Would you wear these leather pumps for an interview?

With wide leg black trousers, a tucked in silky blouse and Jaeger subtle dog tooth blazer? I’m so off heels after lockdown I feel really tottering and daft in them. I have some loafers but they are more country- style, tan suede type stuff.

@IglesiasPiggl I can envisage people wearing this type of trainer in this workplace but I guess that doesn’t mean ok for an interview…and I could have got it wrong

No. They're not what I'd call pumps. More trainers. Depends on the job though.

gogohm · 06/02/2022 15:06

No, wear shoes

TokyoSushi · 06/02/2022 15:08

OP Stop!! Grin Definitely not the trainers, and definitely not the pictures brown shoes!! You need something black and fairly formal, the brogues pictured would be perfect!

jackstini · 06/02/2022 15:11

Really can't say unless you tell us what the job you are interviewing for is and what type of company!

Out of options so far I would go leopard boots with the wide black trousers

No way OP. I interview and would reject even the best candidate for wearing those. Very unprofessional

tunainatin · 06/02/2022 15:13

No, just because of the white sole. I have similar but with darker sole that I've worn for interviews and conferences. Academic rather than business though

RampantIvy · 06/02/2022 15:14

The trainers and brown loafers look far too casual for a job interview. Once you already have the job and have sussed out the dress code then you probably could wear either.

Several years ago our then HOD was interviewing. Candidates had to walk through the main office to her office. One girl wore a smart trouser suit and flipflops. She became the talk of the office with people saying "who wears flipflops to an interview?"

She didn't get the job. I'm sure she was quite capable, but the saying "dress for the job you want" has never been more appropriate.

RuthW · 06/02/2022 15:15

No they are trainers and not suitable for an interview

Mo1911 · 06/02/2022 15:15

Definitely not

WoodSageandSeasalt · 06/02/2022 15:15

Well I also interview and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at that outfit. In the creative industry it’s more important to show style and personality than look like a clone in dull bog standard interview wear. So it does completely depend on the role/company.

RuthW · 06/02/2022 15:16

The loafers aren't really suitable either but if funds don't allow any new ones they will do.

TizerorFizz · 06/02/2022 15:18

M&S have some great black suede or leather loafers at the moment. Perfectly fine and a good price. They do chunky loafers too. Or you could look for ones with a slight heel - Gucci style!

strawberry2017 · 06/02/2022 15:18

Not appropriate for interviews

M0RVEN · 06/02/2022 15:19

I also interview for positions in a professional services company and I’ve never noticed any candidates footwear. I’d certainly not reject an ideal candidate because they were wearing flat grey lace up shoes with a white sole . I assume this is the part of the shoes that you find offensive @sometimespeopletakethepiss

Because all of our male staff wear flat lace up shoes.

Mo1911 · 06/02/2022 15:20

I recruit and have done for years. Nothing on the feet that draw the eye is best. So if you're wearing black go for something black, smart but not loafers, trainers etc something not chunky so that the panel aren't distracted by anything you wear. I must admit I'd be wondering why in earth you chose to wear any of these on your feet. 🥴

Good luck with the interview

TizerorFizz · 06/02/2022 15:22

Try these. All M&S. All are leather. The heeled ones are perfect.

Your brown ones are boat shoes. If you buy something like the attached you will be able to wear them a lot for work.

The patent ones look cheap. The style is fine, but patent is dated. The brogues posted above are much nicer, and far better quality.

SGBK4682 · 06/02/2022 15:23

I dont know, depends on the job I guess. I have interviewed a lot of people as part of my job and people nowadays don't overly dress up. More look 'respectable'. I wouldn't even notice their shoes to he fair, unless they stood out massively as not suiting the outfit. But I don't work for a multi national company or the like.

Back in the day I always wore a trouser suit and heels, and before that, a skirt suit, tights (urgh) and heels. But even Next hardly stock any suits these days.....

TizerorFizz · 06/02/2022 15:24

Did pictures post? Patent really isn’t cheap!

Or dated? Very odd comment.

SGBK4682 · 06/02/2022 15:25

PS we only ever employ people on their suitability for the role. We have never discussed their outfits.

Llamasally · 06/02/2022 15:33

Is patent cheap and outdated?? There seems to be a lot of it atm!
