Are leather leggings still a thing?

Browsing online shopping for things I might wear once I’m back to a pre pregnancy shape if not size.

Are leather look leggings still a thing? I liked them pre baby but I feel like I’ve been in maternity wear forever and now I’m not sure what I even want to wear.

Frumpy people go "well I would rather be OUT OF FASHION because X looks AWFUL"

Frumpy 😂

minniep · 19/01/2022 08:24

I have a Spanx petite fit pair and I absolutely love them. I'd highly recommend them to any shorties like me.

doadeer · 19/01/2022 08:27

I wear them with a jumper. They are practical as lots of shoe options. I find a lot of the newer loose styles harder to match shoes with. Even my baggy jeans only really suit trainers. Much harder to style

middleager · 19/01/2022 08:32

Love mine. They are from New Look. The high, generous waist and skinnier leg suits my shape. I have two pairs. They are so incredibly comfortable.

I care if they are neither in or out. At nearly 50, I will wear what I like regardless of silly rules.

thebabessavedme · 19/01/2022 09:57

Not following 'fashion trends' like a thoughtless lump of woman shaped meat does not = 'frumpy', also, if skinny jeans are so 'out' perhaps someone should tell the buyers of all our high street fashion outlets? plainly these idiots have been getting it wrong for years (or do they buy a selection of shaped jeans/trousers/leggings for women who can think for themselves?)

Delatron · 19/01/2022 10:11

I think most people just want to look good and dress to their shape. My legs are my best feature and my tummy isn’t as flat as it once was. So baggy jeans and a cropped jumper as per current fashion makes me look awful.

Whereas leggings and longer jumper and boots is more flattering.

Flares are flattering but can’t have them dragging along the ground in the rain and the mud so will save them for Spring/summer.

Can’t wait for the fashion to change!

For me I choose the fashion I like/is flattering and leave the rest.

BusterGonad · 19/01/2022 10:22

I really love the look of the new flares, but unfortunately I need to shop somewhere that does leg lengths and where I live I'm not sure where that'll be, except Levis ££££!

@grownup2

I'm currently living in the M&S coated jeggings. I think they're a bit less try-hard than leather, and certainly less sticky to wear (I have experience!). These are somehow indestructible: easy to wash, never baggy, never sweaty, with a very slight sheen. Recommend if you want to try the general look with low investment. And as for ditching skinnies, what's an apple to do when legs are the slim and shapely bit?
I agree with this, I absolutely love mine but I had to size down. The only other thing I would say about them is Man alive, do I feel the cold when I wear them! I was worried I'd feel a bit sweaty given the coating but I absolutely can't wear them if it's very cold as it feels like I'm wearing nothing on my bottom half!

I could have written this post @grownup2. I am a very stubborn little apple and will be taking my skinny jeans and leather look M&S jeggings to the grave with me. Every supposedly cool cut of trousers makes me look like Humpty fucking Dumpty and I’m only a size 12!
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/01/2022 18:22

People who insist that they'll be wearing skinny jeans to their grave might want to stock up whilst they're still in the shops.

LakeShoreD · 19/01/2022 18:25

Leather leggings seem to be the preserve of heavily pregnant women where I live!

But wear what makes you feel good :)

AlwaysinaFlap · 19/01/2022 18:26

I was in a "trendy" restaurant bar the other day and nearly all of the young waitresses were wearing PU ones in some form or another - flares on one and tight leggings on the rest. They're certainly alive and well down here in the SE.

AlwaysinaFlap · 19/01/2022 18:29

@WhiteCatmas

Cropped flared trousers look like pirate wear.
Agree. My DIL wears them 😂
CambsAlways · 19/01/2022 18:33

Well I wear them and I love them ! I can’t stand all that flappy material , I also love my skinnies got them in all colours , I couldn’t actually care less whether in fashion or out

This. I have long slim legs. I wear long slim trousers or I look like. Tramp

This is just one website so I don't think there's any rush...

I don't care if they are in or out, I will never be parted from mine. I love them, they look great on me, I feel good in them, they are staying!

As for the cropped, flared things - just no. They look ridiculous and I'd feel so self conscious wearing them, flapping around above my ankles.

I agree. I'd rather where something I look good/comfortable in than buy a style I don't like and I personally, think looks ridiculous, then be on trend.

Lol. They're not going anywhere anytime soon.
HillofTara · 20/01/2022 09:41

Like lots have said skinnies are out and looser fits are in. I'm at the age where I remember wearing wide bootleg jeans in 90s/00s and suffering with them always soaking up water like a sponge in the rain and always flapping about. That's why I love skinnies! They show off curves so much better and look great with riding boots /Chelsea boots /trainers etc. I find I'm having to come to terms with being at the age now where I'm no longer trendy but have experimented with lots of weird fads to know what does and definitely does not suit my frame!

Floisme · 20/01/2022 11:50

I'm not sure why dressing for your shape is seen as superior to fashion. Either way you're following rules and listening to people telling you what you should or shouldn't wear.

To answer your question op, I don't own a pair so have no skin in the game and I'd say they're no longer A Thing in the way they were a few years ago. So if you're interested in fashion (disclosure: I am) then I wouldn't go spending a lot of money on them at this point. But if you already have some then I think they still look fine, especially if you team them with something current.

KurtWilde · 20/01/2022 11:53

No, I'm looking at myself in the mirror and listening to MYSELF.

You were on the thread earlier saying: You need to be quite tall and very slim to pull off anything that makes you look bigger than you are imo. That's a rule right there, although to be fair, you did add 'imo'. By the way I think it's a perfectly reasonable way to dress - I do it myself sometimes, I just don't get why it's seen as better than following fashion.
MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 11:59

The thing about skinny jeans is that they suit so few people. When Kate Moss started wearing them back in 2002 or whenever it was, people were aghast at the prospect of them becoming the dominant jeans shape. So I'm sceptical when people on these threads insist how good they look in them. They're just used to them.

Winederlust · 20/01/2022 12:17

I don't actually think skinnies are out as such, just that in the 2010s they were pretty much the only jeans that women were wearing. I really like now that there is more choice- jeans actually seem to be not so trend led and people tend to have a variety- I really like having boyfriend jeans after years of skinnies but I do still like my skinnies too and find they go better with certain tops/shoes etc than boyfriend jeans.

100% agree with this. I think it's much more about variety atm rather than what's in and what's out. I follow a fair few 'fashion influencers' on Instagram (granted they're aimed at the 30/40+ demographic) but you'll see them wearing almost all shapes and styles of jeans.

It's funny though, isn't it ? I actually think skinnies flatter quite a lot of people whereas when I see these 40 odd year old women in barrel/Mom/baggy style jeans I think WTF.
