Eau de toilette or parfum?

My lovely SIL has asked for a particular perfume from the family for Christmas - I know crap all about it. Should I go for eau de parfum or eau de toilette? Don’t Even know what the difference is! Blush

I alway though parfum is for ladies and toilette is for gentlemen?

Perfum is a more concentrated scent than the Eau de Toilette and is usually more expensive. I'm sure the EdT will be fine.

Eau de Parfume is more concentrated and stays on the skin longer. I only wear eau de parfum

As above - parfum is a stronger version of the scent, but usually costs more. Toilette is a little watered down but will still be fine.

I only wear EdT, parfums tend to give me a headache.

Eat de toilette.

As pp have said it is do with concentration.

Eau de toilette is typically 5-10% and is one of the weakest concentrations. Cologne is weaker still at 2-5% and is often marketed at men (possibly where a pp has got the wrong end of the stick?). Eau de parfum is 15-20% so you need less and it lasts much longer on the skin.

The difference is almost always reflected in the price but if you can afford the eau de parfum then it’s almost always better value. The exception is something like Jo Malone who somehow have built a whole business model on selling eaux de colognes at the usual price of eaux de parfums.
