Curly girl method giving me the same hair as Robert Plant

I've just seen a photo of Robert and realised this is what CG makes my hair into Grin No offence to him, but I'm thinking of giving it up, it's a lot of faff for not much results.

It does seem that curly/ wavy hair is back in, after a lost decade or more of being made to feel hair was “ difficult “ if it wasn’t as straight as Kate Moss’s. Anyway, I said goodbye to shampoo about 5 years ago and my hair (which used to have all the charm of a Brillo pad), is hugely better.
It does take a while to settle down. What works for me is to use plenty of conditioner to wash ( silicone free of course) but dilute it up to 50:50 with water so it spreads around well. Wash twice if necessary. Apply conditioner afterwards while hair is still quite wet, leave on 5-20 minutes ( I use a beanie while waiting ). Then rinse, and dry hair by wrapping in a hideous oversize old cotton t shirt. I like the Faith in Nature range.

I know what you mean and struggled the same. Kept going back and trying different products but felt my hair was weighed down. It works brilliantly for some people though. @GettingStuffed can you please share which products you use??

GettingStuffed · 28/12/2021 16:31

I use a faith in nature solid shampoo in Dragon fruit, not seen it since I bought it
Argan oil conditioner, £1 in Poundland for a huge bottle
This is my hair mask www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Treatments/Hair-Masks/Garnier-Ultimate-Blends-Hair-Food-Coconut-Hair-Mask-390ml/p/775736

I find styling makes the biggest difference, more than the ingredients. Although my hair definitely benefits from sulfate and silicone free, but I’ve been doing this over 10 years now and when I looked into CG at the time it was just curly forums saying, “Yeah, just ditch silicones and sulfates” and that was it. Anything I’ve looked at recently seems to be really demanding!

Personally, I need to get as much moisture into my hair as possible after washing - so curl cream into very wet hair and then gel, then diffuse. I saw a curly hairdresser (AT LAST!) and she gave me a bunch of styling tips based on my hair. I already knew I had protein sensitive hair but didn’t really know why, she helped me understand it a bit more and what products would work for me, plus identified I have low porosity hair, hence the need to really work at getting moisture in. Makes a huge difference to how my hair looks.

I like Manes by Mel on YouTube, she doesn’t stick to CG but also accommodates for different types of product (useful for me because I do avoid sulfates and silicones, but I don’t agree that it is the only possible way to have ‘good’ hair).

Go online & try to work out what curl type you have.
Start weaning yourself off washing your hair frequently & using normal shampoo. Find a low-poo shampoo or switch to just conditioner. I use one of the Cantu Cleansing Shampoos once a week.
Look into leave-in conditioners - I use Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food Banana - after washing your hair the advice is to run a handful of conditioner through your hair, using your fingers as a comb. Then don't rinse this out.
You can add gel or mousse - tip head over & scrunch into wet conditioner filled hair. Pin it up to dry naturally if possible.
Then you need to see how it looks when dry - some hair needs protein, some moisture etc, & through trial & error you should find what works for you.
Personally I hate gel & mousse so just leave the conditioner in to dry, but that's me.

elp30 Grin

Also I should clarify that I'm not Robert in his heyday but current day Robert. (It looks fine on him, sorry Robert, if you're reading Grin)

I hadn't thought of a wide toothed comb, thanks. Am seriously considering just giving up though.

he probably has google alerts set up for his name that he checks every morning over his tea and toast. He and his barnet are fuming with you.

@APurpleSquirrel thank you.
My hair is very dry due to bleach. I will try a curl cream I think after the conditioner or maybe a foam.

So much different advice out there!!

Also I have a 2b/c from what I can tell

I like Only Curls, it’s the best products I’ve used.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 25/07/2022 12:02

Left to dry no brushing, no products. Is it worth me even doing the CGM?

Are they all CGM approved?

wildingtree · 25/07/2022 13:21

Who looks at R Plant and has their eyes go to his hair? Grin

I don't like the CG effect either. It's all a bit overkill and forced to me (like the obsessive cousin of flat-ironing). I think I prefer the soft tendrils and slightly haphazard laid backness of more relaxed care for curly/wavy hair. And yes, that does include a small amount of frizz. It won't kill anyone.

I take it the Curly Girl method is leaving you "Dazed and Confused" instead of feeling "A Whole Lot of Love"? 😜

@elp30 👏👏 👏

I agree that some of it seems OTT - so I just do the low-poo shampoo & conditioner once a week & let it air dry.
My curls definitely look a lot better! Washed mine yesterday & this is today. Still quite a bit of frizz but getting better shine & curl definition now.

@APurpleSquirrel your hair looks amazing, I take it your hair was very curly to start with?

Limesaregreen · 25/07/2022 14:07

I’m fascinated by this thread, mainly because Robert Plant was mentioned and I adore him. Never mind his hair, go listen to his voice (wanders off in a hippy haze of nostalgia)

Thank you! Yes it can be if left alone but the weight of curls does pull them out after a while.
I'm very much of the can't be arsed to do anything with my hair brigade - no products, irons, tongs etc. we only own a hairdryer to defrost the freezer!
But after reading the Curly Girl book I decided to make an effort & am getting there. As I say I don't follow it religiously, & I really wish it would sit in ringlets better, but it's better than it was.

hoorayandupsherises · 25/07/2022 17:24

I know it's a resurrected thread, but it's given me a good laugh - in sympathy I hasten to add - I have unmanageable waves often say I look like a member of Bon Jovi circa 1986 (no offence, lads).

Not helped by the fact that I do the famous MN haircut, which sometimes comes out a bit mullet.

I faithfully tried the CGM, but I wasn't much happier with the results than I am, say, today when I just washed with DH's Head and Shoulders and air-dryed.

Seemed like a lot of effort to only get halfway there ...

Boom boom 🐺
