What shampoo is best for an itchy scalp?

I have been suffering from an itchy scalp for a few weeks. I can feel raised areas like spots. Is there any shampoos (and conditioners) that might help? I have fine hair which isn't coloured. The products I use at the moment are Nioxin ones which I buy at the hairdresser. Thanks.

Nizoral for sure.

@1000umbrellas

Hedrin. You have nits.
I absolutely do not have nits.

I've never managed to stop it and have started doing 1x Co-wash a week and (on a different day)1x diluted bicarb rinse followed by a vinegar rinse. I've assumed that the shampoos have an ingredient in them that affects me. This is the first time in a long time that my scalp is not burning/itchy with scaly bits that I can feel (not see).

I've read though that the MooGoo brand was designed for this issue - haven't tried it though.

I always used to recommend Phillip Kingsley itchy/flaky scalp shampoo but it doesn't work on me any more (either the formula has changed or I changed somehow!).

Which is a shame as I used it for years, even when it was difficult to get hold of after moving countries (and I still have some unopened bottles!).

I use function of beauty with no colour and no scent and it cured my itchy scalp.

I have psoriasis on my scalp and use mediceuticals shampoo and hair rinse when it’s really itchy. It calms it down massively during a flare up. Got it from my hairdressers and was expensive but one bottle of each has lasted 2 years as don’t use much each time and only use every few weeks. Works best massaging each in then leaving for 3minutes before rinsing off (hairdresser advised that). Before that I’d used all kinds, coal tar, t-gel, pretty much everything in Boots, but not found same level of relief.
When not in an itchy phases I use a very basic coconut oil shampoo or shampoo bar as an everyday shampoo and it works well without causing irritation.

Forgot to add my actual recommendation instead of complaining about my old recommendation! Currently using Nizoral - cheap and cheerful, does the job. It's not great on coloured hair though.

Me and DD both have itchy, sensitive scalps. We use T-Gel shampoo to clear it up when severe, and have been using Head and Shoulders for maintenance, but have recently discovered the Garnier Oat Milk range, which smells much nicer.

Neutrogena T gel

TomatoSoup69 · 14/12/2021 17:16

Vichy Dercos or The Body Shop ginger one

It stopped working for me too. So now I used Redken Scalp Relief Soothing Balance and it's great. Highly recommended!

Nizoral is really good. I use it about once a week and in between I use the Klorane peony range (specifically for sensitive and irritated scalps) or Faith in Nature which is really gentle.

chatw0o0 · 15/12/2021 00:15

Thanks for that @HundredMilesAnHour - I will add that to my list of shampoos to test out. Always good to get a recommendation and avoid a stockpile of unwanted shampoo from building up.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/12/2021 07:14

Nizoral or T gel. You can get spots on your scalp, if you have you’ll need a course of antibiotics.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/12/2021 07:20

Thank you all for your suggestions. I haven't been to get anything yet. I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow and thought I might speak to my hairdresser first. I can then go to Boots and get something if she hasn't got anything in the salon I can use.

T Gel for emergency use, Body Shop ginger is the only one I can tolerate for every day. I buy it in bulk when they have an offer on :)

Silverstreaks · 15/12/2021 07:30

You could have developed sensitivity to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and or sicones in shampoo and conditioner. You could also be sensitive to 'itchy Ms'
All of the above irritate my scalp.
Faith in Nature shampoo is mostly ok for me.
The £1 XHC range from Savers doesn't irritate.
There are lots of products free from for the above and can be found with a quick search.

Taytotots · 15/12/2021 08:22

As @Silverstreaks says, it could be itchy ms. I have issues with them.

You could try only using transparent shampoos (I.e. ones you can literally see through; colour is fine). I can’t use anything opaque (creamy looking), I must be sensitive to a chemical in opaque shampoos, even ones designed for sensitive skin. I get on well with Aussie Mega.

I have checked my shampoo and it does have one of those ingredients so that could be the cause. I have found my skin over all a bit dry and itchy recently and moved over to a Sanex body wash which is helping. I might need to look for shampoo without the Ms.

My current shampoo is transparent.

I often put two or three drops of tee tree oil in a plain/unscented shampoo. That seems to help.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/12/2021 09:29

I’ve tried everything including Philip Kingsley, Body Shop, Moo Goo etc etc.

The only thing that works for me is Nizarol. Nothing else touches it.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/12/2021 09:38

People who use Nizarol do you also use a conditioner and mousse?

OP posts:
TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/12/2021 09:43

Since your hair is not coloured, Selsun Blue would work best. For my coloured hair I use Redken scalp relief shampoo, which works well but needs two latherings.
