Chunky ankle boots

I'm really struggling with this fashion. I'm really late to the party anyway, but I keep ordering them, trying them on, then returning them! I think it's the 90's jeans I need to wear them with. It's all such a change for me. Should I bite the bullet and just buy them and get used to them, or should I stick to my skinnies? I feel like a dinosaur! I'm 44, maybe I just need to sit this one out? Anyone else struggling with this? I think it just looks a bit ugly!

I’m not loving the 90s style jeans either, skinnies go so much better with boots.
I’ll wear a ‘mom’ jean in the summer because I can wear with sandals/ sliders etc but they just don’t look good with boots imo

Why have badass biker boots, to then hide under a massive flare??! Xmas Confused

What are the boots like and how are you wearing them? I need to wear lace up boots, I.e. DMs and cropped or rolled up jeans to make this work. But I do like the look a lot

gothicsprout · 17/12/2021 08:13

I’ve tried several. I feel they look like wellies if they’re slip on style, or just feel too heavy if they’re lace up with enormous soles.

I’ve found they look better to me if they’re not black, so ended up with some nice burgundy ones from Clarks that work for me as they’re not too chunky/tall/extreme.

Chunky boots also look nice with dresses and skirts. I would only wear my boots with skinnier tucked in. I am not keen on chunky boots and wide length jeans.

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 11:00

I wear my dms with dresses / skirts and tights. I can't make the look work with jeans

Boood · 17/12/2021 11:07

Try a slim straight style- I’m wearing those rolled up so the bottom sits just above the top of my boots.

Ozanj · 17/12/2021 11:11

I find the look is so much better with calf / knee length boots provided the jeans are close to your thigh

janicewheeler · 17/12/2021 11:28

Chunky ankle boots with dresses work so well together, add a leather jacket and scarf to finish it off. They only really go with rolled up jeans or skinnies imo
Or leggings rolled up and checked shirt etc

desperatehousewife21 · 18/12/2021 06:18

T shirt or jumper dresses work too with boots.

I’ve got a pair of Harley Davidson boots waiting under the tree for me this year Xmas Wink

I love fashion so I’m not berating you for this, but you say you think they look ugly but still persist in buying them. You don’t like them, so this is a fashion that’s not for you. You don’t have to buy into every fashion that comes round.

tripletsohgod · 18/12/2021 09:13

That's a fair comment, and I'm aware of that. I just want to like them, as I feel I look so dated in my skinnies now. I feel a bit jeans-and-boots homeless! I think it's the 90s feel - it's just all too reminiscent of my teens! 40s me looks all wrong in it.
If I can't find a boots/jeans look I like, what alternative is there, that's less dated than skinnies and biker boots?

By my last sentence I mean chunky ankle boots/baggy jeans look

@Ozanj

I find the look is so much better with calf / knee length boots provided the jeans are close to your thigh
Do you mean jeans covering the boots then? Like flared or bootcut?

@Boood

Try a slim straight style- I’m wearing those rolled up so the bottom sits just above the top of my boots.
Ok thanks, that's a more subtle take on it. I'll persevere!

What boots did you previously wear with your skinnies? And what 90s jeans are you trying to wear, mom jeans or flares?

You don't need to wear anything you don't like - and surely at 44 you have your own sense of style and don't slavishly follow fashions? I wear DMs because I've always worn them - 90s indie/alternative kid - but I hate the very chunky soles that are fashionable at the moment so I don't wear them. I probably don't look like a fashionable teenager, but then I am 40 and don't really want to! Grin
