Dying hair when it's been dyed dark

I'm quite inexperience with hair dye. Only ever used L'Oréal hair dye in light brown as a result of lockdown and hairdressers closing. Even though it's a light brown colour on the box, it's medium brown. What can I do to lift my hair a little and make it a bit more honey caramel coloured or an actual light brown? Is this only a job for a hairdresser or can I opt for the next shade up. Since dying myself in May 2020, I haven't wanted to pay for it to be dyed at the hairdressers.

You can’t lift tint with tint, so you need to remove the colour in your hair with a bleach bath or a stripper, and start from scratch. A hairdresser could do “a cleanse” and then go the colour you want.

You could try buying another dye a level higher. So if, for example, the dye you used last time was a level 5 you can try a level 6 which would be a lighter brown.

However if you're looking to go to a higher level, like a level 8, you'd need bleach.

Dye is limited in how much it will change hair colour when trying to go lighter. I've found it will do one level or change the tone eg from cool to warm but more than that bleach is required.
