What will you definitely not be buying in 2022?

Inspired by a minimalist YouTuber, I'm writing a list of things I am not buying in 2022.

  1. I'm not buying anymore one event wonders! Things which only do for the very odd event. I barely go out these days and when I do, it's generally really casual. There is no need for cocktail dresses these days.

  2. no more leggings - I have plenty and, truth be told, they don't really suit me

  3. no more pointed flat shoes. I always buy these thinking they look smart enough for whatever but also are comfy as they are flat. I actually don't love how they look on me and I I find them they comfy. No more

  4. no more dungarees! Keep trying, and keep failing, to suit these. Ditto pinafore dresses

  5. no more tights. I don't wear tights! Why do I have so many? I think it's because tights and a dress used to be my go to outfit, but now don't wear dresses in winter and don't need tights in the summer, so there is no need for a drawer full of tights

  6. mini skirts... I'm too tall and clumsy for these. Always show my arse

  7. no more jewelery, ESPECIALLY statement pieces. I don't wear them

Is anyone else shunning specific items this year? I'm doing low buy anyway, but putting this together to remind myself of specific things to avoid

No more makeup till I have used what I have, was supposed to start in January but caved in when I saw hourglass ambient lighting palette half price at £39.50, if this is the only makeup I buy for this year I will be happy. No more cheap throw away fashion.

MercedesBenz · 08/01/2022 21:43

No toiletries unless I run out , which is highly unlikely

No socks , knickers , sweatshirts

A strict buy only what I need , where there is a ‘gap ‘ , today I bought a carefully considered black jumper , and the bright pink one , I put back ! Yes , I was in an actual shop

Had a small clear out a
, which is ongoing

No more books til I’ve read what’s already on my kindle

applesandpears33 · 08/01/2022 21:52

I'm going for low buy. I'm returning to the office in Spring and will need to buy new clothes for that. Otherwise, I'll replace underwear and sports wear as required. I do not need coats, jackets, boots or cardigans even though I love buying them. I also do not need to buy eye cream, hand cream or night cream although I will probably need to buy moisturiser and body lotion at some point as I do use them up.

TheChosenTwo · 08/01/2022 22:05

Oversized shirt dresses. I’m already oversized as a person, wearing these make me look like I’ve gone out wearing my bedsheets. So why did I buy 3 last year? Confused
No skincare or makeup unless it’s something I’ve run out of and don’t have any others to use up. I can’t see that I’m going to need to buy anything all year however I have a weakness for a cult beauty or space no gift with purchase offer Blush

Ohmycron · 08/01/2022 22:10

Clompy boots

JeSuis · 08/01/2022 22:42

@TheChosenTwo, Cult Beauty almost got me with a 15% off "your next haul" offer if I downloaded the app. I unsubscribed from their emails instead Halo

So easy to fall for it though!

I forgot I ordered some hair conditioner from Space NK just to get a birthday GWP with a code they sent me! That was yesterday, so I don't know what's in it yet.

Definitely no more after that.

TheChosenTwo · 08/01/2022 23:38

Dammit! They just know how to hook us beauty junkies in Grin
Well done for staying strong @JeSuis Grin
And let me know what’s in it @SocksAndTheCity - mine was really good a few months back, it was a Fresh mini lip scrub stick, a mini oribe hair oil and something else that I can’t remember but I was happy with it when it came!

Normski67 · 09/01/2022 01:44

No more shoes, boots or sandals. I have absolutely loads that could last me years. The only think I will buy for my feet this year are running trainers because my existing ones are almost worn out.
Also no more make up unless it’s something that has run out.
No more perfumes - I have about 20.
Operate on a one out one in policy on tshirts and jumpers as I don’t really need loads of stuff as I’m still WFH.

WinchGirl · 09/01/2022 07:12

I am definitely going to dramatically cut down my spending on this year's clothing, think I will make it my NY resolution (guaranteed to fail then- Ha!)
In particular...
No more knickers - This will difficult, as I can never resist a pretty pair of Knicks
No more tights - I already have a large drawer full (Some in unopened packets from months, maybe years ago) ,
No more shoes - I have enough for all scenarios
No more bras
No more 'just looking' or browsing online without having a particular purchase in mind
No more clicking on links in S&B which inevitably ends up with me buying something I hadn't even considered

JustJam4Tea · 09/01/2022 07:25

No buy this year, except pants. I have so many clothes, and I only wear a really small rotation of them, and I need to lose a stone.

GoodnightGrandma · 09/01/2022 07:29

I’m the opposite and a actually need to buy an outfit as I’ve nothing to go to a funeral/life celebration in. All I own is leggings and tunic tops.
I honestly don’t know what to buy anymore.

AuntieMarys · 09/01/2022 07:45

I'm retired so no need for smart work clothes, thank the Lord.
I spend a lot of time walking or at the gym...have just bought Acai walking trousers, Sweaty Betty leggings and new walking boots
I have enough smart/
casual going out stuff to see me through the year. We go out 2/3 times a week and haven't worn the same top twice in about 6 months!
Have bought 2 new Prima Donna satin bras in the sale and 15 pairs of knickers from M and S.
The only thing I will buy is footwear...I'm a narrow 9 so nothing on the high street fits. I order online whenever I see a possibility.

Tinitiny · 09/01/2022 07:47

No more toiletries unless I run out - I put away the Christmas gifts and there is enough there to service a small country.
I do need to streamline what we use products-wise too - DD is super curly though so that’s making things a bit difficult as she has lots of stuff no-one else uses.

No more scarves/pashminas. Have tons.
I need knickers (having sorted and thrown lots out that lost their elastic) and flats - mine fell apart on school run on Friday.

1positivity · 09/01/2022 07:50

Great thread and I can't think of anything that I DO actually need to buy this year. I have plenty enough of everything after being sucked into consumerism and only very recently realising this. Slowly trying to change habits. My problem is if I'm bored and can usually afford it, I'll just pay pop to the shops, the high street, the out of town retail park etc and mindlessly buy stuff.

I know what I need to stop buying, I just don't know HOW?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2022 07:52

No more:
Nightwear - I've got 5 nighties, only 3 of which I tend to wear / 3 pairs of PJ bottoms which I pretty much never wear because they need ironing

Socks

Bras

Work shoes

Work clothes

Makeup, other than replacing foundation or mascara when they've run out

Sample size stuff for taking on trips - got a box full

Can buy:
Trainers, if I find the perfect pair
White trainers to replace old ones
Boots to replace a pair that have sprung a leak, but only if I can find perfect ones
A black cotton summer dress

greatape · 09/01/2022 09:21

No more:

things which are almost right
Things which are cheap/in sales
Things for a lifestyle I don't have
Knee jerk purchase - no need to buy everything in one big shop
Cheap jewellery. I have a lot of low quality stuff so want to do a bit of replacing with better stuff.

I do want to invest in a few bits:
Decent coats - i have a knee jerk reaction to spending money on things so am shocking for that whole buy cheap buy twice thing

Good knitwear - a huge challenge for me as I have very sensitive skin so can't wear much including cashmere. I stalk cotton stuff then tend to grab whatever I see regardless of if it suits me or no

Basically spend my budget wisely.

AutumnAlmanack · 09/01/2022 09:29

No more 'experimental' jeans - I have about 10 unworn pairs in my wardrobe, none of which suit me!
No more fancy blouses for 'best' - I never wear them.
No more linen anything - a real pain to wash and iron after every wear, and it still looks scruffy!
No more Beauty Advent Calendars - bought the Bobbi Brown one this year (over £100) and it was absolute rubbish!

Riverlee · 09/01/2022 09:33

No more clothes
No more make-up,
No more moisturiser,

Plan to only buy when they have run out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2022 09:35

@greatape
Definitely recommend upgrading jewellery. I used money saved in Lockdown to buy a diamond ring and earrings (Monica Vinader so not £££ but quite a lot more than I'd usually spend) and a Tiffany necklace (one of their cheapest). Absolutely love them and wear them every day.

declutteringmymind · 09/01/2022 09:40

This is definitely the year of using things up net output.
I have got to the stage where I only need to replace things when they need to be replaced if at all.

I'm also reducing the volume of things so a worn holey tracksuit has gone in the bin but won't be replaced as I have 2 others. When one of those gets tatty, I'll buy a new one.

I'm so going to use this year to understand how long things last so don't keep stocking up on things I think have a high turnover eg bras.

I haven't got any big events this year so it's all possible.

My money this year is probably going on redoing the bedroom and landing, and the garden.

LovelyLupins · 09/01/2022 09:40

No more winter clothes.
No more makeup unless it’s a replacement item.
No more earrings, I don’t wear them since the pandemic started, and no more gold vermeille (just call it plated) jewellery, because it just wears off against my skin and looks awful.

Pinktruffle · 09/01/2022 10:15

I need some clothes I have a new job which is permanently working from home so I will need warm, comfy clothes, however, no fast fashion. I want to give that up forever not just for 2022. Hopefully my budget allows that.

No make up or body care unless it's to replace something.

No shampoo/conditioner. I got lots of fancy ones for Christmas and need to use them all up

Bunce1 · 09/01/2022 11:21

No more clothes only replace what’s knackered and in need of replacing.

I do have rules when I do buy now-
*Must be from a sustainable ethical source. That usually means a bit more expensive so that makes me really think “do I NEED this”
*One in 2 out. So charity donations, passing on or selling. I do have some ££ in my PayPal from selling on some things.
*What I don’t spend on clothes goes into the holiday fund
*48 hour rule. If I still think I NEED it (not want!) after 48 and it fits with the other rules then I can buy

Last year I didn’t buy anything new for 4 months straight. This was immense for me.

JeSuis · 09/01/2022 17:28

Love the one in two out rule if you do buy anything.

The only things I'm considering buying are underwear. I do get mine from an ethical, UK based company anyway (Molke). I will definitely try not to, but I am low on pants after recycling quite a few old M&S ones recently.
