Are leather leggings still a thing?

Browsing online shopping for things I might wear once I’m back to a pre pregnancy shape if not size.

Are leather look leggings still a thing? I liked them pre baby but I feel like I’ve been in maternity wear forever and now I’m not sure what I even want to wear.

People who insist that they'll be wearing skinny jeans to their grave might want to stock up whilst they're still in the shops.

I'm not convinced by this. People were saying skinnies were over donkeys' years ago, but they haven't actually gone anywhere. Much as it profits the fashion industry to tell us that we should be embarrassed to be seen in the clothes we still own, and must go straight out and buy new ones, only gullible idiots ditch the clothes that suit them in favour of new ones that don't.

Shmithecat2 · 20/01/2022 12:53

@AlwaysinaFlap

when I see these 40 odd year old women in barrel/Mom/baggy style jeans I think WTF.

Quite. Mom jeans are possibly the most horrific style of denim ever. No one, NO ONE looks good in them.

Glitterspy · 20/01/2022 13:02

Me! I love the high rise, slightly wider silhouette and shorter length.

They go really well with boots underneath (longer chunky Chelsea boot style) or with bare ankles/trainers for slightly warmer days.

I have thrown out all my skinnies and couldn’t be happier that the skinny jeans look is over. Goodbye forever, muffin top!

It definitely profits the fashion industry (it is after all a business) for us to have to keep buying new styles of clothes, but I’m not convinced this has come from the fashion industry… it seems to have started from some people on TikTok with the whole skinny Jean/side parted hair = millennials trend. (Which oddly looking at the comments no Gen Z actually cared about it was more the millennials caring. All the Gen Zs were saying ‘you do you girl’ and other such comments…)

I think this because if it was led by the fashion industry then why do some of the fashion houses have skinnies and leggings in their recent collections E.g there’s skinny jeans in Givenchy’s AW2022 collection and I’ve also seen skinnies on practically every retailers website I’ve looked on recently, from Levi’s to H&M to Everlane.

I think we need to realise that, along with the other jeans styles that have resurfaced, they’re here to stay and it’s so much nicer to have more choice in jeans styles these days… and it’s more sustainable, you know there’s people throwing out their skinnies right now only to have to buy them all back in a few seasons…

I've just had a nosy on River Island's website in the New In section - 9 pairs of skinnies on the first 2 pages alone! "New In"

There's other shapes too but still plenty of New arrival skinnies.

So I don't think we need a stampede! Grin

I think people fall into two fashion camps - wear whatever the latest fashion is right now or wear what they believe suits them from the last few years.

I saw a woman in Tesco the other day in unmistakable 80s garb complete with spiky Liza Minelli hair and shoulder pads. She was, maybe, early 60s. Brilliantly made up in 80s make up and fully committed to the jacket & bag. The clothes were authentic original 80s in style - I have no idea where she gets them from! But she looks, I imagine, exactly how she wants to look and it makes me sad that someone from mumsnet who is into "fashion" will look at her and sneer. As if clothes make a tangible difference to being worthy in their eyes.
S'abit shit really.

KurtWilde · 20/01/2022 13:55

You were on the thread earlier saying:
You need to be quite tall and very slim to pull off anything that makes you look bigger than you are imo.
That's a rule right there, although to be fair, you did add 'imo'.
By the way I think it's a perfectly reasonable way to dress - I do it myself sometimes, I just don't get why it's seen as better than following fashion.

It's not a rule it's just my opinion, an observation at best Confused

I'm 5'4" and a curvy size 12. I look great in skinnies. Nothing superior about it, just my personal take on wearing what suits my shape. I've tried the baggy things and I just hated the way they looked on me.

Honestly though there's no right or wrong way is there, we all tend to gravitate towards what appeals to us I think. Some like to move with current trends, some stick to what suits them.

As long as we're not all wandering round naked (the world isn't quite ready for a naked Kurt in the city centre) Grin

thisplaceisweird · 20/01/2022 14:27

I think you're mistaken there @MeredithGreyishblue when you say "I imagine, exactly how she wants to look and it makes me sad that someone from mumsnet who is into "fashion" will look at her and sneer"

I think people who are 'into fashion' would absolutely love committing to a style and rocking it. I personally think that sounds amazing. The initial comment was more the frumpy people in leggings and tunics who have to weigh in on fashion threads and critique new styles because they personally think it looks bad. It / they are just not relevant.

thisplaceisweird · 20/01/2022 14:30

This thread is getting confused.

Dressing for your shape is very important. Some styles are classic and suit people better. Go for it!
The question was "are leather leggings still a thing?" and the answer is not really. However, if it suits you and you like the look then do it, but accept it's not the height of fashion any more. Only you can decide if that's important to you or not.

Floisme · 20/01/2022 14:55

But why is only wearing clothes that make you look thinner any less conformist than following fashion?

Floisme · 20/01/2022 14:56

And yeah I think most people who are into fashion would really admire someone with their own distinctive style.

Lanique · 20/01/2022 16:09

Saw these earlier and really quite tempted.

I do find it hard to get my '00s head around ankle flappy trousers though. They seem to go against everything I deem to be fashionable (and flattering). I'm clearly getting old.

Stiffcondomhat · 20/01/2022 16:21

If they are still in shops then they are still a thing.

The thing about skinny jeans is that they suit so few people. When Kate Moss started wearing them back in 2002 or whenever it was, people were aghast at the prospect of them becoming the dominant jeans shape.

Skinny jeans were in style way before 2002 - I was in an accident in 1989 and I remember the A&E staff stumped at how to get my jeans off me, they cut the jeans off in the end! Then came flares, baggy boyfriend jeans, bootlegs and probably others - then skinnies again! Having tried all these styles and more, skinnies definitely suit me best and I'm going to wear them forever, also I think they suit everyone (as opposed to mom jeans, which TO ME suit precisely no one) 😂

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 17:49

Of course skinnies were in style before 2002, but they spent a loooong time in the fashion wilderness before Kate Moss made them cool again.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 17:49

And as for skinny jeans suiting everyone? Nah. That's like saying lycra catsuits suit everyone.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 20/01/2022 17:55

Well no, because I'm not talking about lycra catsuits! ! All I'm saying is that in my opinion, I've never seen anyone who doesn't look good in skinny jeans. Just my opinion obvs ❤️

Agree, "mom" jeans don't suit anyone, neither do those barrel horrors. Bootcut and flare can suit but need to be picky. Jeans need to fit snug round the bum regardless of body shape, as either slim=no arse and curvy =looking loads bigger.

I wore indigo blue drainpipes (the precursor to skinnies) with platform boots and vest tops in 1994 at uni and remember my flatmate saying I looked like Debra winger in an officer and a gentleman. Skinny jeans will always be my friend.

Covetthee · 20/01/2022 18:08

I think it all depends on your age.

Skinny jeans are definitely not ‘trendy’ amongst late teens/20’s but so many 30+ still wear them and look great.

I would say leather leggings not so much but leather trousers for sure.

You just have to look at all the influencers and 99% of them are still wearing them and atm they mostly decide what’s fashionable.

I mean they have brought back uggs this year as fashionable again when just a few years ago they were deemed ‘chavy’

(I’m sure lots of people will say they never stopped wearing their uggs blah blah.. you might not have but they definitely weren’t a trendy item the last few years)

llanfair11 · 20/01/2022 19:02

Why not leather trousers?

I never said they make me look thinner, I just don't want to look bigger than I actually am because I like my size/shapeConfused
Sickoffamilydrama · 20/01/2022 20:33

I have and always will be into fashion as well as the S&B on here and whilst there is always someone who wants to be cruel I have rarely seen the attitude you describe here:

it makes me sad that someone from mumsnet who is into "fashion" will look at her and sneer. As if clothes make a tangible difference to being worthy in their eyes.

I often think this is all in people's heads that people who like fashion sneer at others most I know don't and anyone who actually does needs to give their head a wobble and get a grip!

Sickoffamilydrama · 20/01/2022 21:03

@llanfair11

Why not leather trousers?
I have my eye on these I haven't had a pair of leather trousers like this since I was a late teen/early twenties so 20 odd years only yesterday. The shape is flattering on me as well so win win!
Are leather leggings still a thing?
IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 20/01/2022 23:08

@Sickoffamilydrama those are lovely trousers! I too had a pair like that 20 odd years not long ago! But now I have my eye on these...

zeddybrek · 20/01/2022 23:49

I love my faux leather skinnies! They make me look slimmer than any other shape or style of trousers. They look great with all my jumpers and tops. I don't care if they are fashionable or not. Although I did notice a lot of the shops had them in stock through AW2021. Go with what you like!
