No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

@OldLadyInPolyester I've had to unfollow so many as I keep getting tempted. Not even by specific clothes just the general feeling of my clothes being out of date or unflattering. Make up is my no.1 vice though. I decluttered my lipsticks over these last two years of mask wearing and am determined to keep it under control.

GranolaHolmes · 26/02/2022 19:58

I'm feeling quite pleased with myself that I haven't made a clothing purchase in February.

I've been tracking which clothes I am wearing using styleapp and interested to find I am wearing around 35 items on rotation since Christmas. Most of which never actually make it into the completely full wardrobe and are just washed, dried and worn on repeat.

At this rate most of my wardrobe will be getting sold on if not worn by the end of the year.

Stylebook not styleapp.

Late to the thread , I remember reading this in Jan but then forgot to comment , however ,,,, drum roll .. I have tried to stick to the principles

So I have bought a black jumper , which I do regret as it’s a bit too short and I haven’t worn as much as I’d hoped

A dress in sale which I will wear all year

Socks from fatface , I was desperate for new ones , do I have to count socks ??? Please say no

And a sweatshirt that I looovre , but bought from last yrs bday money so ‘ technically’ last yrs money

Oh and a toner , but that was a replacement

Trying to buy less , buy better , to buy only things that plug a gap

In the plus side I haven’t bought any makeup / body lotions ( my nemesis) so fat I have bought 2 of my allowed 22

MercedesBenz · 26/02/2022 20:48

So far

( but also fat )

GranolaHolmes · 26/02/2022 21:01

@MercedesBenz 😆 welcome. I'm not counting socks, undies or pyjamas as these things just need replacing when they need replacing and aren't really wardrobe in my book.

Watching vloggers with so many clothes puts me off buying more. I think if you have so many clothes it's overwhelming... especially if you have no storage to see what you have, that's just my opinion though.
I'm trying to shop my wardrobe and dust off those unworn items!

MercedesBenz · 26/02/2022 21:10

@GranolaHolmes
Thank you re the socks

But pyjamas have to be on my list as I have so many pairs already that I don’t need more , although I love them I am staying away from cyber jammies . Maybe as a treat for Christmas 2022 😂

LunaTheCat · 26/02/2022 21:12

I am doing 22 in 22. I haven’t included knickers, bras and socks - but now have enough. In Jan /Feb have bought 4 things.

  • a dress which is very versatile and will be worn all 4 seasons
-an oversized heavy and slouchy cardi in a neutral colour which will wear 3 seasons
  • another dress which was on sale, cannot be returned which I regret!
-a summer dress which I have worn constantly and is in beautiful Madras cotton check ( we are in Southern Hemisphere) As you can see I am a dress person😉 The message for me is that carefully considered good quality is best and try avoid impulse purchases in sales. For our upcoming winter I want a pair Blundstone boots.
GranolaHolmes · 26/02/2022 21:26

@MercedesBenz yes I should have said these are fine in my book unless you have a sock/pyjama habit in which case stop!

@LunaTheCat I love my blundstones, I've never had such a versatile pair of boots. I do have a second pair in my wish list for 2022 but only because I want a different colour option. But I'm not sure I can justify that. I will decide next winter. I don't really need them I know this.

I'm trying to do "no 'new' 2022" eg buying clothes secondhand (apart from pants and socks!). Let's see how I get on!

VerityPJohnson · 27/02/2022 11:00

I'm finding it hard but always do at the change of seasons. It's like I need an update but don't know exactly what and it all gets quite dangerous. I have visions of buying that key piece that is going to transform my wardrobe.

I've bought three new things so far, all in person which I think might have to be my approach. I am sick of the post office.

OldLadyInPolyester · 01/03/2022 13:13

I had a Vinted splurge and bought a couple of jumpers and some jeans. All are fine but don't do me any massive favours so I feel a bit deflated.

GranolaHolmes · 01/03/2022 19:15

I scratched an itch by buying a sweater for son who really does need more clothes.

How's everyone doing?

I'm finding I'm working long hours and don't have time to do any online browsing or using Pinterest you tube etc so the triggers for me deciding I absolutely must have something are quietened.

I bought three long sleeved jersey tops and a pair of harem style jersey trousers. I’m going to Australia at the end of April and they will be great for travelling in. The trousers replace some old harem style trousers I had to chuck last year and the tops were because they will just generally be useful as can be layered easily.

Im gradually decluttering too so find that useful in not being tempted.

ShangPie · 11/03/2022 23:05

I’ve not bought anything new so far this year, but have been a bit gung-ho on Vinted and my local charity shops.

In general, I find having a mental list (wool polo neck in x colour, cord mini, etc) helps me to avoid mistakes, but I have definitely picked up a few things off-list that were too good to leave (LK Bennett tall boots for £5, I’m looking at you)

Favourite items are the mustard hoodie and cord miniskirt (not worn together!) that add a bright spring burst of colour to my otherwise dull autumnal wardrobe, and some red nike hi-top trainers that make everything look more funky and fresh. Definitely enjoying the impact of a few bright bits to liven everything up.

dayslikethese1 · 11/03/2022 23:13

I'm trying to buy second hand only apart from t-shirts, underwear and pyjamas which I replace new as needed. I track everything I wear on an app and am trying to wear everything I own and style it in different ways. I find inspiration watching 'Shop my closet' or 'recreate Pinterest looks' type videos on YouTube. Basically any trend or aesthetic, you probably already have elements of it in your existing wardrobe and it just takes a bit of creativity to create new looks. So far this year I have bought pyjamas, 2 t-shirts and knickers new and then for the second hand items 2 jumpers, a handbag, a necklace, a dress, biker boots (to replace my broken ones) and some jeans. Should really stop now but I'm always finding stuff on Depop Blush

Shiningpath · 19/03/2022 11:36

I have a weird thing where if I’m not shopping I like to feel like I’m using this up so the trigger for me to buy more is, oddly, still having perfectly serviceable clothes. Should my cardigan look like an old rag though, I feel like I’m doing so much better. I need to work on that really badly.

GranolaHolmes · 19/03/2022 18:48

I'm not sure I get it. Sounds an interesting trigger. So wearing your best stuff and looking your best makes you want to shop more rather than feeling satisfied that you already have good stuff?

OP posts:
Shiningpath · 19/03/2022 23:11

No, nothing to do with looking my best. The feeling that things are wearing out is a sort of visual prompt that makes me feel like I’m being economical which is a positive feeling.

LunaTheCat · 20/03/2022 09:37

GranolaHolmes my Blundstone have arrived and I am in love! So comfy - wore them all day Day 1 and no issues.

VerityPJohnson · 20/03/2022 10:34

@GranolaHolmes I think that’s actually summed my trigger up. Got lots of lovely things and when I put together a nice outfit I start thinking what else can I buy to make sure I keep this feeling going.

I’m trying to stick to only buying things if I see them in the flesh. I make so many online mistakes and although it’s tedious to organise returns and terrible for the environment, they are all free (I use PayPal who cover 12 free returns a year if the retailer doesn’t offer it} so feels in that sense risk free.

Problem is I live in London and have loads of free time…

I’m finding spring difficult - all my footwear starts to look wrong or tired. So on the hunt there. Fortunately the shops are full of pastels and neon which don’t suit me.

Definitely bought way more than I should this year already. The value is not huge but that’s not the point.

  • Some much needed workout gear which I don’t count and has been worn a lot
  • An orange cardigan - already have over twenty cardigans
  • A mock neck top - this is at least something different
  • A slightly elevated hoodie - on sale and have worn this more than I expected
  • A wax look jacket - in the sale, half price and have been wearing this quite a bit
  • Two lightweight scarves, one I’ve worn loads, the other got a bit ripped in my zip :(
  • Oliver Bonas necklace - not getting the wear out of this I thought I would
  • Some bootcut/flared jeans from H&M - quite thin but great fit (after shortening that cost almost as much as the jeans) so will be worn as weather warms up

Then there’s the second hand eBay purchases, mostly unsuccessful due to fit or colour not being accurate, but a couple of tops work.

And the things which went back. It’s soooo hard.

GranolaHolmes · 20/03/2022 16:07

@LunaTheCat congratulations! My only annoyance with mine is that they feel indestructible and I can't justify buying another pair just for a new colour.

@VerityPJohnson I think the most likely time for me to overspend is just after a successful purchase. As in "this is lovely, I should get another in a different colour immediately".

I'm miraculously still at only 1 purchase for 2022. This is unheard of.

I did order some things last weekend but they are all going back for not quite hitting the spot.

I’ve been a bit rubbish really. But I don’t think I’ve bought as much as I normally do!

I bought a coat the other day. Am in Dublin for a week. Was in M&S. saw a nice grey coat. I know it’s not really coat buying time! But. It was €110 originally. Reduced to €17 in the sale! €17!!!!
