Classic coat and boots- built to last!

I’m due a large overdue payrise and bonus in January thanks to winning a gender pay argument.

Me and my partner have an arrangement that we can each spend a percentage of the money on a treat for ourselves before adding the rest to joint savings.

I love beautiful clothes and am trying to gradually build up a selection of built to last classics in my wardrobe; stuff I am going to be excited to get out and wear still in a decade. I’m not too driven by the latest trend, more what suits me and my style and my preferences don’t change much.

I think next on my list is a really beautiful classic winter coat and boats and was thinking I’d make the most of the sales to chose something.

Where would you go for this and what would you buy?

Budget approx £500 for both, but some flex.

I am average height, size 8-10 but very large bust so must be a flattering shape and have a decent waist on it or I look swamped and a lot bigger than I am. I like burgundy, navy, black but also pinks and creams. Thinking a wool midi length. Boots I want to stick to black but something classic. Anything with a wide calf fitting option would be a hit!

So far I have favourited the Edeline and the Milly coats in the Hobbs sale and the Stephanie boots.

Max Mara coat for sure, a wrap coat looks great with a larger bust.
For boots I would look at Acne but my favourite boots at the moment are from vagabond and they were about £120

Thank you; I love the idea of the wear forever coats but they definitely look over budget- by flex a bit I meant by £100 or so! I don’t think I’d ever get a coat, let alone boots also!

I was given a Patrizia Pepe coat for my birthday a few years ago, it's a loose, boyfriend style. Beautiful wool mix and so tactile and I get strangers stroking my sleeves on the tube! Grin Shock

I wonder if you'd like these Geox boots? They're quite European in style I think...lovely in the flesh and very comfortable:

Coat-wise I would probably focus on the Jigsaw sale. I bought a lovely wool coat from Whistles a few years back and it hasn't aged well, but a friend's from Jigsaw looks great, in the same amount of time.

Thank you for the recommendations, I hadn’t heard of Patrizia Pepe and hadn’t considered Jigsaw.

When I say classic, I do really mean classic, I like structure and fitted styles; this is the Hobbs stuff I have been looking at, I’m just not sure any of it is classic enough actually!!!

Buy a virgin wool and cashmere blend coat. They feel amazing and are lifetime investments.

Look in the sales, Hobbs, Reiss Ect.

For boots I recommend Russel and Bromley ( again in the sales ) if you keep the coat dry cleaned once a year and the boots resoled they will last a long time.

user1471548941 · 23/12/2021 21:40

Thank you @Thatsplentyjack both the Karen Millen and Ralph Lauren ones are totally on the right lines- the Ralph one in particular might be great on the boobs actually!

And thanks for the care notes @Wagsandclaws part of my choice to purchase is because I seem to have achieved a reasonable level of organisation in my life to get things like dry cleaning and resoling done 😂

I love that Karen Millan one, but I could NEVER wear a cream coat and I don't suit black.
I xant seem to find boots. Try zalando. They have a wide price range. I usually find something I like on there.

Swirlywoo · 23/12/2021 21:50

I went in Hobbs recently and their coats are fabulously soft. I am also trying to build up a wardrobe of long-term classics and have one in black in my sights for some point.

SarahWoodruff · 24/12/2021 00:43

I have Hobbs' Corrine coat - it's classic, warm and soft, and would leave plenty of budget for the boots!

rapthisup · 24/12/2021 04:52

For classic boots you want these from Duo. They do 26 different calf widths.

Hobbs coats are lovely and very good quality, I bought a trench coat from there about 5 years ago and it’s still going strong.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/12/2021 06:34

Have a look at the Hobbs Tilda coat. They had some in the Next preview sale, hopefully they will still be in stock today.

Amelion · 24/12/2021 09:06

For the coat have a look at Shop The Curated - they do several different classic styles in different colours.

For boots I'd invest in a Penelope Chilvers or Fairfax and favour. You will have to extend your budget for the former though to include the coat.

The geox linked above are currently very on trend but don't fall under a classic

liveforsummer · 24/12/2021 09:15

Actually having said that they have a lot in the sale right now so not so off budget after all

I love Embassy London for boots and shoes

Damsel In A Dress do some lovely wool coats. I bought one of their military ones a few years ago and it feels like it'll last me forever.
