What will you definitely not be buying in 2022?

Inspired by a minimalist YouTuber, I'm writing a list of things I am not buying in 2022.

 1. I'm not buying anymore one event wonders! Things which only do for the very odd event. I barely go out these days and when I do, it's generally really casual. There is no need for cocktail dresses these days.

 2. no more leggings - I have plenty and, truth be told, they don't really suit me

 3. no more pointed flat shoes. I always buy these thinking they look smart enough for whatever but also are comfy as they are flat. I actually don't love how they look on me and I I find them they comfy. No more

 4. no more dungarees! Keep trying, and keep failing, to suit these. Ditto pinafore dresses

 5. no more tights. I don't wear tights! Why do I have so many? I think it's because tights and a dress used to be my go to outfit, but now don't wear dresses in winter and don't need tights in the summer, so there is no need for a drawer full of tights

 6. mini skirts... I'm too tall and clumsy for these. Always show my arse

 7. no more jewelery, ESPECIALLY statement pieces. I don't wear them

Is anyone else shunning specific items this year? I'm doing low buy anyway, but putting this together to remind myself of specific things to avoid

Can I add herbs to the list? Just went to get some thyme (run out) but have three jars of basil, two of parsley etc. I’ve got into the gp habit of buying a new jar when cooking, instead of checking before going shopping whether I need a new jar. Definitely a policy of buying new when run out, not just in case.

Cocolapew · 09/01/2022 19:12

No more tapered black trousers
No more black jumpers
No more navy jumpers
No more batwing jumpers in any colour
No more jeans, I never wear them
No more perfume until I've used the ones I have up
No more purple shampoo until I've used them up

Can buy
Trainers, but not until the summer unless I find the perfect green pair
Lighter joggers for work after Easter
Make up but only to replace
Wide leg trousers if I find the perfect pair (unlikely)

@AuntieMarys

I'm retired so no need for smart work clothes, thank the Lord. I spend a lot of time walking or at the gym...have just bought Acai walking trousers, Sweaty Betty leggings and new walking boots I have enough smart/ casual going out stuff to see me through the year. We go out 2/3 times a week and haven't worn the same top twice in about 6 months! Have bought 2 new Prima Donna satin bras in the sale and 15 pairs of knickers from M and S. The only thing I will buy is footwear...I'm a narrow 9 so nothing on the high street fits. I order online whenever I see a possibility.
@AuntieMarys Can I ask what the Açai trousers are like? I’ve been considering these for the last year.
MercedesBenz · 09/01/2022 19:18

@Riverlee
Take a pic of ur spice rack and them when your out shopping g you can easily check what you need

I bought a dress which has ‘ plugged a gap ‘ and now means I can get use of my slouchy boots , which I love and bought last lockdown but wasn’t wearing as didn’t have anything to go with them
Dress can be worn year round so will wear with black sandals in the summer

Also bought walking pants as jeans too heavy, and I want to get out more but find ‘ lack of kit ‘ puts me off

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 09/01/2022 19:31

I'm trying to have a year of restraint this year. I don't need anything else, so no clothes, no skincare, no hair products and no makeup up.
I have enough of everything to last at least a year.

I'm healthy eating and exercising so that I can look good in my summer clothes - they were all expensive and I looked lovely in them the last time I went on holiday so I'd like to get back into them and wear them again this year.

My only exceptions are buying pants and candles - I need new everyday pants and I love candles and they make me happy so I will still buy those.

I'm absolutely sick of the spending to excess on crap I don't need - I'm actually embarrassed at my spending habits and I need to stop now.

SocksAndTheCity · 09/01/2022 19:33

No more perfume is a good shout @Cocolapew. I wear it most days but I still have at least seven or eight bottles open and that didn't stop me buying (and opening) another one in the Black Friday sale Blush.

I'll allow exceptions for a couple of favourites that have been discontinued on the off chance one pops up, but otherwise I'm making do with what I have - I'm lucky to have so many nice things in the first place.

Enzbear · 09/01/2022 19:37

No work clothes, hopefully the ones I have will last me until retirement.
No jackets or coats have far too many even though I do wear them all.
No summer clothes, I bought a few dresses, skirts and sandals last year when the shops opened up.
I really can't think of anything I really want until Autumn when I will buy a couple of new jumpers and a new pair of boots.
Possibly new underwear as I get rid as soon as it gets tatty.

NeedWineNow · 10/01/2022 09:04

On the basis I am retiring this year and won't have anything like the usual disposable income that I have had, I am going for a little or no spend going forward. I really don't need any clothes, makeup, skincare or accessories - I could seriously use a different handbag every day for a month and still have plenty left over. It's frightening to think how much I have spent over the years.

I am allowing underwear and things that will need to be replaced - I'm going to need new ballet shoes for class and some new Zumba trainers for instance - but as for the rest, nah.

Wizzbangfizz · 10/01/2022 09:41

I'm buying nothing until I can lose the weight to shop my own wardrobe or barely worn clothes it is ridiculous what I have never or barely worn.

The thing I do need is knickers, decent high quality black white and nude full breifs - not glamorous but very necessary - any shaping benefits would also be a bonus

Gonnagetgoing · 10/01/2022 11:12
@greatape
Definitely recommend upgrading jewellery. I used money saved in Lockdown to buy a diamond ring and earrings (Monica Vinader so not £££ but quite a lot more than I'd usually spend) and a Tiffany necklace (one of their cheapest). Absolutely love them and wear them every day.
@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - good shout about Monica Vinader diamond earrings. I had a slight panic over Christmas when I thought I'd lost a lovely Tiffany diamond stud! Her diamond earrings are so pretty for everyday!

Agreed re Tiffany - a few years back I bought a lovely hearts lariat necklace which when I wear out (found it in it's bag hidden away) I really liked for the style for every day.

greatape · 10/01/2022 12:04

@Gonnagetgoing, @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, I'd quite like to up my second hand/antique jewellery game as well. I like gold and would prefer to avoid played stuff (dh got me an Alex monroe plated ring one year that tarnished/worn off really quickly).

My issue is knowing where to look - I am not one for a pootle around antique centres (DH certainly isn't) and not sure where to look online that isn't eBay. So if anyone can recommend any online auction houses/second hand placed I'd be thrilled!

SocksAndTheCity · 10/01/2022 13:27

@TheChosenTwo

Dammit! They just know how to hook us beauty junkies in Grin Well done for staying strong *@JeSuis* Grin And let me know what’s in it *@SocksAndTheCity* - mine was really good a few months back, it was a Fresh mini lip scrub stick, a mini oribe hair oil and something else that I can’t remember but I was happy with it when it came!
I have a 15ml Ren Perfect Canvas cleanser which can go in my gym bag, a 5ml of CC red correct cream (I don't need it but somebody will like it) and a 5ml of Sunday Riley Good Genes which I've wanted to try, so not bad! I also have a card for a free makeup or skincare consultation in one of the stores.

Most importantly, having something come through the door has killed off the urge to buy more stuff, at least for now Grin

What will you definitely not be buying in 2022?
UniBallEye · 10/01/2022 14:42

good thread!
I am not allowing myself to buy anymore nice clothes until I lose the 1.5stones preventing me from fitting into 50% of my wardrobe.

I am on a get fit plan now and doing really well so I am allowing myself to buy good waterproofs and walking boots and am on the hunt for them too.

The other thing I really need is decent exercise stuff - leggings / fleeces / long sleeved tees etc I have very very little and it's a real gap in my wardrobe.

I have actually never focused on buying stuff like this before!

5128gap · 10/01/2022 15:16

Nothing recommended as a wardrobe 'essential' for women my age. This will include: A white shirt, a well fitting blazer, a pair of slim fitting indigo jeans, a cashmere sweater, a knee length pencil skirt, a camel coat, a trench coat, a 'good' pair of leather brogues, a pair of black mid heeled 'pumps' and a timeless black dress that will take me from office to date night with the addition of a statement necklace.
I fully intend to add to my existing motley collection of garments with whatever tasteless and inpractical article next catches my eye.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 10/01/2022 17:34

No more boots, I own a pair of boots in every imaginable colour yet still wear the same old black Chelsea boots all the time, in fact half of them are going to the charity shop tomorrow, somebody will love a pair of rose gold or blue leopard skin pair of ankle boots ( no I dont know what I was thinking either🤣)

desperatehousewife21 · 10/01/2022 18:53

No more pyjamas, jeans or band T shirts. I’m ridiculous for buying these ALL THE TIME. Find a new band I like and think, I actually need to buy their T shirt Grin

I reckon I’ll fail on the T shirt one tho.

TheChosenTwo · 11/01/2022 10:45

Lovely @SocksAndTheCity - that’s my favourite cleanser, always have one on the go and a backup! That’s a great little birthday bundle, thanks for sharing Smile

MsAnnFrope · 11/01/2022 10:57

@greatape are you me?
I’m not even setting foot in a charity shop this year because I buy so much which is almost right, or as you said for a lifestyle I don’t have!
I need to lose a stone (at least) and then the other half of my wardrobe will become available to me so I’m aiming for not buying any clothes or shoes.
Also taking better care of the shoes I have. DD is definitely picking up my slovenly maintenance habits - DSD even offered to clean my hiking boots which was embarrassing if very sweet.
Make up only as I need it - no more experimental colour palettes! I’ve got my Christmas Lancôme haul to see me through for a bit - cheers mum
No strange face stuff from Superdrug thinking it will be a miracle worker. No! Drink more water and actual cleanse and moisturise.

PrimalLass · 11/01/2022 22:56

Nothing from cheap places like supermarkets. I always end up sending it to the charity shops. I would like a pair of SB leggings and that's it.

No more new clothes or shoes unless they are essential replacements for something that l have genuinely worn out or damaged the wash!

No more buying flashy new cars after being sweet talked by salesmen during my annual service whilst l wait, the one l have now is perfectly fine, still low mileage for its age, and fairly cheap to insure for my adult Daughters to drive when needed to!
It’s also a damn good car, well made, and could never be replaced like for like, a fairly rare model that is no longer made, hence the sales man would love it as a trade in for himself!
Same salesman kept my little old Yaris for his wife to do the school runs in, it never made it onto the sales forecourt!

Sell things that l saved ‘for a rainy day ’from my Dads place when l cleared out his home a couple of years ago, it all needs to go to the local Auction house where it can be sold, or given away to the local charity shops.

Never be surprised at how life can quickly change, within a year, l have battled Cancer, lost my eyesight in one eye, overcome Claustrophobia
thanks to MRI monitors and having to, and about to welcome another Grandchild, after an eight year gap, a baby boy after three girls for our DD and her DH!

I Lost 5 Stones in weight whist being tube fed, coped with Radiotherapy side effects and Burns, and been truly grateful that l had a basic medical knowledge myself, having done my Nurse training on leaving school, and a very medically minded family. At times due to the pressure the Ward staff were under with the COVID situation, self care became a very important part of daily routine, or risk getting missed of your Charge Nurses list, and going without what was due to you!

Appalonia · 14/01/2022 20:50

No more buying clothes on Ebay! I'm a busty 14/16 and I just can't know if something will fit me unless I've tried it on. So, I've got 2 leather jackets from Ebay, one is too small, one is too big, 3 dresses that don't fit me, and numerous trousers, tops and shoes. I should probably just try to sell them on Vinted really. I really wish there was an option to return Ebay clothes if they don't fit you, but there isn't from private sellers.

lindyloo57 · 14/01/2022 21:23

I agree, ebay is ok for clothing brands you know will fit, I'm trying to resell a new with tags size 10 coat from m&s, a wallis new with tags kimono, and a few other things, I'm definitely not buying any more clothes from ebay, I will just add I have had a few great items as well.

satchatchat · 15/01/2022 08:19

I'm not buying anymore "bargain" clothes that aren't good quality or don't fit properly. I'd rather spend a little more and buy good quality things occasionally.

declutteringmymind · 15/01/2022 08:33

@satchatchat hear hear!

Although I do but cheap clothes for work which I refresh every year or so. I have 2 light dresses to wear which I alternate. I change into scrubs as soon as I get to work and my clothes get put everywhere.
