Home Hair Dye after Salon Foils?

I currently have a full head of foils - well they haven't been done since August - and whilst I am tempted to get them done again, I am finding the upkeep of them pretty expensive (£150 a time) and the main issue is just finding the time to sit in a salon for four hours! I struggle to find the time to get them done, I was meant to have them re-done before Christmas but had to cancel as my daughter had to be PCR'ed and the results didn't come back in time for me to go and I just haven't had time since.

I am really tempted to just home dye over the top of them, my hair is a medium brown and I would be looking to dye it a light brown/dark blonde - I am not going to attempt anything other than all over colour as I know I wouldn't do it well!

So before I consider it, is it ok to dye over old highlights / foils?

Yes it's fine but the dye will lighten on the streaks over time with the colour fading, also most hairdressers wont rebleach box dyed coloured hair so be sure you want that change.

Another option is balayage, you get the blonde but the upkeep is closer to once every six months.

If you get on well with hairdresser I would explain the situation to them and ask them for recommendations.

I did this with my hairdresser and they were really helpful. Hairdressers hate box dyes but they know people will use them, they'll appreciate you working with them to keep your hair in the best condition you can.

I have asked about this in the past and it seems to be even more expensive than foils and takes longer? However, if it means I can get away with it twice a year rather than every 2/3 months it might be an option!

I do like the blonde and I also like how it currently looks growing out as it blends into to my natural darker hair - so sort of a natural balayage I guess.

Really, it's just how long it takes that is the issue!
