

A tip, if a full slip is a bit long pop a loop of elastic around your waist like a belt to make it shorter.

Dessertqueen85 · 17/02/2022 07:32

Never thought about wearing a slip in the summer! Thanks for the tip to make the slip shorter!!

I have this one
They come in different lengths and have adjustable straps. I just adjust the straps according to the length of my dress.

Yep, M&S cool comfort slips are the best. I always wear dresses and I always wear a slip underneath, winter and summer.

DidgeDoolittle · 17/02/2022 22:09

Another vote for the m &s cool comfort slips. I wore one on a very hot day last summer ( dress was see through without it). It was surprisingly cool on such a hot day.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/02/2022 22:11

I haven’t heard anyone say skip for 40 years. I did not know they were still a thing. It’s very comforting Smile

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/02/2022 22:11

SLIP not skip..

Your slip needs to be long enough to prevent most of your dress sticking to your legs. I also wear them in summer under longer dresses as quite often they are fairly see-through. I don’t. Want to do playground duty with the kids pointing out that they can see my knickers!!!

I think they are coming back because of the current dress fashions.
WellTidy · 17/02/2022 22:44

I wear them every time I wear an unlined skirt. Have done for years. I think I have six - different lengths and both black and nude. Mine are from M&S and have been worn and washed again and again. Fantastic value.

rubytubeytubes · 17/02/2022 22:48

Agree the matalan ones are great, different colours and adjustable! A lot of dresses are see through I find without them.

Hadn’t heard of the m & d cool ones so may get one

I know! my mum used to wear slips- i feel a bit like I am becoming my mum by trying slips!

Why? it isn't exactly a rainmate. A slip/underskirt/petticoat makes your clothes look better, they aren't old lady things.

Because I haven’t wore a slip before and I remember my mum wearing them. I don’t think they are old ladyish at all.

I have ordered two slips from M&S and am looking forward to trying them out.

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for you help and advice on slips. I bought two ‘cool comfort’ slips from M&S, which I wore last week. Firstly, they felt really comfortable to wear. I could definitely feel less static from my tights throughout the day. Also it felt nice to have an extra layer of warmth! I am a convert to slips!!

Intimissimmi sell them in many different colours, there is pure silk, and a silk mix.
