Dungarees yay or nay?

mothtoaflame · 27/01/2022 20:32

I've been tempted to get some black cord dungarees for a while but haven't found any I have been able to try on. I saw a lovely pair in Oliver Bonas but they have now sold out and we're £85.

I'm a menopausal 44 year old who is reasonably slim with a pot belly. Where would I wear them and what with?

Have been living in sweaty Betty leggings and hoodies for the past few years as 100% wfh but want something new. Think I want to secretly re-visit my rave days....advice please.

Dungarees yay or nay?

Do you like Lucy and yak? They have cord dungarees. Wear with short or long sleeve tshirt and boots/trainers.

Trolleedollee · 27/01/2022 20:36

Yes to those kind of dungarees they’re great. Lucy and Yak ones are hideous. The fit is just awful. You can find some much more flattering ones. I wear ones like in your photo usually with a peasant style blouse under or one with a frilly collar. Look at Wyse or Gayle Rinkoff oh Insta for great dungaree wearers

EllaPaella · 27/01/2022 20:41

I like the ones in your photo OP.

nordica · 27/01/2022 21:10

I lived in them during lockdown and still love them at home. I rarely wear them out of the house though because it's such a pain if you need the loo and then have to take your coat off to get the dungarees down. 🙃

TheFairyCaravan · 27/01/2022 21:16

I’m almost 51 and love mine. My favourites are my denim ones from Joules.

DramaAlpaca · 27/01/2022 21:24

A big No from me. I wore them in the 70s (had an orange pair, fgs) and I'm not inclined to revisit them. I'd feel silly, tbh.

If you like them, though, wear and enjoy.

GlassRaven · 27/01/2022 21:26

Nay.
Not necessarily nay for you- I don't know you- but a definite nay for me.

pastabest · 27/01/2022 21:31

Try these from White Stuff

Not cord but black cord is a fluff magnet...

Surgarblossom · 27/01/2022 21:47

I personally wouldn't wear them. They look like maternity wear from the 1970's - but each to their own, different strokes for different folks and all that!

Seventies fashion is my favourite and I'm currently pregnant so you've sold them to me! Grin

Must be something in the water- I had a hankering and bought some from Oasis this afternoon! I fear it won't be a successful venture (41, 5'4, sturdy)

daisyjgrey · 27/01/2022 21:59

Always a yes for dungarees!

And if you're happy and comfy in them, fuck what anyone else thinks Grin

This I’m 57 ....I have a denim pair ...they are not like the Lucy and yak ones though....I couldn’t wear them
Pasithea · 27/01/2022 22:21

19 pairs and counting. Lol. Love them suit my disability.

Craftycorvid · 27/01/2022 22:24

High fives @Pasithea - not quite at 19 pairs yet, but give me time.....

I got black cord dungarees from Joe Browns and they are awesome Smile

mothtoaflame · 27/01/2022 22:37

Great thanks everyone.

Will check out the Joules and White Stuff ones. I did nearly order the Oasis ones too.

Clearly it's all about the fit. Will avoid wearing with bright coloured tops to avoid looking like an 80s kids tv presenter.

Ps. Loved Carries white ones in the latest 'and just like that'.

@Huckleberries73

What’s wrong with Lucy and yak??
🙄
Classica · 27/01/2022 23:37

They're such a divisive garment. I will yay them for you and nay them for me. The Lucy and Yak ones would make me feel like I was part of Rod, Jane, and Freddy.

I had a hysterectomy a few months ago. I bought some as they would be comfortable to wear post surgery. They looked fine but I just didn't like them. After I healed I gave them to a friend.

Positiveyearaheadplease · 28/01/2022 04:18

I have a couple of pairs, one fine needlecord in a berry colour and another dark blue heavy cotton, wear them in the house and to the supermarket but thats about it, but they are so comfortable and really dont care what anyone else thinks, both L&Y in the sale thought they were excellent value foe the quality.

RedRobin100 · 28/01/2022 04:26

Yay

yorkshireteaspoonie · 28/01/2022 06:28

Have a look The brand 'wyse London' they are expensive but the styling is much more sophisticated and 'grown up' (think teamed with luxury knitwear) and they are nearly always Modelled by 40+ women on their Instagram account.

Their dungarees look great teamed with broderie anglaise blouses in summer too. Clodagh McKenna (chef from 'this morning') always looks great in their dungarees if you're looking for style inspo

I've also got Lucy and yak dungarees ... which are a totally different vibe!

Try ebay for both as they can both be expensive brand new. They do retain their value for resale so you won't pick them up mega cheap but less than the the original price
