Mother of the bride - help needed

My daughter is getting married in early August. I'm not sure where to start in finding an outfit and would welcome recommendations.

Venue is a country hotel, there will be about 80 people in all. I'm 5'10"", late 50s, size 12 and tend towards tailored, elegant clothes for formal wear. Not keen on wearing a hat but will if needs must (absolute no to anything approaching a fascinator though!).

I've thought of starting with John Lewis personal shopper but the one time I tried that previously I was a bit underwhelmed.

I'd really appreciate any guidance for ideas to try. Thanks in advance

Lots of good ideas, thank you.
The Veni Infantino dresses are definitely my sort of thing.
I’ll work my way through the other suggested companies later today.
Really appreciate the input

@alongtimeagoandfaraway same here. MOB for June in Ireland. Have had lots of stuff delivered but keep going back to Shibumi. As I'm short 5'2" and 34DD but size 10 elsewhere, it's proving really difficult as everything is too long in the body! Have finally resorted to fining a competent dressmaker who has made a toile for me of trousers and top and will make up this in silk with a Shibumi jacket. Have found Shibumi really helpful. I live offshore and shops here are awful choice wise! And no to fascinators!

I have just had the same issue. Not interested in trad mother of bride outfits. Really not sure where to go or what to try. I did a personal shopper experience at John Lewis. It's was great. Ended up with a lovely outfit in 1.5 hrs and something I NEVER would have picked up off the rack normally. Was really going for ideas but ended up getting the outfit in record time. Would definitely recommend.

I'm in the same situation and have just ordered www.littleblackdress.co.uk/raishma-laurie-sequin-dress-ss1933-17 . Little black dress stock Gina Bacconi and various other brands. Worth a look?

QueenOfHiraeth · 28/01/2022 22:32

I went the other way to most of you and wanted a traditional MOB outfit rather than something I would wear at other events. I went for Condici dress and jacket with a hatinator. It was very much admired on the day and in photos so well worth the cost.
Having said that I am well into plus size so find it harder to find good quality outfits that look stylish. I discovered that John Lewis in our nearest large city don't do personal shopping in plus sizes (or didn't then) unless you book several weeks in advance so they can bring stuff in from other shops because their ranges are limited

Why don’t the sites show what real women will look like? Not everyone is a 5’10” size 6? IMHO if they showed the same dress on ladies in a range of sizes then people could get a better understanding of what they would look like instead of being disappointed!

Shibumi does. And has spurred my diet.

@Rina66

I like some of the Veni Infantino dresses but they are about £500 each.
MoG here and love these dresses. I'll be looking for something like this. Have worn this brand in the past for weddings. Love the pale blue which will suit my colouring. I also intend wearing a hat.
RosesAndHellebores · 29/01/2022 11:05

The Veni infantici and condici are just not me. Shubimi in a dark colour would work for me over silk tailored trousers. My usual go to for special occasions is Caroline Charles.

I'm the MoG so very conscious of letting it be the MoB's day (and of course the bride's). They are wedding dress shopping this week.

Also early September could be blistering hot or damp and chilly. I suppose a dress and coat is a possibility if I can find a well tailored one - possibly Caroline Charles?

bouncydog · 29/01/2022 17:39

@rosesandhellebores Shibumi do some beautiful silk dresses and coats. I am going to get silk trousers and top made to go under one of their jackets. Lalarge Beaumont also do beautiful silk coats and dresses.

Ohmycron · 29/01/2022 17:45

I would say just wear whatever shape fits you normally put in a better fabric or different colour. The shibume website looks a bit Duchess of Cornwall

RosesAndHellebores · 29/01/2022 17:49

@Ohmycron - not a problem for me Smile

If you’ve got a rough idea as to what you’d like there’s always the option of getting a dressmaker to make you up something (or e.g. making you a coat/jacket to wear with a dress you already have) My mum took this approach for my sister’s wedding and liked that, for example, she could get a slightly longer dress (she wanted mid-calf while lots of the stuff in the shops was just below the knee) and she could get exactly the colour she wanted.

Barnowl25 · 01/02/2022 10:40

I am mob in june and am wearing a veni Vinci dress. The woman who owns the wedding dress shop my daughter went to said 'everyone wears a fitted dress with long or short jacket in pastels, don't be afraid to go bold' so I did! And it has pockets
