Styling product to turn waves into curls?

I've had a lovely new haircut with some colour and have invested in a diffuser dryer so am now on the case to make the most of my wavy hair and try to coax it into curly. An overnight plait works wonders but I need something I can put in when I style it to keep the curl but without the scrunchy look I associate with mousse from my teenage years!!

I don't think I'm in full on curly girl territory as my hair isn't actually curly!

several mini space buns

Is that the style ie lots of small buns made of twisted hair?

I do lots of twists before diffuser drying which does work beautifully but the waves drop really quickly so im after some kind of 'setting' product?

Do the buns on damp hair and let them dry overnight.

I've not done it for a while but I used to mix hair gel with a bit of conditioner and scrunch the curls

Tigi bed head foxy curls mousse is your friend. I couldn't believe how curly my hair went with this. It does make the hair crunchy but you just have to scrunch it out!

Mousse works best on my hair. If it's crunchy when you dry it just scrunch it out and it'll be lovely and soft.

Thanks all - I've got cheapo mousse already so glad I checked before spending £££ on specialist curling products!

I second mini twists on damp hair (with a swipe of setting product such as non crunchy mousse) clipped up in swirls of sorts and slept on with satin cover. I have very curly hair 3bish so have never tried this but my mum has poker straight hair and slippery texture, and it's what she does to get curls. Hairspray when it's been taken down and styled. It seems to last her a several hours before turning to waves

Elnet creme de mousse is fabulous for making my wavy hair curly without the crunch.
