Hairdresser Advice Grey Roots

I'm naturally very dark brown but was finding it harder to keep up with 3 x weekly root touch ups (colour was also too dark for my middle aged skin tone) so hairdresser suggested going lighter all over, but still made the roots dark, so it hasn't really been fixing the main issue. It's now been about 8 weeks and I wondered if there's a different approach I could be taking to help me with my salt and pepper 'halo'. Pic attached.

I have a balayage which is darker on top and it needs a root retouch every six to eight weeks. Between times, I use a root touch up spray on my parting to hide the grey root growth. The one I have is L’Oreal but I assume there are different ones.

However, my hair is very long and yours looks very short so that might not be a viable option. Lighter highlights are probably the only thing that might help on shorter hair.
