Non awful walking/comfortable sandals

We are off on holidays soon. Lots of city walking It’s going to be hot so I thought walking sandals. But they give me the heebie jeebies. I have Birkenstocks but I just don’t think they will be comfy enough for a long day. I think I need more support. Any suggestions?

Wasn't there a bit of a thing for Hotter Tourist sandals the other year?

jodielee · 04/02/2022 11:50

I work for Allbirds so I'm obviously biased but they're the comfiest trainers I've ever worn!! My personal favourite are the Tree Dashers, made from eucalyptus tree fibre, currently on sale too, super light and breathable :)

Coffeepot72 · 04/02/2022 11:52

If the rest of your outfit looks good, I think you'll get away with slightly less fashionable footwear.

XingMing · 04/02/2022 12:06

Seconding the Rieker walking sandals. Really comfortable and not fugly if you have a decent pedicure.

ExConstance · 04/02/2022 12:09

Hotter Tourist 2 are extremely comfortable for walking in and less fugly than most walking sandals. They are not exactly beautiful but at Edinburgh Fringe festival last year I was walking 22k steps a day and my feet felt great. Mine are gold.

Kangaruby · 04/02/2022 12:14

I have teva and fit flops and I find the fit flops comfier. I also have a pair of m and s foot glove ones which are v comfy, I find alternating days works well.

I would far rather walk the 10 to 15 miles that I would do in a pair of hotter sandals. Far superior to Berkenstocks and fitflops imo. Plus nicer colours!
ApolloandDaphne · 04/02/2022 12:59

For Orlando I favour my Birkenstocks or light weight trainers.

DidgeDoolittle · 04/02/2022 13:11

I have some merrell sandals that I refer to as my "sad sandals". They're so ugly. But, they are fantastic for walking miles in hot countries. I have had them for years and they are still perfect. You'll find that most people will be wearing a variation of these sandals or trainers, so you'll blend right in.

SallyMcNally · 04/02/2022 14:07

I had a great pair of Merril walking sandals as well. Would highly recommend. However if you want something a bit smarter then saltwater are also very comfortable. The ones with the thicker soles are more supportive than the thin ones.

Ah I'm intrigued now. I live in the US so I quite often do weekends away during the summer where I visit cities and walk a lot of miles exploring them. Would these be OK for that? Do you wear socks with them?

I really struggle with what to wear on my feet when it's hot but I want to do a lot of walking.

comeundone · 04/02/2022 17:58

Orlando is filled with sweaty tourists wearing shorts and Disney t-shirts and flip flops. Even looking adequate will set you in decent stead but comfort is all. Disclaimer: I like my Tevas (not in style terms but for walking).

I have a pair of these but in a darker brown, which I bought over 6 years ago and they are so comfy. I didn't pay this for them though sandals

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/02/2022 18:32

I'm going on holiday involving some walking/sight seeing and plan to get a pair of Sketchers , not sure which ones yet , but I don't wear leather so it rules out a lot of the ones featured .

TBH , I dont give a shit what they look like , if they aren't comfy , the look on my face will be uglier than any ugly shoe

SprintingAtlas · 04/02/2022 18:41

I have horrible feet (wide, small, large ankles and excessive build up of hard skin that make walking really uncomfortable for long days) and I've only found 2 pairs of shoes comfortable for long theme park days.

A really cheap pair of $8 Nike foam flip flops I bought out of desperation on my first trip and these Merrell sandals (https://www.outdoorclothing.co.uk/footwear-c119/womens-c122/sandals-c134/womens-terran-lattice-ii-sandals-p10920/s33323?cid=GBP&glCurrency=GBP&glCountry=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQiAuvOPBhDXARIsAKzLQ8HKcUZ3tu-qb-Xdfo70a-AAyXLyIppEaKRDfg7AfuSGzU1vncviCwaAnwlEALwwcB)

Due to my fat ankles the Velcro is at its limit and regularly pops undone but I live with it because the ankles keep them in place anyway (lol!) and because they're just so comfy to walk in.

Blueuggboots · 04/02/2022 18:43

I have a pair of keens. They are fugly but are SO SO SO comfortable....

Oh god don't! Sketchers gave me horrible plantar fascitis
RampantIvy · 05/02/2022 09:32

I find Skechers unbelievably comfortable, and alternated them with my comfy Earth Spirit sandals when we went to Orlando.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/02/2022 13:46

Yes , I love Sketchers but I don't want the slip on ones , I have the narrowest , hypermobile feet known to mankind so I need a fastening .
They do have some nice memory foam insoles in them which I can remove and put in one with better arch support .

Some of the sandles posted on this thread would make my poor feet cry Grin

These are so comfortable! I think they look ok as far as walking sandals go.

Snozzlemaid · 05/02/2022 14:10

@MorrisZapp

I get though a pair of skechers reggae slim sandals every summer, I can walk mile after mile in them and they're pretty cute if you've got a decent pedicure. Go a size down.
I wear these too. Very comfortable and I never have problems with Skechers.
RampantIvy · 05/02/2022 14:32

That's disappoininting. I would expect them to last for longer than just one summer. How do you mange to trash them? I love the look of the Reggae Slim, but they cross over an old foot injury so I can't wear them.

sometimespeopletakethepiss · 05/02/2022 14:34

Teva are just the best - made for walking and waterproof too;

Vicliz24 · 05/02/2022 14:46

I did a month in California with a pair of Skechers Reggae Slim . A bit walking like but truly like wearing clouds
