Fine, thin, greasy hair, over 40

The title says it all really, and I'm fed up with my hair. It looks flat, thin, and rubbish. I have to wash it every day, it gets greasy and looks awful otherwise. I have tried to not wash it, but it makes me feel and look really grotty. I'm looking to try new products, and I would love to wash it fewer times a week.
I have tried Plantur for thin hair, couldn't see a difference. Ditto three months of hair vitamins (tried New Nordic).
It's possibly a peri menopausal thing.
Has anybody found anything that works that doesn't cost a fortune?

Hs e you stripped out the build up? A clarifying shampoo should do this.

Nothing will reduce the greasy roots or the frequency of shampooing. I'm using head and shoulders in my 40's it's getting the hair much cleaner.

I think a silk pillowcase is helpful, stops you producing so much oil, but I’ve yet to try it myself. Do you use dry shampoo between washes?

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/12/2021 13:00

Vosene? It’s not tested on animals.

Would you consider hair extensions?

deedeemegadoodoo · 26/12/2021 13:12

I noticed my hair starting to get thinner and greasy. HRT sorted it out. I am 49 and perimenopausal.

Yes! Definitely: kerastase shampoo (35 a pop but at least 20x better than anything drugstore. Plus went from daily shampoo to twice weekly). And even better : PLAYA hair masks. I actually trashed 4/5 l’oreal masks and conditioners that were hanging in my shower. Steep expense but amazing results. Totally different after one shampoo.

imstilljenny2 · 26/12/2021 14:18

Vosene is the only shampoo that helps my greasy hair.

KateyKontent · 26/12/2021 14:28

Dry shampoo and volumising powder from freshly washed. Condition then shampoo.

LightOfAThousandStars · 26/12/2021 19:32

Bumble & Bumble Sunday shampoo works well to get rid of build up, a leave in conditioner on the ends also helps

Check your thyroid levels - may be overactive.

minipie · 26/12/2021 19:50

Highlights - they dry out the hair and also make each individual hair thicker (because it’s slightly destroyed!) so you get more volume.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 26/12/2021 19:52

Are you conditioning too much? Fine hair really doesn’t need a lot of conditioner.

AvocadoPlant · 26/12/2021 19:53

Second @Skinnymimi Kerastase shampoo and conditioner is excellent. It’s expensive but lasts for ages as you only need a very small amount.

slipperyeel · 26/12/2021 19:54

Do you live in a hard water area? Try a vinegar rinse a couple of times a week.

Seriously79 · 26/12/2021 20:06

Call me crazy, but see if you can get a blood test. I've had a particularly bad run of health and dr established my vitamin D was low.

2 months of vitamin D and I'm a new woman, with longer, better condition hair and feel better too.

Which kerastase shampoo was this please?
LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/12/2021 21:49

I get a second day using Faith in Nature rosemary shampoo.

StiltonIsLife · 26/12/2021 21:55

I have fine hair, I don't use any conditioner in the shower, just leave-in conditioner. What's helped my hair a lot is only washing it twice a week or so, it takes bit of time (and dry shampoo/ ponytail) to get to that point.

minipie · 26/12/2021 22:05

Oh yes I only use conditioner once/twice a week

SpanielsAreMyLife · 26/12/2021 22:08

I've got a head full of highlights to blend my grey and it has made the world of difference. I used to have to wash daily, now I can go 4 days.
