Cutting Own Hair

Hello All, I am just looking for some tips on cutting my own hair. It has got quite long and looks straggly and I have seen lots of people cutting their own hair and want to give it a try (even if it's just for a tidy up). Any help would be appreciated 😃

I did this a couple of weeks ago:

It was stupidly easy, took less than a minute. I'm utterly clueless when it comes to this stuff, but my hair was past my waist due to covid and I was sick of it, so I just watched one video and lopped it off, on the basis that I don't really go out so it didn't matter if I destroyed it.

It worked really well. Looks like a proper professional cut. There's nothing complex about the result, but it's a perfectly reasonable looking shape and doesn't scream 'I did this at home!'. I'd happily do it again.

Oh, and I didn't have hair scissors, I used standard kitchen scissors.

Thank you! I've watched so many videos and tutorials but you never know if it's really as easy as they look 😊

I use the pony tail method. Hair up in a high pony then snip at the length you want. Gives layers and an even cut.
Then if I want to thin it out… two ponys low down- twist then do a couple of snips. 🙂

I cut mine on Christmas Eve. I think this is called the under chin method. It’s recommended to only cut small amounts off at a time…

I just looked on YT for a video I liked the look of.

I’ll fess up straight away that it’s now shorter than originally planned, because I was rushing before bedtime story time but as I’ve had a pixie cut in the past it’s not the shortest it’s ever been, and I can still put it in a little ponytail.
I don’t mind posting a pic if you’re ok with seeing my haggard lack of sleep face and air dried curly hair.

I basically followed this Method:

  1. Center part hair and separate it at the back as if you are going to put hair in very low bunches BUT bring the two sections around to under your chin.

  2. pop hair bobble on so the two sections make a pony tail under your chin.
If you have the bobble touching your chin you’re going to get chin length hair.

  3. for the first go I’d keep the bobble towards the end of your ‘ponytail’, like an inch or something. always cut from underneath the bobble.

  4. repeat steps 1-3 until you have a length you like.
