18 years on MN and people still asking what to wear on planes

You’re not Joan Collins m8.
Why are planes such style issues on here but not in RL

What is the issue confused? Is it that people don't think you should undress on a plane? That's a very weird on to take issue with, even by MN standards.

More the fact that you are hogging one of the few toilets. Plus the toilets are not necessarily very clean.

You are expected to change -that why they give you pjs in some cabins
IntoTheNight · 06/02/2022 09:48

Oooooh OK. Don't see the major issue. But no, changing in those toilets probably isn't fun. I do tend to go with the layers I can remove and put on without totally undressing option. Actually, it's all pretty grim, air travel. This thread has reminded me why I hate it

18 years on MN and you use "m8" ?
SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 09:50

So, you're expected to change in only those few cabins that provide pyjamas. Not everywhere.

IntoTheNight · 06/02/2022 09:50

I thought M8 was a model of plane

Read it as "you aren't Joan Collins on an M8" Grin.

BoodleBug51 · 06/02/2022 09:50

Sometimes it can be really helpful to get other opinions. I flew to NYC, and had the stupid idea of taking my new leather boots off just after take off and putting a pair of slipper socks on. Took me nearly half an hour to put the bastards back on as we approached the airport and I was nearly in tears by the time we got to the hotel as my feet had swollen so badly.

I wish I'd asked some advice before my 1st ever longhaul...........

It is an aircraft 🤣

IntoTheNight · 06/02/2022 09:52

Oh fine, not quite, but close

CharacterForming · 06/02/2022 09:55

The recent poster was travelling with high level work colleagues and possibly not having time to change before going to a restaurant though. It wasn't as simple as "you'll never see any of these people again, wear trackie bottoms"

Zazdar · 06/02/2022 09:56

What is the issue?

The main one seemed to be that you would obviously need to use the loo to do so, and plane loos are always awash with urine on every surface.

Needless to say, that hasn’t been my experience at all.

Zazdar · 06/02/2022 09:58

More the fact that you are hogging one of the few toilets.

Ah, yes, that was the other one.

Again, groundless in my experience.

RampantIvy · 06/02/2022 09:58

Or very roomy. I don't travel first class so have never been provided with pyjamas. I just wear something comfortable and layer up because I find planes are too cold.

Horological · 06/02/2022 10:00

This reminds me of the people who come to London for theatre trips. You see them in groups with full make up on, viciously straightened hair and high heels.

I often wonder what they must think of Londoners though. Don't they realise really quickly that nobody in London dresses like that and that they look distinctly unclassy and out of place?

Lemonweightloss · 06/02/2022 10:02

Love this thread. The minute after my sisters and I have booked a holiday, we text, 'What yer travelling in ?!' It's a running joke.
I think it's a valid question. I usually spend a long time thinking about it ( and forthcoming holiday). It is a dilemma. You want to be comfortable ( but not look scruffy !) but you don't want to wear your best clothes.
I need to be warm leaving my hometown, comfy on the plane and look good abroad ( especially if we can't get in our rooms so have to leave luggage in reception whilst we head out to start the holiday).
It is a valid question.

Most people change on long haul it is perfectly Kemal and totally expected regardless of cabin

I do wonder wether all these people offering advicd ever go further than palma (lovely city )

RampantIvy · 06/02/2022 10:05

I find that I'm always in a dilemma of what to wear on the last day if we have a late flight home, especially If it is hot and sunny at the resort, and cold and rainy at home.

TheHoptimist · 06/02/2022 10:05

Normal- not Kemal

Zazdar · 06/02/2022 10:06

I’ve wondered if they ever go further than Skegness. Not quite so lovely.

Polkadotties · 06/02/2022 10:06

It takes me less time to get changed on a plane than some people spend taking a shit

PhoboPhobia · 06/02/2022 10:07

But if you’ve been on MN for that long surely you know that a lot of subjects come up over and over again? What’s wrong with that? You sound snobby and judgemental. It’s a perfectly valid question, especially for someone who hasn’t ever flown business before.

dandydear · 06/02/2022 10:10

Ooh find this thread quite interesting as I've been googling the question and looking up articles in this exact question for our summer holiday ! Have been there before, and am flying business (also done before, so not looking for tips ), but for me getting on that plane (especially after everything) is a huge part of my holiday and I want to get on feeling special. I also don't ordinarily tend to have clothes that suit a long hall journey as I live either in jeans (hate these on a plane) or in joggers that shouldn't be seen outside of my home office.

AlDanvers · 06/02/2022 10:12

What's the actual issue you have with it?

iklboo · 06/02/2022 10:14

Our very first flight to Spain in..oh, about 1978.. my dad wore a woollen three piece suit & tie. He was a bit warm when we landed.

Malibuismysecrethome · 06/02/2022 10:18

My first first class flight I thought I was at an upmarket pyjama party, everyone changed into pj’s and worked for a while and then went to sleep. Most were getting off and going straight to work or meetings on arrival. Drinking at the bar was definitely discouraged.
