Is this too babyish for 6 year old?

It’s for a present and the recipient is the youngest in year 2 and I’m wondering if she or her friends will think it’s a bit ‘childish’ . I also like a similar one with various vehicles - boats, helicopters, planes on and have the same concern about that too. I’m not sure what 6-8 year olds consider acceptable these days.

Goodness, you can’t have a 6yo looking childish! 🙄

ldontWanna · 17/01/2022 22:24

What is the kid into is the better question.
DD would hate it because of the ducks and pink, but loved a similar style in blue ,with dinosaurs and short sleeves. My friend's DD wouldn't like it because she doesn't wear dresses. Some kids might like the print but not the (ruffley) style or the other way around.

So what does the kid like?

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 22:32

Is it the family’s style? I know some kids who absolutely were wearing stuff like that at 6 and others that definitely weren’t.

Though if it’s for a gift I probably wouldn’t choose a dress but something like a skirt and top or a “special” T-shirt with sequins etc. If you want to get something from Boden, one of their T-shirts with lollipops or similar on is a better bet, or a skort or a twirly skirt or similar.

I agree with a pp about John Lewis being good for that age group - they often have nice tops for 6-8-ish which are fun but a bit more grown-up. Joules too and they have good sales on girls’ stuff and an eBay outlet which is good value.

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 22:34

(And my DD would probably not have liked that dress aged 6 but happily wears other stuff from Boden - their “fun jersey dress” t-shirt dress style is good for age 6 and has a variety of different patterns, some more “young” and some a bit older or more classic. And everyone loves a Boden swimsuit!)

Agathacrustie · 17/01/2022 22:37

It's definitely the family's style and the little girl loves animals but I'm aware that she wants to fit in with the older girls in her class too and I'd worry about her going to a party or own clothes day in it and feeling babyish if that makes sense. I'll have a look at John Lewis. I take the point about going up a size too
Thanks everyone.

My daughter is seven, in year two and would love it 🤷‍♀️

Dancingonmoonlight · 17/01/2022 22:46

I'd probably go for the aeroplane print personally and I think these dresses are great for six year olds. They are so versatile and well made and can be worn over leggings. When DC1 was 7, they were wearing age 5-6 in Boden and when DC2 was 6-7, they were wearing age 7.
MN often had a discount code with 20% off Boden too!

JugglingJanuary · 17/01/2022 22:57

My niece is 6.5 & would love it!

Another niece wouldn't have worn it after 3 unless it had garish unicorns on it!

If it came in 'adult - Fat bastard' I'd wear it!!

Jumpingintomenopause · 17/01/2022 22:58

The JL Anyday range is fantastic value.

Happymum12345 · 17/01/2022 22:59

It’s lovely! My dd would have worn that at 6. Looks comfortable too.

Agathacrustie · 17/01/2022 23:00

JugglingJanuary lol. I often think babygros would be insanely comfortable for adults. I'll check out some of bodens other designs and see what there is.

I find all of Boden, Joules and JL come up large, so don’t buy too many sizes up.

Do check out Joules’ ebay outlet, they have some nice stuff for that age group too, it’s not all to my taste and I normally only buy it at sale prices but they often have some really nice stuff for that age group.

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 23:22

This Kite dress on the Joules website has a similar vibe, but is just that little bit more grown up in shape and design than the Boden duck tunic, for example:

My 6 year old would think it was cute but she wouldn’t want to wear it. Most of the girls in her class want to look cool these days (non uniform school). They grow up too fast.

Agathacrustie · 18/01/2022 18:52

IvorCutler. I think the 6 year old I’m buying for would love it but would feel the same way as your DD about it being seen as uncool by her (older) classmates and not want to wear it for parties etc. It’s really sad.

OP posts:
ParkheadParadise · 18/01/2022 18:56

My 6-year-old wouldn't wear that.

UpDownRound · 18/01/2022 18:58

I'm surprised by all the size up comments. It drives me mad when relatives do that and clothes sit unworn for at least 9 months. She is exactly the 50th percentile for height and weight so totally average.

Agathacrustie · 18/01/2022 19:05

UpDownRound. I agree. It really depends on the brand. Anything I’ve bought from Bode , John Lewis and Next have been very generous and the next size up of their clothes would drown this little girl. She’s very average weight and height for her age too.

Agree, DS would have only gone into a 6 at almost 6 (then he wore his favourite age 6 tshirt until he was almost 11). My DSis was continually bought clothes a size up by a relative and they were too 'young' by the time she grew into them a year or two later.
Benjaminsniddlegrass · 18/01/2022 19:52

Just asked my DD who has just turned 6 and she said no bit too young - she likes these ones!
