Hair colour - what do I need to ask for?

I know absolutely nothing about colouring hair. I also have pretty crappy hair in general - it’s thin yet also really frizzy. It’s the natural texture not particularly due to damage - it’s been this way since my teens.

I currently dye it dark brown myself. I would like to go back to my natural colour which is a couple of shades lighter - a kind of reddy browny chestnut colour. How is this possible when I dye it darker? It must be doable but I can’t see how it’s possible without bleaching the current colour out. I also have quite a lot of greys although these are mainly under the current dye.

What do I ask a hairdresser to do and how can they do it without causing much damage? And do I need it to be all one colour? Or do I need a few colours through it for movement? I have no idea and am really intimidated by hairdressers and hate asking their advice. Whenever I ask it ends up looking bad anyway.

Most hairdressers should have a colour expert stylist
Ask when you ring.
They should discuss it with you at the appointment time and you kind of agree together.
Tell them you are a novice and nervous

You could have highlights in your preferred lighter colour and low lights in your dyed darker colour and gradually go lighter over many months.
