Snow boots which ones?

I’m going to Scotland soon which has snow but I’d also like a decent pair of boots which don’t let me down on ice/snow. Currently use wellingtons and have some Ugg high with a good tread but a bit old.

What else is good? I quite like Sorel designs but are they good?

I just used hunter snow boots in Lapland, they were great!
Tested to -22 and my feet never felt cold.

@Hawaiiinthemorning - interesting. Which style? Had heard they were more trendy now than practical.

Where I live is steep hills too so just would like decent boots for hills when I’m out walking!

I've got some Mammals with a flip out ice/snow grips. They are pretty good. Are you traveling soon? Just wondering as there's isn't much snow at all in Scotland at the moment, even in the ski resorts.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 29/12/2021 11:07

I use Solomon waterproof walking boots with waterproof gaiters over them for snowy conditions, works really well for decent grip.

WaltzingBetty · 29/12/2021 12:46

Sorrels are excellent and v comfy

lomoloko · 29/12/2021 12:50

Sorel are great. Very warm, last well, grippy.

StiltonIsLife · 29/12/2021 12:55

Sorels. Make sure there is some grip and weather-proof. Uggs are useless in my opinion (unless indoors keeping your feet warm)

Snow in Scotland? Where?

Snow in Scotland? Where?
@nosyboot - supposed to be off to Cairngorms in January, they said it would snow! Not end of the world if it doesn’t.

@Intheopinionofourexpert - no it’s third week of January I’m off there.

I just assumed Scotland was snowy this time of year!

We’ve had light snow - had a white Christmas in East Cairngorms, but it’s only lying high up at the minute, but you are right to be prepared.

My Scarpa walking boots are great in snow, it they are not trendy at all.
I add yaktrax if it’s heavy snow, but again , not especially pretty.

I brought these for Norway, but I haven't been yet!

Sorels. With removable and washable felt inner boots. I have some that are 7 years old and still going strong.

BillyAndTheSillies · 29/12/2021 23:10

Another thumbs up for Sorel. I have the Ainsley and they were fab in Iceland and stylish enough to wear just walking around in winter with jeans.

TheBugHouse · 29/12/2021 23:14

Decathlon snow boots are the bees knees!

Constance1 · 29/12/2021 23:29

I have these hunter ones they are so warm! I had a pair of Sorel ones last year and although they were warm they were so uncomfortable - I don't have particularly wide feet but they were painful.

TigerSeahorse · 29/12/2021 23:33

I got some helly Hansen suede looking ones. They are attractive and very warm, comfy and waterproof.

LadyMaid · 30/12/2021 00:32

I grew up in Scotland and I would always buy my winter boots from Kurt Geiger.
They are made really well and last for years.
One pair lasted 10 years plus and was worn most days whilst we had rain or snow.

Just make sure you have a good amount of grip on the bottom.

What???

I have a pair of caribou style sorrels when I go to ski resorts and had them years. I was advised at the time to get a 1/2 size smaller, so they are snug when buying- because the lining will shink after wearing. They were pricey though at the time, so not great unless you will use them often.

I also have these which I used in Aviemore for NYE a few years ago. Cheaper, and great for walking. Just spray with a waterproof spray for extra protection:

Olang or sorel for me.
Olang have some with parts of the sole that clip out with teeth for walking on snow but fold back to normal sole for none snow.
Both brands excellent quality and style

CherryMaple · 30/12/2021 04:54

We are currently in the Cairngorms and there is no snow apart from high on the mountains - where yesterday it was also very icy and you’d need proper mountaineering boots to get safely up there.

I bought snow boots in Aviemore yesterday - lots of outdoor shops so easy to compare and try on. I bought some with flick-out ice grips.

Amelion · 30/12/2021 08:11

@Gonnagetgoing it might depend on what you need them for - are you just wanting them for wandering around a town/easy walks? You might not need snow boots if there’s not going to be lots of snow on the ground. If you are doing more hiking you might need proper winter hiking boots.

If you’re going through Aviemore you could probably wait and pick some up then as there’s loads of outdoor shops - then you’d have the benefit of knowing what the weather is going to be like.

LookslovelyinSpringtime · 30/12/2021 09:39

I bought some Sorek boots last year and found them very good.
