Good things I never seem to have

I have decided that I want to upgrade all of the little things I have in my wardrobe which are just not right; I want to get the good version I never seem to have. For instance, I am going to throw out all of the crispy, novelty socks which I never wear but which stop the drawer closing properly and instead get some nice quality, fine weave ankle socks in black. Possibly made from bamboo (all sock upgrade recommendations welcome).

Also white T-shirts. Mine are all grey and generally rubbish. I am going to get a good one.

What else?

Boots do lovely bamboo black socks. The band at the top isn't too tight, doesn't leave marks, which is rare in a sock. Really appreciate that about them, plus they're so soft and smooth.

ToManderleyAgain · 23/01/2022 19:00

Well fitting everyday underwear: comfy pants that don’t give vpl, and if you have a bra you really get on with then buy it in multiples

2DogsOnMySofa · 23/01/2022 19:34

Novelty t shirts that everyone buys me. Even my dad has started this now and bought me one for Xmas. I have a draw full of them that I never ever wear

Ponks · 23/01/2022 19:51

Nice nightwear. I've been sleeping in ratty t shirts for years, last year I upgraded to a couple of pairs of nice pyjamas which feel much nicer.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 23/01/2022 22:14

I have been doing this - putting thought into each purchase etc. Had a big clear out. I got massively side tracked by the sales though and must have about £100 of clothes that were not on the list.

I tried to change my underwear, instead of M&S Black Boy Shorts, I bought 3 boxes of full brief, high legs and midis in different colours.

Turns out I hate coloured knickers! Also it may be my bum but the knicker elastic makes a snapping sound which I hate in all sorts of ways. They don't feel grown up at all. And they give me VPL.

So they have become my sleeping knickers and I have gone back to my beloved black M&S shorts.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 23/01/2022 22:25

Really good jeans. The flattering ones you get when you first try on M&S ones, before they go all saggy and reveal their uselessness.

Brogues · 23/01/2022 22:50

Before Christmas I bought myself a posh Liberty shower cap after using a Tesco basic one that didn’t fit and looked awful for absolutely years. I now feel all posh in the shower.

I got my DS some bamboo socks from sockshop and they have washed so nice I decided to treat myself to some too. Only problem is we are only one size apart so I a going to be impossible to keep them separate.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/01/2022 23:08

Socks here too! I bought some lovely merino pairs from John Lewis last year and they are a revelation. Then at Christmas DP got me some cashmere socks for bed, and god they are perfect. I found a second pair in the Reiss sale half price, so now I wear one, hand wash the other. Like clouds on my chilly feet.

custardlover · 23/01/2022 23:47

May I ask about cashmere socks? Do they stay up? I have a fear of socks falling down under the sole of my foot while wearing boots and I imagine the lovely soft socks do that - no?

I bought myself some insanely expensive cashmere mix socks from Celtic &Co.wore them once and they were heavenly, and then 1 somehow found it’s way into the washing machine. It was so distressing that I will not replace them.

NoToLandfill · 24/01/2022 00:00

Brouges I sew a few stitches of a different coloured thread under each of one of the sizes of socks. Then 1 person has the sew socks. No sock mixups!

EmmaMaya · 24/01/2022 00:02

Second well fitting underwear!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2022 00:29

I wouldn’t actually wear the cashmere socks as outside socks - I think they would wear out really quickly because they are delicate. I wear mine in bed (don’t judge, we are in Scotland and it is very cold!) or with Ugg boots for WFH. The Uggs also never leave the house.

Jumpingintomenopause · 24/01/2022 00:40

Good everyday underwear. I have five of the same bras in black x2, white and nude x2 plus 2 pairs of matching pants per bra.

I recently upgraded my sports socks and now need more sports bras as exercising 6/7 days. I have dedicated pants I wear to workout too. 😳

DukeofEarlGrey · 24/01/2022 00:43

@Ponks

I agree with this. I just did the same and am surprised by how much nicer it feels.
AgathaMystery · 24/01/2022 00:49

OP I am in the process of ridding myself of things I don’t love so yes, excellent fitting underwear. I have lots of comfy knickers now in black or ‘flesh’ (eew I know but it is what it is, they are useful). I wear an old pair and Chuck them out. Same with socks. I am wearing the old ones and chucking them each evening.

Pajamas I have 2 lovely pairs from cyberjammies and a pair of cuffed bamboo trousers from Thought. Kind of posh lounge wear.

Did all my drawers last week and am going to do it again tomorrow.

I’ve gone though all my makeup and skin care and ditched anything I don’t really love. I’ve binned all the stuff I’ve kept beside it might be useful/was expensive. It’s all gone.

I’ve replaced worn towels too.

Tulipsinmyvase · 24/01/2022 05:28

I always feel a nice scarf can totally change an outfit! I’ve got a few silk ones and some decent wool ones for cold days.
When a plain black work outfit needs a splash of colour a scarf is great 😊

humblesims · 24/01/2022 08:05

if you have a bra you really get on with then buy it in multiples
this with bells on. I have just found the right bra for me (finally!!! after years of bad bras) so I am getting rid of all the old ones some of which I've only worn once - they can be donated to Against Breast Cancer - and will be stocking up on my new bezzy bra.

Littlemiss74 · 24/01/2022 08:33

@Ponks where are your pyjamas from please? I would like a couple of nice pairs too and get rid of all the old mismatching tat.

Ponks · 24/01/2022 08:46

@Littlemiss74 I got a cotton pair from Boden (during one of their offer periods) and a thicker cotton pair from Jigsaw (in the sale at over 50% off). I did also get a pair from Next but they aren't as good quality as the others. Sounds silly but perks me up having some nice nightwear.

DedalusBloom · 24/01/2022 10:42

I did this before Christmas - sent a load to charity and bought the things that were missing to fill in the gaps in my wardrobe

I had the money at the time and I'm so glad I did it - I feel so much more put together as I know which things "go" and don't have the feeling of dread when I open the wardrobe any more.

I'm also quite a repetitive wearer of clothes so once I find a silhouette that works for me I just rinse and repeat with different variations.

TK Max often do nice bamboo socks. They are nice but I find they wear through faster than wool.

Agreed re bras - I finally found a 36G in Marks that is comfy and inexpensive so I loaded up on those.

I'm a big fan of M&S flexifit knickers - I got rid of all the pairs that didn't match anything or had gussets of doom.

I got rid of bobbly tights, holey gloves, scarves that were too big, short or the wrong colour, novelty anything and any^^ clothes with bleach or paint stains on that couldn't be kept as DIY wear. Bags I was ruthless with as I use the same four or five on rotation and some hadn't seen the light of day in years.

It makes me feel that bit better to feel more put together when I get dressed now.

belinda789 · 24/01/2022 17:52

@custardlover
Esprit socks (thin calf length) - good quality
and
Fruit of the Loom Tshirts (can't wear them out and they are quite inexpensive.....

custardlover · 24/01/2022 19:28

All of these tips are GREAT thank you. I am doing my drawers h the is weekend: begone cartoon pyjamas! Off with you, tatty pants!

Deladus what is a gusset of doom?!

NoToLandfill · 24/01/2022 23:01

Where do we buy really nice white t shirts? That don't shrink, nice fit. Do they exist?
