People starting to have shorter haircuts again?

Butterismylife · 05/02/2022 13:00

I’ve only noticed this recently, after many years of seeing long, loooooong hair on girls and women everywhere.

I’m in south Shropshire if that helps, but very few have very long hair now, it only occurred to me this week.

Anyone else noticed a change in this where you are?
Are shorter styles/cuts branching out?

I also don’t see many fringes.

MapleMay11 · 05/02/2022 21:08

Mostly still long here but pretty much always styled and glossy.

LadyNell · 05/02/2022 21:27

Mines long mid back length with a ftige and I'm 53....

LadyNell · 05/02/2022 21:27

Fringe even

SapphireSeptember · 05/02/2022 21:35

I have long hair, but mine was really long before it became trendy (and will remain so.) I tend to wear it in a plait.

SpikeySmooth · 05/02/2022 21:36

I see a mixture, but it tips towards longer hair. I cut mine to a bob then grow out...then cut it again. (40s) DD (15) currently has a long style but wants to cut it off. She'll probably grow it out again. On the tube today we saw a group of young women in the late teens/early 20s all with long blond hair!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/02/2022 22:40

I have a Louise Brooks type bob with a short fringe - people frequently stop me and say they like it/ask who cuts it. Per pp I am also a lecturer and don’t teach a single female with hair above shoulder length.

MichaelAndEagle · 05/02/2022 22:51

I think long hair has been in for so long since ghds have made it so easy.

Shoulder length or shorter wavy bob seems to be everywhere among people of my age (40) now.

Jumpingintomenopause · 06/02/2022 00:10

DD 17 has shoulder length wavy hair but she mixes it up with curls, straight, high bun and braids.

I am almost 40 and have a jaw length Bob with a heavy fringe. Mostly worn wavy.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/02/2022 08:36

I have shoulder length hair and a fringe. I'm 58. I have nice hair, slight wave, shiny, sort of honey blonde colour. It's really easy at this length, any shorter and it needs more washing and fussing with.

Marmm · 06/02/2022 08:50

My hairdressers just don't seem to understand how short I want it and I keep ending up with a mid length bob. I'm going to find somewhere a bit edgier who might actually push it a bit

Flaskfan · 06/02/2022 08:54

Just past jaw length. I have to make her cut it shorter and shorter, otherwise she lets it stay longer, but it grows fast. It's also very blonde, so doesn't need washing as much as when it was longer and darker.

I tend to go sharp and straight, or scrunch and go. I find this style the easiest I've ever had. Reckon the hardest was long with layers, trying to get the layers to behave but not look plastered to my head.

Enzbear · 06/02/2022 11:32

At least half my friends have short hair. I think with the right cut/colour it looks fantastic. I have always had long hair- bra strap length and it's staying that way.
I don't like really long hair - waist and beyond. Just sort of drags a person down somehow.

SergeiL · 06/02/2022 11:45

My hair is at its longest ever and I am in my 50s. How do people cope with long hair down? Do you never go out for a walk when it is windy? Does it not get stuck in your armpits? Does it not get caught in your coat and then hurt when you pull it out? I am definitely not cut out for this hair. Having it massacred this week.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/02/2022 11:45

How old are you?

People were straightening their hair in the 60s and 70s, maybe earlier, but I know it was everyday then because my Mum remembers doing it. People have been artificially curling their hair for centuries.

Perms were huge in the 80s as were curling tongs, curling brushes, crimping irons etc. Colouring your hair was popular, although going lighter was risky in terms of chemical damage.

Extensions haven't been available to most people until recently, but people did lots of varied stuff to change their hair in decades gone by it was just that fashion ideals were different.

RunningInTheWind · 06/02/2022 11:54

I’m auld and therefore always surprised when people suggest “above shoulder” is short. Unless it’s had clippers taken to it and your ears are cold - it’s not short! 😁

isthismylifenow · 06/02/2022 12:28

@NotMeNoNo

I was talking to my hairdresser about how you never see short hair or perms on younger people and wondering if they would come back in. He pointed out from the 1920s to the 1980s women's hair was mostly short and often Permed so it had quite a long innings. Also we don't have the tools/products to authentically style say a 1920s shingle crop.
Perms are back now.

Especially for males, to get that pouffed look. Note that is not the official term, but I can't remember the name of the style when my hairdresser was telling me.

Slipperfairy · 06/02/2022 16:12

That pouffed look for boys is called a ketwig round here.

Mullets are also becoming popular.

Riverlee · 06/02/2022 16:25

I’ve gone the other way and over the last New Years, my pixie has grown out. I much prefer it. Had my hair cut recently. Can’t believe how quick it took - have a pixie with lots of layers took a lot longer.

Riverlee · 06/02/2022 16:25

Over last two years

CrimbleCrumble1 · 06/02/2022 16:30

I haven’t noticed but just the other day have started to think about having my long bra strap length brown hair cut into a bob. I have a fringe and I’m 52.

KylieCharlene · 06/02/2022 16:32

Here (NE England) nearly every woman/girl under the age of 30 that I've come across has long poker straight hair. Usually highlighted/balayage.
I live near two large secondary schools and the girls look identical.

ChickenStripper · 06/02/2022 17:53

SE of England and not many shorts here - if they are they tend to be sharp trendy undercut types or older women who have that haircut which is hideous unless you have an amazing face.

I'm 43 and in the midlands. I've had short (grade 4 at the back) hair for 14 years. I love it!

I'd never go back to the faff and hassle of long hair. 4 minutes to dry and style and I'm done.

I rarely see other women my age with short hair and the teenagers/young women I've seen have been very few.
