People starting to have shorter haircuts again?

I’ve only noticed this recently, after many years of seeing long, loooooong hair on girls and women everywhere.

I’m in south Shropshire if that helps, but very few have very long hair now, it only occurred to me this week.

Anyone else noticed a change in this where you are?
Are shorter styles/cuts branching out?

I've not noticed but I'm pleased! I've always had shorter hair regardless of the fashion as it suits me and my hair texture best but I find it so bland seeing everyone with long, long hair. When I was a teenager there were all sorts of crazy (often awful Grin) styles on girls. It seems like teen girls now only have it long and all one length like it's the mark of femininity. I just think about how annoying it must be blowing in the wind and getting stuck under your armpits 🤣

eatthatcake · 05/02/2022 13:21

I don't think it's a new thing. Bobs and pixie cuts have been in fashion for over 10 years. I've had one of varying lengths since 2009.
It was a fad to shave your head during the first lockdown, maybe the growing out stage is contributing to you noticing more.

desperatehousewife21 · 05/02/2022 14:28

True, I’m growing out an undercut as we speak Grin but the rest of my hair is between chin and shoulder but it needs a trim I want it more towards chin.

I got some fringe/ bangs cut in which i then sweep to either side which I think suits me a lot more than just a centre part.

Before my undercut my hair was halfway down my back but it would get so knotty underneath and altho I could do more with it, it used to just look limp and flat.

prettyteapotsplease · 05/02/2022 14:44

I do hope so then I'll be in fashion again.

5128gap · 05/02/2022 14:50

Where I am there's a diverse mix of women of different ethnicities. Short hair has never gone away for some and long hair will never go away for others. I think it can look lovely either way on other women, but I prefer mine long.

burnoutbabe · 05/02/2022 14:54

I attended my graduation last week (law) as a mature student.

I did not spot a single female student who did not have long hair. Was odd.

Echobelly · 05/02/2022 14:57

Not noticed it, but I guess after two years of hairdressers being open and shut and some people just being forced to grow their hair/not having the option of getting a cut that needs maintenance, people are having them again.

More teens like my oldest have short cuts, but it does seem to be primarly ones who identify (like oldest) as LGBTQ+ in some way.

After having short hair almost continually frome age 7-35 I've had long hair for nearly 10 years now - at some point I'll cut it shorter again but for the moment it still looks better long; right now a short cut might seem a bit severe but I think the time will come when short is best again.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/02/2022 15:06

Long pixies (bixies) and mullet style for those brave enough.

TheMoth · 05/02/2022 15:06

Possibly some older teens. But round here, long, straight, preferably highlighted, hair is still the norm. Looking back at my old school photos girls' hair was much more varied.

I think that's because when we were young we made do with what grew on our head and if it was thin, greasy, curly, straight we had to work with it and have the style that worked best. Perfect straight hair could rarely be achieved with a brush and hairdryer, highlights were a bit of an orange gamble and extravagant lengths were only possible for a lucky few before extensions.
bippityboppity87 · 05/02/2022 16:23

My hair's short. Just above the shoulder and curly with a fringe. A bit like this, which I quite like. I used to always straighten it before. Plus I struggle to grow it out long enough without my hair splitting and ending up dry. I used to straighten it, but prefer what I have now

FrangipaniBlue · 05/02/2022 16:34

God I hope not, I quite like being different lol Grin

Butterismylife · 05/02/2022 17:37

Thankfully I’m not seeing anyone caring about straightening hair and haven’t done for years.
I’ve no idea why straight is still, on these boards, often considered the only texture that can be appreciated.
People say curls are lovely but still go out of their way to avoid them if possible, and frizz is considered the worst thing on the planet! Grin

Personally I like a bit of frizz, some lift and texture. I’ve seen lots of younger girls not giving a fuck about that and they look awesome.

It also seems to be connected to social groups - I still see the longer, pin straight hair on People who like the kardashian, sort of Hollywood look.

Yet natural texture appears more on girls who are more study focused, uni types or the slightly alternative…….and those who hike, ride, do various sports, etc.

So like many things hair often has a connection to our social background or social interests (punks, Britney’s extensions, and so on).

It’s a fascinating thing, hair!

And I see a lot more natural black hair too, on both young girls and boys. They look fucking amazing.

Female Hikers in the fells in the north always seem to grow long, long braids Grin, no idea why but I lived there for years and always noticed this.

And where I am now in Shropshire I see a lot of girls with hair in updo’s - twisted braids, claw clips, half-ponytails.

Odd;y I never see high buns now, anywhere.
They were such a huge thing across all social groups about 10 yrs back!

I’m a uni lecturer and not counting my mature students I’d say all the younger ones on my course apart from two have long hair, that’s two with bobs out of about 200.

JamMakingWannaBe · 05/02/2022 17:52

I went from shoulder length back to a pixie this week after growing out my pixie due to COVID.

9 yo of DD went from below shoulder to a chin length bob.

Neither of us are dedicated followers of fashion.

I think (in my household) it's a case of "new year: new me".

Crikey, can’t beat that for a statistic Grin I wonder if it depends on area - I’m more familiar with rural and city life.

Long hair is easier to look after. You don’t have to style it, just rough dry and put some smoothing stuff on and the weight of the hair and gravity do the rest.

Jazzyjeffery · 05/02/2022 18:29

I've just chopped my hair to bob length after a long time of having long hair. I like it, it's got more volume and I can flick it about. But, I do worry it makes me look older Confused I'm 36. I suppose I'm unlikely to pass as a teenager anyway Wink

astorsback · 05/02/2022 18:35

Walkers/hikers have braids because of the wind getting in their hair if it's loose. I call it my Heidi hair.

Cut it short then I hear you say but then it needs cutting every six weeks to maintain the style.

AlDanvers · 05/02/2022 18:43

Dd (17) has a short Bob, wavy hair loads of texture. She totally rocks it. We were at the Uni that's her first choice today for an open day for those that have offers. Thinking about it, the vast majority had long hair.

Where as all dds friends have short hair and when I drop her at college I would say its a mix.

Long hair is only easier to look after at certain textures. I find mine easier shorter. As does dd. It takes hours for our hair to dry when it's long. Mine just goes flat. Dds goes massive.

When it's short we both just wash, olaplex 6 & 7 and it's sorted.

isthismylifenow · 05/02/2022 18:44

My dd and most her her friends have shorter hair now, been the in thing for about a year or so I'd say now.

But we live in a hot country so that may add to some of the reasoning.

I am quite pleased they don't seem to have followed the look that appears quite common in Europe with the long , straight highlighted hair.

I don't think my dd will grow it out again for quite a while. She seems to be able to wear it differently styled a lot more than if it were long.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2022 18:56

Yep I’ve noticed a slow creep in of shorter hair, it started pre lockdown I think.

YeOldePotato · 05/02/2022 19:29

All the hairdressers I go to don't understand how short I want it when I say short and think I'm going to regret it even though I've had it that short before it's an absolute nightmare. I keep coming out with a mid-length Bob.

NotMeNoNo · 05/02/2022 20:16

I was talking to my hairdresser about how you never see short hair or perms on younger people and wondering if they would come back in. He pointed out from the 1920s to the 1980s women's hair was mostly short and often Permed so it had quite a long innings. Also we don't have the tools/products to authentically style say a 1920s shingle crop.
