Let’s create a timeless wardrobe

I would love to create a classic, timeless collection of clothing and looking for ideas. Less stuff, but better quality, can be worn again and again etc. My budget probably won’t stretch to most things, but if we share ideas, maybe there will be lower budget alternatives to copy ideas….

Thought it might be fun to create a classic wardrobe together. I will start, Max Mara coat: Coat (way out of my budget 😆😆)

I'd definitely have blue jeans in mine, as I wear them a lot! I have cheap taste in jeans, so would go with Gap or M&S

Also trainers of some kind, but they do tend to be trendy...maybe white leather trainers would be considered classic

JeSuis · 07/01/2022 19:27

Oh and an oversized shirt

whatnumber · 07/01/2022 19:29

I love that coat and have a cheaper black version but am happy I have item 1 already Grin!

A neat fitting cashmere jumper in black or your basic colour.

A thicker jumper in a natural sheep colour

Cashmere jumper maisoncashmere.co.uk/ladies-funnel-neck-jumper-pure-cashmere-links-stitch £90 so reasonably cheap

Love these suggestions, yes a crisp white shirt and denims!

Thinking sumptuous silk pyjamas too (not at all suited to my lifestyle) but wow every night!

Yes, an oversized white shirt.

Can you link if you've found any decent ones.

ThreeB · 07/01/2022 20:40

If you don't mind second hand, there's often Max mara coats on eBay. The one you like has a few listings 😀

Little black dress.

NewPage · 07/01/2022 20:49

I don’t mind second hand at all, in fact I think at least 50% of what I own is! Please do share links.

I haven’t yet found ‘the’ white shirt. The ones I’ve had have always not fit properly or gone greyish! I was wandering whether a gents casual smart shirt, in a boyfriend style might be an option?

A denim jacket

BigotSpigot · 07/01/2022 20:55

I don't think it's possible to have a truly timeless wardrobe but well fitting, simple items in substantial and mostly natural fabrics like wool (cashmere or sometimes better merino), silk, cotton in grey/navy/white/cream/black won't date as much. If you go on the Matches website (www.matchesfashion.com) and look at some of the labels like Raey and The Row, maybe Lemaire, you can recreate those styles if you look carefully on the high street e.g. the premium collection at H&M, U at Uniqlo, Arket, some items in Zara etc.

Thank you for all the tips and shop suggestions/links, love it!

I love to mix new with vintage/thrift shop finds. This is a good online one thrift.plus/
I love M&S wife leg trousers with a colorful shirt for evenings or a cashmere jumper or tank and skinny cardigan for days www.marksandspencer.com/ie/crepe-wide-leg-trousers/p/clp60530236?color=PLATINUM&prevPage=srp#intid=prodColourId-60527890
I invest in good boots and shoes. www.mytheresa.com/euro_en/isabel-marant-dicker-suede-ankle-boots-692228.html - mine are going into their seventh winter!
I have a couple of Boden long dresses for winter.

beneaththeradar · 16/01/2022 20:10

Cashmere jumpers, in all shapes and sizes (to be worn depending on what you're doing - v neck, polo neck - cover all bases).

Cashmere coat/s. Work out what shape/style works for you. I have to have single breasted as I'm tiny and am swamped by anything double breasted. Mid and long length work on me. Blazer type things look rubbish on me because I'm too short to carry them off.

Cashmere scarves in various colours.

Silk shirts.

Wool skirts.

Knitted dresses (cashmere, merino).

I hate jeans so don't buy them. Ditto any kind of trainers, clumpy boots, denim anything etc. None of these suits me.

I buy most of these on Ebay, or when they're massively reduced in end of season sales, as I don't care if they are 'last season' (or, indeed, ten seasons ago).

whirlycarly · 16/01/2022 20:51

The place to go for this is white company right now. 60% off and I could have rebuilt my wardrobe from scratch, they had so much in. It's all beautiful quality, neutral basics.

Have bought a few cashmere pieces and a lovely coat.

rachelforgets · 17/01/2022 20:03

I try to keep to a certain colour pallett. Main colours are black, white beige. I give it some vavavoom with perhaps a red belt or shoes or both bag etc. I do have blue jeans too. recently bought a fitted fushia pink waistcoat, which I love and get nice comments.
