Sharpeners for eye and lip pencils

What sharpeners do you use? Do you have one for every different brand of pencil?

Are some better than others?

It's been driving me spare. I try to buy pencils that can be sharpened, so I use less plastic, but they either break, and there is a lot of wastage, to just won't sharpen, or else I end up with scratched eye lids from rogue bits of wood.

No.7 do a really good sharpener.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/12/2021 11:42

I use a good sharp metal pencil sharpener, not one designed for make up, one designed for artists.

Often plastic ones aren't sharp enough and they tear the wood a bit and leave shards.

There is a bit of a technique to getting a pencil really sharp. If I ask DH to sharpen my eyeliner I normally regret it as it is so bloody sharp because he's used to getting a fine point on his drawing pencils. I like my makeup pencils a bit less pointy!

I have an ester lauder one which is great - for two different thickness of pencils. But it wasn’t big enough for a really fat crayon that I bought later on, so I have a nars one for that.

They’re both brilliant quality.

I have a Boots No 7 one. I liked it so much I bought another one.

RainCloude · 16/12/2021 12:01

Don't get the Charlotte Tilbury one it's rubbish

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/12/2021 12:24

I have a metal one from Rymans. I think I'll try leaving to pencils in the fridge to see if that helps.

I did have a Charlotte Tilbury one, but the pencil that went with it was utter rubbish, so I don't use it anymore.

That's the other thing, every brand makes their pencils a different thickness, so they never fit in each other's sharpeners. Bobbi Brown chubby lip pencils are a pain in regard to that.

I'm fed up with this, but I keep buying pencils to avoid plastic

Tweezerman one, I've had it years and it's fantastic.

IamGusFring · 16/12/2021 12:50

Buy Dior - they come with them .

Lottapianos · 16/12/2021 12:51

I've got the MAC one, it's good

I have, Grin but they only work for their eye pencils.

Nars velvet lip pencils are another struggle.

Staedtler one for two sizes of pencil and comes with a tub to catch shavings.

HoldUppppp · 16/12/2021 12:54

Yes the nars ones are a pain! Tweezerman is 1000% your friend here

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/12/2021 12:54

Also, any tricks? I will see if keeping the pencils in the fridge helps, because am fed up the breaking off and wasting.

My MAC one is still going sharp and strong 7 years in.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/12/2021 12:55

Thanks, I think Nars have some sort of composite substance that's very difficult to sharpen.

I'll look for the Tweezerman ones.

I second the estee lauder one.

apinions · 16/12/2021 16:00

I like to have a sharp point to my pencil but find that every sharpener that I have used has a little bit of plastic inside the sharpener which makes the top of the pencil flat. Are there any eye pencil sharpeners without this?

Gonnagetgoing · 16/12/2021 16:45

Have always used MAC ones with 2 diff sized holes for diff sized pencils.

Bought one and MAC MA/SA gave me one free too.

WreathSupreme · 16/12/2021 16:49

My Barry M one has held together for years. It’s got 2 different sized sharpeners in it. I use it for my eyeliners.
I use my Chantecaille one for my lip liners because I don’t use lip liner that much.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/12/2021 16:57

You don't need a sharpener that is an exact fit, use one slightly too big, it is fine, just hold the pencil in the right position.

succession · 16/12/2021 16:58

The best one I've ever used is the one from Urban decay. It's brilliant. Works with the really soft long lasting gel liners too.

natrew · 16/12/2021 20:54

I've got a Barry M one, it's great. Not very expensive and has worked perfectly with all of my eye pencils and lipliners.

Ere Perez

@JerkintheMerkin

No.7 do a really good sharpener.
It's the best ime too.
EnjoyingTheSilence · 17/12/2021 08:59

Best one I’ve had is the £2 Victoria Beckham one. No god if you’re not able to go to the shop as deliver costs are ridiculously high, but loving the eyeliners
