Experiences of Vinted

I need to start over with my wardrobe. I’m 46 & stuck for what to wear. I’d like to try & buy better quality clothes but don’t have loads of spare money. I had a look at Vinted for the first time today and saw some lovely things.
I thought perhaps I could use this to buy some things from better quality brands I’ve never tried before. But I’m a bit hesitant in case I buy and it doesn’t fit or suit or not good condition, I will have wasted money as can’t return like you would to a shop. I’ve bought from ebay in the past & had this problem a couple of times.
I’m just wondering what people’s experiences here are of using it?

Really good! Anything I’ve bought that doesn’t fit I’ve sold again in a week or so. Just loose the postage. It’s like friendly e bay

SylviasMotherSaid · 24/01/2022 23:04

I really like it and although I have had issues with delivery company losing parcels temporarily I have always got them in the end up . One tip is to sort categories into newest listed first and another would be to make offers on anything listed for over a week . It’s such a good alternative to all of the fast fashion websites and I’ve also managed to get some brand new premium beauty products on there too I highly recommend it .

Littlemiss74 · 24/01/2022 23:08

Thank you it does sound great. I guess I’m just a bit unsure how the sizing would be for brands I’ve not tried before. I couldn’t see the cost for postage either anywhere. Is it better than ebay?

I've used it a few times and have been very pleased.
I was looking for specific unique items, mostly winter dresses, pure wool, cashmere etc high quality in very good condition.
Sellers are very helpful and you can ask for all measurements beforehand if you are not sure.
Best thing to do is to set a low budget and stick to it. Less of a gamble than ebay or depop in my experience as it's not flooded with 'professional' sellers yet.
You can always resell but you'll make a bit of a loss, lots of good quality items are quite low in price.
Not all cards are accepted for payment though- I had quite an issue with this.

hidingfromthemouse · 24/01/2022 23:15

Have you tried charity shops?

I was the same as you, not a lot of money so buying cheap clothes, that don't last and end up costing more. Now I browse the charity shops regularly and my wardrobe has never been so good. Mostly good quality stuff, some even new.

Branster · 24/01/2022 23:15

Postage: you can see if you try to buy without completing the transaction. Some have different options royal mail, Hermes, DPD at different prices.
I'm not entirely sure, but my understanding is that sellers don't get paid until you confirm receipt do it would be in their interest to be honest.

Chishnfips · 24/01/2022 23:33

If your not sure ask the seller the question. Some clearer pictures or measurements. Things that have been on there for a long time are usually open to offers.

stevalnamechanger · 25/01/2022 00:53

Brill! I buy not sell , tend to buy from brands I know

DedalusBloom · 25/01/2022 02:00

Can be a bit of a faff but try looking on the original retailers website for a size chart as they often will give measurements on there.

I've had a lot of luck selling on Vinted, but haven't bought anything.

I used to get a lot secondhand. I did a 'buy nothing new' challenge one year and developed a bit of an ebay and charity shop habit. But, for me, I've not found it the best way to shop. I ended up with things that were almost right, but not quite. I think everything I've bought secondhand has now been sold on or donated, whereas there are things I have bought new which have been in my wardrobe for many years. So, my new intention is to buy significantly less but to only buy when something is absolutely perfect and hopefully fairly classic so it won't go horribly out of style.

I'm making a list of what I want in a perfect, classic, capsule / minimalist wardrobe and am only buying from that list. There was a thread on here ages ago which gave me the idea.

psuedocream3 · 25/01/2022 07:39

I'm a fan, but I tend to buy from brands I know well and look for specific items from past seasons that I had my eye on but couldn't justify even the sale prices at the time. I haven't ever been disappointed and saved an absolute fortune on retail price.

KimDeals · 25/01/2022 07:43

Well you’ve all convinced me!! I’m in Smile

RamblinBoy · 25/01/2022 07:45

I've sold loads on their recently and its been fab. So much better than eBay.

I've bought one or two bits and they've mostly been great. Planning to resell or donate the bits and bobs that haven't quite worked.

Like a PP said though this is a good time to go to charity shops. Lots and lots of people clear out in January and the shops are well stocked. We have some near here that have beautiful things in them (call themselves 'boutiques') and some that aren't great. You get to know which ones are which.

I'm going to try to buy less this year. Selling dozens of items on Vinted has brought home that I just have far, far too much.

RamblinBoy · 25/01/2022 07:46

Btw one tip for Vinted is, as mentioned, that it is friendly. I've had loads of lovely, friendly communications with buyers and sellers.

The few that are basically rude or really abrupt stand out and don't make for good buyers.

Duvetflower · 25/01/2022 08:12

For sizes, if you aren't familiar with the brand, you can measure existing clothes that fit well well and compare them to the listed measuremenrs.

Russell19 · 25/01/2022 08:45

I've started using it for buying and selling. It's been great, no fees to sell and I actually like that buyers pay their own postage and I get a pre paid label to attach. Most clothes are under £5 and I've had one dress that didn't sell so sold it on at the same price. That's the risk you take really.

schmalex · 25/01/2022 12:33

I love it. Have bought loads of great stuff and also sold unwanted things very easily.

I take body measurements and compare with the size guide on the brand's website and also tend to buy brands I love so I know how they'll fit. If they don't, I resell.

Iusedtobecarmen · 25/01/2022 12:39

I bloody love it
Never really bought much used stuff before, but I'm converted
I'm really selective and choose maybe brands that are a bit more expensive eg tommy Hilfiger
Ivw bought several things including 2 coats which were immaculate
One was a Joules
I've started selling too.
Things go cheap but its better than giving them Away!!

RunningInTheWind · 25/01/2022 12:39

I’m a fan, it seems more like eBay was 15 years ago. I’ve had some lovely stuff.

Dinnertime22 · 25/01/2022 13:49

Excellent. I have sold and made some great buys.
I will not use Ebay again.

Latteandcappuccino · 25/01/2022 17:38

Another recent vinted convert (thanks to MN) and now slightly addicted.

The postage varies from seller to seller, I get mine delivered to a parcel point normally, so that I can pick up later.

I have only bought from brands where I know my size but so far no negative experiences and some lovely items and one lost parcel but thats hermes fault

Alloutofglove · 26/01/2022 11:42

I've a bought a lot and not listed anything to sell but my experiences have been very positive

Deux · 26/01/2022 11:48

Love it. For sizing have a look at the brand online shop at the reviews for an idea on sizing.

My friend has made since December £180 just by clearing out her wardrobe, all stuff she would previously sent to the charity shop.

AprilLady · 26/01/2022 17:02

So I’ve recently tried to sell some unwanted beauty products on Vinted. It started off well, but over the last few days I’ve had two buyers make offers (on different items) which I have, after some thought, accepted even though the offers were quite low. But the potential buyers have then not followed through with a purchase. Is this common in Vinted? I prefer the eBay system where if you make an offer it is binding, so you’re not messing sellers around.

SarahJessicaParker3 · 26/01/2022 17:06

If they make an offer and you accept, they then still have to buy it. But the listing stays up, so you can sell it to someone else if they are too slow! I have had this. Had an offer, accepted it. They didn't complete the purchase and then someone else just bought it full price
