Someone explain Gilets to me.....

I want one. I've seen a nice pink one from Joules. But I want to know the point of them as opposed to putting on a jacket. If I am cold, then usually I would want my arms covered up too wouldn't I?
Someone please explain them to me. LOL

This thread is a little old, but if you’ve landed here looking for more info on heated jackets, we’ve recently updated our best heated gilet page with lots of great options, as rated and loved by Mumsnet users, plus info on how they work and whether they're the right choice for you. We hope it helps. Flowers

If your trunk is warm you stay warm. You don't lose that much body heat from your arms.

PyjamaMamma · 03/02/2022 12:51

It’s useful when you don’t want your arms movements restricted but still want to keep warm. I use mine a lot when gardening.

EricScrantona · 03/02/2022 12:52

I think they work for some people and not for others. Though, I can't imagine our bodies work differently. I don't care how warm my trunk is, I 100% lose heat through my extremities and am not warm if they are not covered by something warmer than the jumper people wear underneath. Although the look snug and fashionable, I am always cold in them.

Sortingfinances2 · 03/02/2022 12:54

I have a navy one that I wear at work and indoors at home - teacher, open windows, coat too restrictive. Hardly take it off!
I'll swap for my coat for outside though.

Bananalanacake · 03/02/2022 13:14

Could have sworn they were called body warmers when I was a kid.

They were, but calling it something new makes people buy it 🤣
GeneLovesJezebel · 03/02/2022 13:16

I layer mine under my coat when it’s really cold.
I wear it in the house sometimes instead of turning the heating up.
I wear it out when it’s too hot for a coat but too cold for nothing.

rambleonplease · 03/02/2022 13:25

They are great in autumn and spring when you have nippy days but not cold wintery ones. In winter though depending on the gillet you can layer up with a jacket on top for extra warmth.

Love a gillet.

confusednortherner · 03/02/2022 13:26

I wear mine at work as chilly in classroom and under my coat outside for extra warmth.

This, usually wear mine for gardening and dog walking.

I love mine for horse riding and walking the dogs - the pockets are really good as they are in the right place! (Mine are from Joules)

Puppylucky · 04/02/2022 22:03

I wear mine on top of a thinner coat or jacket to make it warmer without bulk- works for me!

Perfectlystill · 04/02/2022 22:08

I LOVE mine and wear it in the house when it's cold (all day), out walking the dog if mild, under a coat when walking the dog if cold.

I love it.

Yup they were called body warmers Grin Like pp said I wear them when it's cool but not cold .they are less bulky so easier yo walk / drive / store The pockets are generally much warmer than lightweight coat pockets .

I have one fleece one and a thin ish puffer type one plus a heavy denim one and I would still buy more if I saw one I liked Blush

leotardrock · 04/02/2022 22:26

I bought a long one with a hood last Spring on a whim & wore it loads!
I don't like driving in a coat, so for supermarket, gym , quick nip over to the corner shop it was really useful!

jessyjo2 · 04/02/2022 22:28

Life saver when kids dont want a coat on. They hardly even notice they are wearing a gilet.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/02/2022 22:32

Great when the room youre in is chilly.

Mossstitch · 04/02/2022 23:35

I don't like coats, they always feel too restrictive but a body warmer/gilet on top of a cosy hoodie works for me even when freezing❄️

LonelyBones · 04/02/2022 23:56

Ive got a thick Fat Face one which i layer on top of hoodies for autumn

DysmalRadius · 05/02/2022 00:00

I have a heated one - I love it, but it is FAR from fashionable!

NewYearCalavicci · 05/02/2022 00:36

@DysmalRadius
Is it a Milwaukee by any chance , I have been looking at there bodywarmers and gloves i like them but they are expensive !

DysmalRadius · 05/02/2022 00:45

It's not fancy enough to be branded! It was about £25 on amazon and I radiate smugness when I'm wearing it!!

NewYearCalavicci · 05/02/2022 00:53

Ooooh £25 that's good value, I don't suppose you can post a link . . . . pleeeeese

etulosba · 05/02/2022 01:02

Could have sworn they were called body warmers when I was a kid.

They were called quilted waistcoats when I was young.
